Here's where to stream NASA's InSight landing on Mars today

NASA returns to the Red Planet
051117_Mondon_Headshot.jpgBY MARIELLE MONDON

For the first time in six years, a NASA spacecraft is headed for Mars, scheduled to touch down on the planet's surface Monday afternoon.

NASA launched its InSight Mission lander, aiming for one of the duller parts of Mars' dusty surface, a vast lava plain called Elysium Planitia. NASA refers to the area as "the biggest parking lot on Mars."

If all goes according to plan, InSight will record "Marsquakes" and measure the planet's upper layer heat flow.

Only 40 percent of all Mars-related missions have been successful, and NASA is the only program to have successfully landed on Mars. The most recent event was in 2012 when the Curiosity Rover headed for the red planet to figure out whether the planet had ever been suitable for life.

Two years ago the European Space Agency unsuccessfully tried to put a lander on Mars, but a glitch sent the probe to the ground.

Now NASA's InSight lander is scheduled to touch down Monday, Nov. 26, around 3 p.m.

To give everyone a chance to see the latest discoveries of Mars, NASA is offering live coverage of the event online. Coverage will begin around 2 p.m. Check out the video below to watch.

Lara Trump Defends Hyde-Smith: Dems 'Always Scream Racism' Against GOP

By Nicole Lafond
November 26, 2018 12:35 pm
Trump daughter-in-law and senior adviser to President Trump’s 2020 campaign Lara Trump on Monday defended Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, the Republican incumbent in the Mississippi Senate race, whose recent comments about “public hanging” have caused her to lose donors and prompted outcry heading into the runoff election on Tuesday.

“This is nothing new,” Lara Trump told Fox Business on Monday. “The Democrats always scream racism at a Republican contender in any field across the country. … Listen, Cindy Hyde-Smith apologized for these remarks and I think if you actually watch the way it happened I think a lot was taken out of context and really blown up out of proportion.”

Trump’s defense of Hyde-Smith comes just as her father-in-law prepares to travel to Mississippi and headline two separate rallies for the embattled Republican incumbent, who has lost funding and faced criticism for “public hanging” that’s been widely considered racist.

While lavishing praise on one of her supporters, Hyde Smith told a crowd gathered that she liked this particular supporter so much that “if he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row.” The comment was met with swift backlash — especially given Mississippi’s history of violent public hangings of black people — and Hyde-Smith has since apologized.

Corsi Casts Himself As Right-Wing Martyr Pursued By Mueller Probe 'Thugs'

By Josh Kovensky
November 26, 2018 11:55 am

As over the top as ever, conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi has told multiple news outlets that he had refused a plea bargain from special counsel and alleged deep state factotum Robert Mueller.

“They want me to say I willfully lied,” he reportedly told NBC. “I’m not going to agree that I lied. I did not. I will not lie to save my life. I’d rather sit in prison and rot for as long as these thugs want me to.”

Corsi – a famously unreliable conspiracy theorist who pushed the birther conspiracy theory under Obama and assisted in the “swift-boating” of John Kerry in 2004 – said two weeks ago that Mueller would indict him for perjury in two days.

Corsi has not yet been indicted. Special counsel spokesman Peter Carr declined to comment.

The former Infowars DC bureau chief’s remarks said that the purported perjury charge is related to whether he saw Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in the summer of 2016.

Trump's 'Body Man' Will Depart The White House

By CATHERINE LUCEY and Zeke Miller
November 26, 2018 11:20 am
WASHINGTON (AP) — One of President Donald Trump’s closest aides will be departing the White House in the coming weeks.

Jordan Karem, the personal aide who has served as Trump’s “body man” and director of Oval Office operations since March, will be leaving the White House. He assumed the combined roles held by longtime Trump aides John McEntee and Keith Schiller.

Karem was one of the earliest staffers on Trump’s presidential campaign and one of the few remaining longtime loyalists in the West Wing.

His departure comes amid a wave of exits expected after the November midterm elections. Trump’s White House continues to set records for presidential staff turnover.

In a statement Trump praised Karem’s “loyalty and his commitment,” adding, “I know he will do many great things in the future.”

What To Know About New York Judge's Ruling Against The Trump Foundation

By Allegra Kirkland
November 26, 2018 11:53 am

A decision handed down by a New York judge over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend bolstered most of the key arguments in the state attorney general’s lawsuit against the Donald J. Trump Foundation.

Judge Saliann Scarpulla rejected the Trump Foundation’s motion to dismiss the suit in a Friday ruling. She affirmed that a sitting U.S. president can be sued for activities unrelated to his conduct in office. And she wrote that New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood’s allegations that President Trump used his personal charity to settle personal financial affairs and further his political career were “very serious.”

Scarpulla’s ruling was a green light allowing the case to proceed, exposing Trump to millions of dollars in potential penalties. Trump’s legal team must file a response within 45 days of her decision.

Here’s what you need to know about Scarpulla’s assessment of the case.

Research predicted this wave of right-wing domestic terrorism. Republicans tanked the report.

Then-Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) blasted Janet Napolitano for insulting "American citizens who disagree with the direction Washington Democrats are taking our nation."

Last year, a white-nationalist army veteran was charged with second-degree murder after he drove a car into a group of nonviolent protesters in Charlottesville, Va., killing one and injuring 19. Earlier this month, a far-right-wing army veteran shot and killed two people at a Tallahassee, Fla. yoga studio.

According to a new report posted Sunday by the Washington Post, the yoga studio victims were among at least 20 people who have been killed this year in the United States in suspected right-wing attacks (compared to “just one fatal attack in 2018 that may have been motivated by left-wing ideologies.”) This comes amid an “uptick in right-wing terrorism,” as the report puts it. The FBI has documented this phenomenon as an increase in hate crimes.

Some of the blame for the rise in right-wing terrorism has been assigned to President Donald Trump’s racist rhetoric and his “both sides” excuses for white nationalism. Some of it may go to his administration’s decision not to fund Countering Violent Extremism programs. But some of it precedes Trump and goes back nearly a decade.

In April 2009, the Obama administration’s Department of Homeland Security released a report warning that this would happen. “Rightwing Extremism:
Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment” warned that “rightwing extremists may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about several emergent issues.” It also predicted that the possibility of new gun restrictions and the return of “military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities” might mean “emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks.” The report called this convergence of factors the “most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States.”

The NRA just got fantastic news from a former Supreme Court justice

America's gun epidemic is going to get worse.

IAN MILLHISER
NOV 26, 2018, 10:42 AM

The Supreme Court’s 2008 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller was, at once, a doctrinal earthquake and a somewhat contained storm. Heller held, for the first time in American history, that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to bear arms. Yet Justice Antonin Scalia’s opinion for the Court contained so many caveats and exceptions that many gun regulations remain intact a decade later.

However, in an interview with the New York Times’ Adam Liptak, retired Justice John Paul Stevens suggests that many of those caveats are likely to be wiped away soon. According to Liptak, Stevens “helped persuade Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, who was in the majority, to ask for ‘some important changes’ to Justice Scalia’s opinion.”

The result was a passage providing that Heller should not “be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms.”

The upshot of Stevens’ highly unusual revelation — justices, even retired justices, rarely disclose internal Court deliberations — is that there are probably no longer five votes on the Supreme Court who support this language in Heller. A wide range of firearm restrictions intended to keep firearms out of the hands of especially dangerous individuals or to keep them out of “sensitive places such as schools” could soon fall.
