Judge Denies North Dakota Tribe's Request To Block Voter ID Law

By JAMES MacPHERSON
November 2, 2018 12:08 pm

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday denied a request from an American Indian tribe in North Dakota to block the state’s voter ID law just days before the election.

North Dakota’s law requires voters to show ID with a residential street address, which American Indians have argued is not always evident on reservations.

The Spirit Lake Sioux tribe sued the state Tuesday seeking a temporary restraining order, saying the street address requirement is unconstitutional.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland wrote that the allegations gave him “great cause for concern” but that he was denying the motion because it would cause confusion so close to the election.

“The federal courts are unanimous in their judgment that it is highly important to preserve the status quo when elections are fast approaching,” Hovland wrote.

Meet Katie Hill, the millennial who could flip a solidly red California district

Katie Hill is not a leftist, but she could turn the 25th Congressional District blue.

CASEY QUINLAN
OCT 31, 2018, 8:00 AM

Katie Hill has been running for Congress for 19 months, and you can tell. Her answers to questions about policy are polished and substantive. She has studies to back up her claims. Her body language tells you she’s at ease, but her resolute gaze belongs to someone practiced at anticipating challenges and personal jabs.

Hill is a 31 year-old executive of a nonprofit, PATH, People Assisting The Homeless, who grew up in Santa Clarita and Antelope Valley. She would be the first openly bi congresswoman from California if she won the 25th Congressional District race. There are almost 14,000 more Democrats than Republicans in the district, according to CQ Roll Call, but nearly a quarter of voters aren’t registered with a political party. The district has been represented by a Republican since 1993, though it’s becoming increasingly diverse, with Latinx people now making up nearly 40 percent of the district.

Hill and her opponent, Rep. Steve Knight (R), are neck and neck in the polls.

Knight is, in many ways, a formidable opponent. He isn’t gaffe-prone. He says he’s pro-life but stops short of saying he wants Roe v. Wade overturned. He calls for strict immigration policies and has supported almost all of Trump’s policies, but he also joined the House Climate Solutions Caucus and tends not to participate in racist dog-whistling and attacks against the press. He maintains the image of a moderate Republican by stepping over an increasingly low bar.

But that won’t necessarily stop his constituents from realizing where he stands on policy issues. Democratic voters are energized over issues such as education, access to health care, Republicans’ tax bill, and affordable housing — none of which Knight has a great record on.

Just weeks before the election, Knight introduced a bill claiming to protect health care coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, but he had already voted twice against such protections. He voted for the GOP tax bill that benefited the wealthy and grew the deficit, and seems unwilling to seriously address income inequality.

Claudia Tenney thinks studying gun violence is a waste of money

But Claudia can I call you Claudia , did you get Russian money from the NRA...................

GOP congresswoman: No need for more gun violence research, the NRA has us covered

Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) said Thursday that it would be a waste of federal tax dollars to look into how to stop tens of thousand of annual gun deaths.

Nearly 40,000 people die annually from gun deaths in the United States. Thanks to the gun lobby, the federal government has largely been prohibited from doing research to figure out how to reduce those numbers. But Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) said Thursday that she thinks any more research would be a waste of money. Her reasoning: the National Rifle Association already has done all the research we need.

Tenney, who is facing a close re-election race in New York’s 22nd Congressional District, debated her Democratic opponent, Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi (D), on Thursday night. After bragging about being “very proud” of her “A” rating from the NRA, she was asked by the moderator whether she would support funding to study gun violence in this country. Without hesitating, Tenney made clear she would not.

In 1996, the National Rifle Association and one of its champions, then-Rep. Jay Dickey (R-AR) pushed through Congress a legislative provision that effectively blocked Centers for Disease Control doing any research on the causes of gun violence in America. In 2015, after a mass shooting in Oregon, even Dickey himself suggested that his amendment should be scrapped and that federal research was needed to find ways to stop the problem. Following the horrific mass killings in Parkland, Fla., Congress passed a bill in March that lifted the prohibition but did not appropriate the funds for such research.

Tenney said Thursday that it would be a waste to spend money on this research, because we already know all we need to know. “We’ve spent a fortune studying gun violence,” she claimed. “One of the things the NRA does, it was actually founded in New York City. The prime purpose, the reason that [the] NRA was founded was to provide education and safety for people handling firearms. So we want to spend more tax dollars to study something that we already know a lot about? I don’t think that’s a good use of taxpayer money. ”

This hypocrite, that would say what she said in the beginning quotes headlines, shows that for one...................if her kids got killed by a gun she would have no empathy, because the only thing she thinks about is getting tax dollars from the taxpayers at $174,000 a year and also getting paid off by an industry that basically promotes death at our expense.................

Two, for every gun injury in this country our heath care system is taxed to the max for the harm that it has caused, the bankruptcy it can inflict on the victim if they survive and the family of the victim in hospital and after care costs.................

How dare she say that the NRA has her covered..................no lady they have us covered in blood and they got money from the fucking Russians............................who fucking side are you on ......................that is the question......who's side are you on.................apparently not the American side................except your side of greed and Russians..................

Trump claims a majority of undocumented immigrants skip their court dates. Here are the facts.

Over 90 percent follow the rules.

REBEKAH ENTRALGO NOV 2, 2018, 10:49 AM

President Donald Trump made an outrageous claim during a Thursday afternoon briefing on immigration. His assertion: Only 3 percent of undocumented immigrants released while their asylum cases are pending ever show up for their court hearing.

“We’re not letting them into our country, and they never show up. Almost like a level of 3 percent,” the president said Thursday. “They never show up for the trial, so by the time their trial comes, they are gone.”

Wrong. The government’s own data even proves that statement is incorrect. According to a Justice Department report from the Executive Office For Immigration Review, in 2017 that number was actually 89 percent, and has consistently remained high. In 2016 it was 91 percent and from 2014 to 2015, it was higher than 93 percent.

This data is also backed up by the American Immigration Council, which concluded that from 2001 to 2016, 90 percent of asylum-seeking families show up at the courthouse. Even the Republican-friendly Center For Immigration Studies concedes that these families consistently follow the rules and meet their court dates.

And the immigrants don't give false testimony in depositions, like you have asshole, and they don't defraud a state in taxes to the tune of 400 million dollars.....................like your family has............so your one to talk...............
