'We lost New Mexico to Mexico': Internet breaks into hysterics over Trump wanting to build border

wall on Colorado

Published 33 mins ago

By Sarah K. Burris

The president of the United States indicated he accidentally forgot where the state of Colorado was during his speech to an energy conference of fracking companies Wednesday.

Trump told the audience he was building a “wall” in Colorado, which is the state just north of New Mexico. If Trump was referring to his U.S.-Mexico border wall, it’s the southern New Mexico border on which he intends to build the wall.

It prompted many to wonder if the president whipped out his fact-changing Sharpie yet again.

John Cornyn's bill to address gun violence doesn't actually address gun violence

By Josh Israel -
October 23, 2019

The NRA has spent more than $65,000 to support the Texas Republican.

More than two months after a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, left 22 people dead and 24 more injured, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) announced his response on Wednesday: a package of reforms he's calling the Restoring, Enhancing, Strengthening, and Promoting Our Nation's Safety Efforts Act, or the RESTORE Act. But gun violence advocates say Cornyn's proposals would not address several major issues.

Cornyn claimed his "plan to reduce mass violence" would create "task forces" to investigate illegal firearm sellers and buyers, expand some outpatient treatment programs for the mentally ill, increase communication between law enforcement and mental health providers, promote "best practices" to keep schools safe, and make it easier for online services to share information with law enforcement.

"I spent time with families and victims in El Paso and Midland-Odessa following the shootings and promised each one of them I would work with my colleagues in the Senate on real solutions," Cornyn explained in an op-ed announcing the proposal. "No person, family, or community should endure the heartbreak caused by the recent mass shootings in Texas. It's time to answer their call for action, and pass the RESPONSE Act to keep our communities safe from mass violence."

But advocates say Cornyn's plans omit popular proposals that could make a significant dent in the problem of gun violence, including red-flag laws to disarm those who are deemed a threat to themselves or others, and universal background checks.

GOP unveils new plan to rip health care away from 12 million Americans

By Dan Desai Martin -
October 23, 2019

A new Republican plan will end the Medicaid expansion, which extended health insurance to 12 million people.

Republicans unveiled their latest effort to get rid of the Affordable Care Act on Tuesday with a new health care plan that would dramatically impact millions of Americans.

The Republican Study Committee, a group of conservative Republicans, released a plan that would roll back many of the protections in the ACA, give block grants to states rather than subsidies for individuals buying health insurance, and eliminate the Medicaid expansion enshrined in the ACA, according to the Hill.

The Medicaid expansion helped more than 12 million people obtain health insurance, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Since there is no legislative language, it is unclear how many — if any — of these 12 million Americans would be covered under the plan.

"I think that health care is going to create our majority," Rep. Roger Marshall (R-KS), chair of the committee, said when rolling out the new plan. "I think that we're going to get the majority back in the House, we're going to keep the Senate majority, we're going to win the presidency because of health care."

Cyclist who flipped off Trump running for local office

Published 4 hours ago
on October 23, 2019

By Agence France-Presse

A viral photo taken in the fall of 2017 shows a cyclist flipping off Donald Trump’s presidential convoy. The image cost Juli Briskman, the cyclist, her job.

Two years later, Briskman has jumped headfirst into politics and is running for local office.

Night has begun to fall in Loudoun County, Virginia, and the growing shadows on Kartar Khalsa’s front porch make it difficult for him to recognize the friendly blonde woman going door to door, handing out leaflets ahead of the November 5 local elections.

“Oh, she’s the one who flipped the president?” asked the turbaned yoga teacher, once the Democratic candidate had moved on to his neighbor’s house.

Apple deleted a Hong Kong protest app. What does it mean for democracy around the world?

The company’s decision to bow to the Chinese government will have extensive implications around the world.

By Delia Paunescu Oct 23, 2019, 11:00am EDT

As American companies try to figure out how to keep business afloat without angering the Chinese government amid the ongoing Hong Kong protests, Reset focused its latest episode on HK Map Live — an app that’s being used by pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong. It was designed to help protesters and residents to locate police and demonstrations.

Apple rejected it when it was initially submitted to the App Store, then later changed its mind and approved it. A few days after it became available, Apple turned around and banned it entirely. The decision worried US lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, who wrote CEO Tim Cook a letter expressing their concern.

Today, people in Hong Kong are still using HK Map Live, according to Quartz reporter Mary Hui, who’s been reporting on the months-long protests there. She explains that instead of accessing it through an iPhone app, they’re finding it through a browser or downloading an Android phone app instead.

For reference, Apple also deleted the Quartz app from the App Store. And earlier this month, Google got in trouble with its own employees when it banned a protest video game app.

3 absurd stories show how badly NASA understood female astronauts

Sally Ride did not need 100 tampons for a week-long mission.

By Passant Rabie on October 18, 2019

Filed Under Gender, History, International Space Station & Space Travel

It’s been a bumpy aerospace ride, but we finally made it. The first all-women spacewalk took place in the early hours of Friday morning.

Astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir made history by stepping outside of the International Space Station hatch for some zero-gravity maintenance work following a long and unfortunate series of setbacks.

Ever since it launched in November 2000, the ISS has had over 200 spacewalks, but never with an all-female team floating outside the spacecraft. Therefore, this achievement may seem long overdue. But even 250 miles above Earth, women can’t escape misconceptions based on their gender.

Throughout history, female astronauts have suffered from some pretty ridiculous, eye-roll inducing incidents in their male-dominated field. In order to commemorate where they are today, we look back at three of the most infamous misconceptions about women in space.

Move over, Honeycrisp: New apple to debut at grocery stores

By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS today

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — They call it the Cosmic Crisp. It’s not a video game, a superhero or the title of a Grateful Dead song.

It’s a new variety of apple, coming to a grocery store near you Dec. 1

Cosmic Crisp is the first apple ever bred in Washington state, which grows the majority of the United States’ apples. It’s expected to be a game changer.

Already, growers have planted 12 million Cosmic Crisp apple trees, a sign of confidence in the new variety. While only 450,000 40-pound (18-kilogram) boxes will be available for sale this year, that will jump to more than 2 million boxes in 2020 and more than 21 million by 2026.

The apple variety was developed by Washington State University. Washington growers, who paid for the research, will have the exclusive right to sell it for the first 10 years.
