World's oldest intact shipwreck discovered in Black Sea

Archaeologists say the 23-metre vessel has lain undisturbed for more than 2,400 years

Archaeologists have found what they believe to be the world’s oldest intact shipwreck at the bottom of the Black Sea where it appears to have lain undisturbed for more than 2,400 years.

The 23-metre (75ft) vessel, thought to be ancient Greek, was discovered with its mast, rudders and rowing benches all present and correct just over a mile below the surface. A lack of oxygen at that depth preserved it, the researchers said.

“A ship surviving intact from the classical world, lying in over 2km of water, is something I would never have believed possible,” said Professor Jon Adams, the principal investigator with the Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project (MAP), the team that made the find. “This will change our understanding of shipbuilding and seafaring in the ancient world.”

The ship is believed to have been a trading vessel of a type that researchers say has only previously been seen “on the side of ancient Greek pottery such as the ‘Siren Vase’ in the British Museum”.

Trump was caught in one of the thousands of lies he has told — this time, his racist lies about refugees traveling through Mexico — but this time, he actually admitted he had no proof for his nonsense.

During an impromptu gaggle in the Oval Office Tuesday afternoon, Trump was pressed on his baseless claim that the group of migrants contains “unknown Middle Easterners” intent on crossing the border into the United States.

Trump then claimed that immigration officials tell him, “It happens all the time, from the Middle East.”

“But there’s no proof,” CNN reporter Jim Acosta noted.

“Well, there could very well be,” Trump said.

“But there’s no proof,” Acosta repeated.

“There’s no proof of anything, there’s no proof of anything,” Trump replied. “But there could very well be.”

Pence: Honduran refugees aren't Mexican, so they must be Middle Eastern

Pence spun a deranged theory that a group of refugees are secret terrorists who are from 'other than Mexico — that means from the Middle East region.'

Mike Pence is amplifying Trump’s racist attack on a group of Honduran refugees, who are traveling north in a large group to keep each other safe on their long journey to seek asylum in the United States.

Trump is telling blatant, racist lies about these desperate people. He made the baseless claim that “criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in” with the migrant group, and called the “caravan” a national security threat.

Even Fox News has admitted that there is “no evidence” to support Trump’s claim, which some conservative commentators and anchors on the network have repeated.

And while it doesn’t seem possible, Pence actually made Trump’s crazy, racist conspiracy theory even crazier and more racist — by insisting that “statistics” prove there must be some Middle Eastern terrorists hiding amid the Honduran refugees, and that it’s “inconceivable” for Trump to be wrong about this.

Shockingly, Pence also claimed that the Trump administration routinely describes Middle Easterners as being from somewhere “other than Mexico.”

Trump team wants health plans that reject you for pre-existing conditions

The Trump administration is inviting states to attack health care protections for pre-existing conditions just two weeks before midterms.

Republicans are forging ahead with their crusade to sabotage key consumer protections covered by Obamacare, and they’re doing it just two weeks before the midterm elections.

“The Trump administration announced a new policy on Monday making it easier for states to circumvent coverage requirements and consumer protections in the Affordable Care Act,” the New York Times reports.

In other words, the administration is adjusting rules to allow health care plans that don’t have to cover pre-existing conditions and don’t offer other essential coverage, such as prenatal care.

Under the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies are not allowed to deny coverage to consumers because of a person’s medical history, nor are they allowed to charge people with a pre-existing condition more.

It’s one of the most popular features of Obamacare, with 3 in 4 Americans supporting them, according to a poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation.

GOP lawmaker busted for lying about his massive education cuts

Wisconsin students are still paying the price for what Dale Kooyenga and his fellow Republicans did to them.

Wisconsin state Rep. Dale Kooyenga is already under fire for denying clear video evidence that he was drunk on the job — and now he’s misleading voters about the harmful spending cuts that he and other Republicans have made to education.

During a recent debate with Democrat Julie Henszey, his opponent for an open state Senate seat, Kooyenga claimed that “there has not been a cut to education” since he has been on the Joint Finance Committee, which writes the state budget.

That’s false.

According to the Legislature’s nonpartisan budget agency, Republicans actually slashed funding for the University of Wisconsin twice while Kooyenga served on the finance committee: a $66 million cut in the 2013-15 budget, and a $250 million cut in the 2015-17 budget.

The Wisconsin State Senate Democratic Committee (SSDC) almost immediately slammed Kooyenga for his deception in a press release.

Trump-linked group dumps $1 million bailout on flailing Ohio Republican

Embattled Rep. Troy Balderson is getting a million-dollar bailout.

Unable to generate the support he needs on his own, Rep. Troy Balderson (R-OH) must once again turn to outside dark money groups to prop up his struggling campaign.

Politico reports that a Trump-linked super PAC is about to pour in $1 million to bolster the flagging Balderson campaign against surging Democratic nominee Danny O’Connor.

The Trump-linked group, America First Action, “feels that the race has become increasingly competitive and Balderson is being outspent significantly,” according to Politico. They plan on spending the $1 million on television ads, digital advertising, and direct mail.

In an August special election, Balderson relied on millions of dollars of outside support to squeak out a narrow win over O’Connor, even though the district is drawn to heavily favor Republicans.

Since then, however, O’Connor has massively outraised Balderson to prepare for their general-election rematch.

A dozen family members come out against GOP nominee for governor

Nevada Republican Adam Laxalt gets brutally denounced — by his own family.

Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt’s push to become the state’s next Republican governor suffered an awkward, personal hit this week when 12 members of his family implored voters not to support him.

“We are writing as members of the Laxalt family who have spent our lives in Nevada, and feel compelled to protect our family name from being leveraged and exploited by Adam Laxalt, the Republican candidate for governor,” the relatives wrote.

“Over the years, we’ve always supported our family, even when we haven’t always agreed with them or their politics,” they stressed. “But as this Election Day nears, we feel compelled to speak publicly about why we believe that Adam Laxalt is the wrong choice for Nevada’s governorship.”

One of their biggest beefs with the Republican nominee is his hollow claim that he was born and raised in Nevada.

“For those of us who were actually raised in Nevada, it’s difficult to hear him continue to falsely claim that he was raised in Nevada or has any true connections to Nevadans,” the Laxalt family wrote.

Constituent slams Devin Nunes for charging $2,700 to meet with him

Devin Nunes has been dodging constituents for years, and they're noticing.

Rep. Devin Nunes’ (R-CA) constituents are starting to notice just how far he’ll go to avoid interacting with the people in his district.

“I recall when Devin Nunes early in his career came to a realtors Thursday morning meeting to address concerns of the real estate community and no one had to pay,” a constituent named Rod Palmer wrote in a letter to Nunes’ hometown paper, The Fresno Bee.

“Now if you want to have concerns addressed, you must pay up to $2,700, be vetted and meet at a secret meeting place,” Palmer continued. “This is not the type of representation one should expect from an elected official.”

Nunes has not held an open town hall event since 2010. And as Palmer notes, any constituent who wants to see Nunes has to go to some pretty extraordinary lengths.

Tickets for several recent Nunes fundraisers topped out at $2,700, and attendees weren’t told where the events were located until after they were vetted.
