GOP abandons all hope that failed tax scam will help them win votes

By Dan Desai Martin - October 15, 2018

Republicans would rather hide their record of helping the wealthy and leaving the middle class behind.

Turns out Republicans know their tax scam — running up trillion-dollar deficits to supply handouts to billionaires and Wall Street banks — won’t do them any favors during the midterm elections.

A tax scam heavily tilted toward the rich is barely mentioned in ads from the Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF), a Republican-aligned dark money group that spends millions of dollars trying to shore up a failing Republican majority.

Out of more than 31,000 ads the group has aired, a mere 17 percent refer to the tax scam, reports Bloomberg.

“The data underscore concerns among Republicans that the 2017 tax law — championed by President Donald Trump and GOP congressional leaders — hasn’t gained traction with voters ahead of the Nov. 6 election that will determine control of the House and Senate.”

GOP megadonors desperately try to save racist nominee for governor of Florida

By Bernie Dennler III - October 15, 2018

Rep. Ron DeSantis’ racist comments are not keeping wealthy conservative donors away from his Florida campaign for governor.

Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis has made headlines for all the wrong reasons lately in his campaign for governor of Florida.

First, he kicked off the general election by suggesting voters would “monkey this up” if they elect his African-American opponent, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum.

Then, DeSantis was revealed to be a moderator of an aggressively bigoted Facebook group — and the author of a book excusing slavery.

Despite this, super-rich Republican donors are embracing DeSantis. His struggling campaign against Gillum got a major financial boost this month, thanks to millions of dollars in contributions from wealthy individuals.

Outside groups caught lying to prop up vulnerable GOP congressman

By Dan Desai Martin - October 15, 2018

Rep. Troy Balderson's campaign is struggling — so an outside group is pouring money into false ads attacking Democrat Danny O'Connor.

Outside interest groups are resorting to false and misleading ads against Democratic candidate Danny O’Connor in order to support Rep. Troy Balderson’s struggling campaign.

Balderson, an Ohio Republican, squeaked out a slim victory over O’Connor during an August special election in a district that supported Trump by double digits. But to keep his seat, Balderson still has to survive a rematch with O’Connor when voters go to the polls on Nov. 6.

In a “misleading slam” of an ad, as the Columbus Dispatch put it, the Republican group Defending Main Street is attempting to turn voters against O’Connor using misinformation and anti-immigrant xenophobia.

The ad falsely claims O’Connor supports making Columbus a “sanctuary city for illegal immigrants.” O’Connor has not, in fact, come out in support of this.

GOP nominee complains that ethics rules are 'road to full socialism'

By Oliver Willis - October 15, 2018

Florida GOP nominee Manny Diaz Jr. opted for an extreme scare tactic to fight against any new ethics rules that might affect him.

A Florida state representative heavily involved with charter schools, who has for years benefited financially from legislation he helped pass, said new ethics rules would send his state on a “road to full socialism.”

Republican Manny Diaz Jr. is running for the seat in Florida District 36.

While serving in the Florida House, Diaz also serves as Chief Operating Officer for Doral College, which makes money from charter schools. At the same time, Diaz has used his role in the legislature to push an education agenda tilted toward the charter school industry.

In other words, when Diaz votes for charter school demands, he helps to enrich himself.

So Manny, can I call you Manny................did you read the book Nancy MacLean , Democracy in Chains...................it spells out how your libertarian concept of what James Buchanan did in the late 50's and 60's when it came to Prince William County, VA and the state legislature when it attacked public education, and your fucking Koch asshole is trying to do it now.

Aand now the country has a Dept. Ed. head from Michigan that really fucked over the public education system and the put in a charter system she put in place is failing the students, but she made a buck, did you buy chance see her yacht........................your one of the assholes protecting the haves and and attacking the have not mentality right..............

Trump is too scared to campaign where Americans didn't vote for him

By Oliver Willis - October 15, 2018

According to travel documents, Trump has studiously avoided making visits to areas where he might be unpopular.

As Republicans struggle to hold on to their majorities in Congress, Trump is staying far away from the swing and Democratic counties where he might be unpopular — and focusing instead on holding rallies for his sycophantic supporters in deep-red areas.

NBC reports that according to Air Force One travel records, “The president’s itinerary so far has taken him largely to heavily Republican parts of GOP-leaning states and districts to help Republicans who are loyal to his cause.”

Out of a dozen “Make America Great Again” rallies Trump has held since Labor Day, just two of them were held in counties he lost in 2016, NBC reports.

And Trump has mostly traveled to areas where he’s very popular. The average Trump margin of victory in states he’s campaigned in is 20 points. He has also visited five counties where he won more than 60 percent of the vote.

Stacey Abrams: GOP opponent creating 'miasma of fear' over voting in Georgia

Source: The Guardian

Brian Kemp accused of seeking to suspend minority voters from registration rolls under the ‘exact match’ law

As a crisis of potential voter suppression in Georgia deepened, the Democratic candidate for governor accused her opponent of seeking to disenfranchise people of color and women by creating a “miasma of fear” around voting.

Stacey Abrams, who if elected would become the first African American woman governor of any state, is running against Georgia’s Republican secretary of state, Brian Kemp.

A lawsuit filed by civil rights groups on Thursday accused Kemp of seeking to disenfranchise more than 50,000 voters, up to 80% of them minority voters, by suspending voters from registration rolls if records held by various state agencies show any slight discrepancy in how a voter’s name is hyphenated, spelled or spaced.

Any voter whose records betrayed such a discrepancy would not be unregistered but would have to take subjective steps to convince poll workers of his or her identity, thereby risking not having his or her vote counted.

The issue also pulled in another senior Georgia Republican, when it was reported that David Purdue briefly seized a phone from a student who tried to ask a question about voting laws while the senator campaigned for Kemp.

Republicans join far-right figures at Montana anti-government event

State politicians and Oregon occupation leader Ammon Bundy address gathering against federal land management

At a conference in Whitefish, Montana, on Saturday Ammon Bundy, a leader of a group which occupied federal land in 2016, shared a stage with Republican politicians, campaigners against Indian treaty rights and other rightwing groups.

The event, A New Code of the West, was hosted by The West is Our West, a group created in 2016 that has opposed environmentalism and federal land management. The conference attracted around 100 people from five western states.

Speakers addressed the issue of public lands, the administration of which by the federal government they see as constitutionally illegitimate, a belief at odds with most constitutional scholars and supreme court decisions.

Speakers also evinced hostility to the news media and the federal government. Some expressed conspiratorial beliefs.

Sacramento rockers Cake want you to 'Vote Like Hell' for this local congressional candidate

BY JOSHUA TEHEE

Updated October 11, 2018 02:46 PM

Sacramento rock band Cake is hitting the campaign trail in advance of November’s mid-terms election.

The band, known for the 2001 song “Short Skirt/Long Jacket,” is out front with the “Vote Like Hell” project, which helps potential voters register and find polling places with events such as the just announced fundraiser concert for Andrew Janz on Friday, Nov. 2 at the Crest Theatre in downtown Fresno.

Tickets for the event are $40 and $100 (VIP) and available through the online fundraising platform ActBlue, which is expected to raise more than $1 billion in contributions to Democratic candidates and causes during this election cycle.

That includes Janz, the Democrat who is challenging incumbent Devin Nunes for California’s 22nd congressional district.

We need tax police - and they should go after the likes of Donald Trump

David Cay Johnston

A staggering New York Times report on Trump family tax payments proved it: Congress must let the Internal Revenue Service do its job

When the New York Times exposed decades of tax cheating and “outright fraud” by the sitting president, it prompted people to ask important questions about the corrupt practices of the Trump family. The answers are central to the future of America.

Where was the Internal Revenue Service? How did the Trumps get away with decades of schemes the Times said allowed them to evade close to a half-billion dollars of income and gift taxes? Is Donald Trump continuing these practices? Is that why he refuses to make his own tax returns public? Can anything be done about it?

I’m in a unique position to answer those questions. I am the Times’ former tax reporter, the journalist who has covered Trump longer than anyone else, more than 30 years. And my next book will propose an entirely new tax system for the US and other advanced nations.

The answers to the first and second questions are as easy as they are awful.

Congress, which makes tax law, has never properly supported the IRS, which I like calling the Tax Police Department.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/oct/13/new-york-times-donald-trump-tax

-snip-

Let’s hope it decides to work on equal enforcement of the tax laws. Every dollar of tax evaded adds to America’s debt. It means less money to invest in basic scientific research, education and modernizing crumbling infrastructure. Taxes are at the core of democracy. The power to tax is the specific reason the American constitution was adopted, replacing the government-by-bake-sale financing under the Articles of Confederation.
