turbinetree's JournalTrumps pick for DHS chief was at center of Katrina disaster
By Nick Miroff October 14
On Aug 27, 2005, two days before Hurricane Katrina made landfall, officials at the American Red Cross wrote to a top homeland security adviser at the White House, warning that the storm was likely to slam New Orleans as a major hurricane.
The message was sent to Kirstjen Nielsen, whose title was special assistant to the president for prevention, preparedness and response. She was 33 years old.
It was the first of many alarming emails Nielsen would receive over the following days as water poured into New Orleans and the city was deluged. And in the storm of blame that followed the costliest natural disaster in American history, Nielsens team was widely criticized for its passive and clumsy response.
Twelve years later, President Trump has nominated Nielsen to the top job at the Department of Homeland Security. As DHS secretary, she would be in charge of a 240,000-employee agency with a $40 billion budget whose many responsibilities include managing disasters such as Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

While on her watch, over 1800 human beings died........................and in my opinion she should not be in charge of anything
Regulator points the finger directly at Trump after approving massive health care rate increase
Source: Think Progress
For years, Republicans have criticized Obamacare for making health care too expensive, misleadingly claiming that the law has led to skyrocketing costs. But now, the insurance industry and state regulators are complaining that its actually President Trumps actions that are directly responsible for raising premiums.
Days after President Trump signed an executive order to allow people to buy skimpier, cheaper health care plans and confirmed the federal government will stop making critical subsidy payments to insurers, the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance announced it has approved a drastic rate increase for plans sold next year both on and off the the states Affordable Care Act exchange.
In comments made to the Philadelphia Inquirer, acting Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Jessica Altman traced the unexpected rate 30.6 percent increase directly back to President Trumps decision to cut off the cost-sharing reduction (CSR) payments insurers use to subsidize coverage for low-income people.

Steve Scalise says mass shootings are the cost of the Second Amendment
Source: Think Progress
Just weeks after his return to Congress following life-threatening injuries sustained from a shooting at a congressional baseball practice over the summer, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) appeared on Fox News Tuesday morning to defend the Second Amendment, claiming that deadly shootings were the price of freedom.
During a Fox & Friends interview, Scalise was specifically asked how he felt about gun control given that he himself had been shot and given the recent shooting in Las Vegas that left 58 people dead and scores more injured.
Its what our Founding Fathers envisioned. If you go and look at the writings of our Founding Fathers, they believe strongly in the rights of people to arm themselves for self-defense, said Scalise. And thats something thats still strong today, and you see threats against it.

Religious Right Using Hurricane Tragedies To Grab Public Funds For Churches
In between Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, Trump took the time to plant a tweet bomb under the First Amendment. Churches in Texas should be entitled to reimbursement from FEMA Relief Funds for helping victims of Hurricane Harvey (just like others), he twittered.
If it seems a little hasty to start arguing about money before the streets are dry, thats because, well, were talking big money here, and not just disaster money. The thing about todays religious right is it is really focused on the bottom lineand the First Amendment is starting to look like roadkill on the path to the ultimate payday.
The demand for FEMA relief for houses of worship sounded innocuous at first. In view of the devastating news from Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Mississippi, and the ongoing recovery process in Texas and Florida, who could object to helping out churches, especially those that offered aid to hurricane and flood refugees, in their own hour of need? The funny thing is that it seemed some churches couldnt wait to be denied federal money. Even as the floodwaters from Harvey flowed through the streets, three Texas churches filed a federal lawsuit on September 4, alleging that FEMAs policy of excluding houses of worship from disaster-relief grants is unfair and unconstitutional.
One plaintiff, Assembly of God Church, in Rockport, Texas, is the beneficiary of a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe. Whats more heartbreaking is to have wind storm insurance, it would costs [sic] the church over $15,000 a year, explains AshLee Frazier, the daughter of the churchs pastor, Bruce Frazier, on the churchs GoFundMe page. In a small community like Rockport thats simple [sic] not affordable.

I say Bullshit, I don't support the Assembly of God or the Hi-Way Tabernacle and there anti-human being attacks
Trump appointees approve two major pipelines to transport fracked gas
Source: Think Progress
Federal regulators approved two major natural gas pipelines that would transport fracked gas through Virginia, although one of the agencys commissioners issued a surprise vote against construction of both pipelines.
President Donald Trumps two appointees to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) voted late Friday to approve both the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and the Mountain Valley Pipeline. The lone Democrat on the commission, Cheryl LaFleur, issued a written dissent, saying she could not support the projects given the environmental impacts and possible superior alternatives.
The federal agencys approval of the pipeline projects was expected all along the review process. FERC has rejected only a tiny number of natural gas infrastructure applications over the past few decades.
Earlier this year, FERC issued favorable environmental reviews for both pipelines. Commission Chairman Neil Chatterjee and Commissioner Robert Powelson Republican nominees confirmed to FERC this past summer agreed with those reviews in voting to approve the two pipeline projects.

Trumps Commerce Secretary Left More Than $2 Billion Off Of His Financial Disclosure Report
Source: uproxx
Before Wilbur Ross was confirmed by the U.S. Senate with a vote of 72 to 27, the newly appointed commerce secretary told his committee inquirers, I intend to be quite scrupulous about recusal and any topic where there is the slightest scintilla of doubt. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) briefly protested the confirmation, telling his colleagues White Houses refusal to release some of Ross written answers to the Senates questionnaire was troubling. Even so, the matter was altogether forgotten in the ensuing rush of administrative scandals
until Forbes dug a little deeper into the secretarys hidden finances.
As it turns out, Ross [left] more than $2 billion off of his financial disclosure report and therefore out of the public eye when he answered the Senates questionnaire and filed his paperwork in early 2017. And to make matters worse, the commerce secretary only revealed the existence of the missing assets to Forbes when the magazine asked him why the previously reported numbers didnt match up with what he had previously told the magazine he owned:

After Trump threatens the press, senator asks FCC to affirm free speech
Raising an alarm over Donald Trumps repeated attacks last week on free speech protections, a Democratic senator is demanding that board members of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) individually affirm their commitment to first amendment rights.
Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut planned to release a letter on Monday in which he calls on the five-member FCC board of commissioners to declare their personal support for free speech, the Associated Press reported.
Echoing Blumenthals concerns, one member of the commission obliquely criticized FCC chairman Ajit Pais failure to speak out against Trumps attacks.
I cant really speak to what he is thinking, Jessica Rosenworcel told CNNs Reliable Sources on Sunday. But I do think that history wont be kind to silence.
Following what he perceived as tendentious news coverage last week on NBC News, Trump suggested to reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday that free speech protections should come under review.
It is frankly disgusting the way the press is able to write whatever they want to write and people should look into it, Trump said.
