Chief Justice John Roberts is far from the impartial savior Democrats are hoping he'll be: PBS host

Published 1 min ago on January 19, 2020
By Sarah K. Burris

During an MSNBC panel discussion Sunday evening, Alexander Heffner, PBS host of “The Open Mind,” cautioned against putting faith in Chief Justice John Roberts.

In an interview with Rev. Al Sharpton, Heffner outlined why Roberts’ impartiality isn’t exactly what Democrats think it is.

“But I’m tired of hearing about Chief Justice Roberts impartiality, this idea that he’s some kind of paragon of constitutional order,” Heffner said. “The proof is in the pudding. The reality is this Supreme Court had an opportunity to review the cases about whether the public should have access to Trump’s business and personal tax returns, whether the public should have the testimony of [John] Bolton and company.”

He noted that in those cases, the High Court refused to give a decision in a timely manner. If they had released a decision on whether the White House can ignore a subpoena, Roberts likely wouldn’t be put in this position.

Cornyn Says Giuliani 'Not Relevant' To Senate Trial, Calls Parnas A 'Grifter'

Despite how President Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani played a central role in the Ukraine pressure campaign, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said he believes he’s “not relevant” to the Senate impeachment trial during an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday morning.

On Friday, the House Intelligence Committee released text messages that show an aide to Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) — the top Republican on the committee — in frequent contact with now-indicted Giuliani associate Lev Parnas, which further exposes Nunes’ ties to Trump’s Ukraine pressure campaign to dig up false allegations against former Vice President Joe Biden.

“That’s a relationship that causes many of us to sort of scratch our heads,” Cornyn said, when asked whether he has any questions for Giuliani in light of the Nunes-Parnas text messages. “I’d say [Giuliani is] not relevant to the articles and what the Senate is going to be asked to do, impeaching a president for the third time in American history for a non-crime over events that never occurred.”

When asked earlier in the interview about the text messages between Nunes’ aide and Parnas, Cornyn appeared to characterize the indicted Giuliani associate — who claimed last week that Trump “knew exactly what was going on” — as a “grifter.”

Schiff Warns Intel Agencies Bullied Into Silence: 'Their Job Is To Speak Truth To Power'

Politics 1/19/20 9:58am Read time: 2 minutes

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) confirms reports that intelligence agencies do not want to testify publicly about global security threats.
By Karoli Kuns

Late last week, Politico reported that intelligence agencies were balking at testifying in an open setting as they generally do each year on global security threats because they are afraid of making President Cheato Trump angry.

According to their report, officials from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence don’t want agency chiefs to be seen on-camera as disagreeing with the president on big issues such as Iran, Russia or North Korea. Yeah, why would we want to disagree with an irrational thug who shakes down allies for personal political gain, after all?

On This Week, George Stephanopoulos asked Rep. Adam Schiff whether or not it is true and whether he will decide not to hold an open hearing.

"The intelligence community is reluctant to have an open hearing, something that we had done every year prior to the Trump administration, because they're worried about angering the president," Schiff confirmed.

Conservative pundit Hugh Hewitt found himself trending on Sunday after people reacted harshly to his analysis of impeachment.

Conservative pundit Hugh Hewitt found himself trending on Sunday after people reacted harshly to his analysis of impeachment.

During an appearance on Meet the Press, Hewitt argued that President Donald Trump's action in Ukraine did not rise to the level of an impeachable offense.

Hewitt also revealed that he planned to vote for Sen. Bernie Sanders in the Virginia Democratic presidential primary as a way to foment chaos among Democrats.

Even though Hewitt said that he would vote for Trump in the general election, he explained that he was casting a primary vote for Sanders so that Americans could see what a real socialist looks like.

Sen. Richard Shelby Excuses Trump's Criminal Acts As 'Political Statements'

It seems there is absolutely no level of open criminality that won't be excused by Trump's Republican enablers.
By Heather

I guess it's asking too much of ABC This Week host George Stephanopoulos to remind Republican Alabama Senator Richard Shelby that it is actually illegal to solicit foreign interference in our elections here in the United States, as Trump has done time and time again.

Here's Shelby this Sunday pretending that Trump isn't involved up to his neck in the Ukrainian scandal, and excusing what Trump has done in public, asking everyone from Russia to China, to whoever to get involved in U.S. elections as just "political statements" and a "mistake."

Anyone think Shelby would be saying that this stuff just "happens all the time" if it was a Democrat flagrantly breaking the law as we've seen the Trump administration do since taking power?

Here's Shelby's blatant hypocrisy in the clip above via ABC:

This asshole needs to recuse himself from the trial along with everyone of thse assholes that go around thinking that witnesses need to not be called, the only time that happens is when a criminal tells the judge he is guilty.....................

Rep. Adam Schiff Shreds McConnell's 'Mockery' Of An Impeachment Trial With No Witnesses

Source: Crooks and Liars

Politics 1/19/20 8:21am Read time: 2 minutes

Rep. Adam Schiff took apart Mitch McConnell's proposed "mockery" of an impeachment trial if the Senate allows it to proceed with no witnesses.

By Heather

House Intelligence Chair Rep. Adam Schiff laid out very plainly to ABC's George Stephanopoulos why Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will make a complete mockery of the impeachment trial if he does Trump's bidding and doesn't even allow for witnesses.

Stephanopoulos asked Schiff whether they may ask for Lev Parnas to testify, and whether or not they're concerned about Parnas being seen as credible or not given the fact that he's under indictment.

"Well, look, you know, it is the fact with many of the people surrounding the president that they end up indicted. These are the people that the president has chosen to work with, people like, you know, Michael Cohen, like Lev Parnas, like so many others, Paul Manafort," Schiff explained. "And these are people that do have information about the president's misconduct. But right now, George, we don't know what witnesses will be allowed and even if we'll be allowed witnesses."

Exactly. Trump's the one who chose to surround himself with criminals. Schiff went onto explain what public reaction would be if there was a courtroom trial that was allowed to be conducted in the manner these Republicans and McConnell are proposing.

Montana's Open Congressional Seat Is Ready For Progressive Dem Tom Winter

by Howie Klein

Because it shouldn’t be filled with a Republican– from either party. Meet Blue America’s first endorsement of 2020.

There’s a red hot 2020 race for Montana’s one at-large congressional district to replace pugilistic multimillionaire Greg Gianforte. State Rep. Tom Winter is the progressive in the race, although the DCCC thinks they’ve found their very own ‘next Jeff Van Drew’ and are working against Winter.

We asked him to help us understand what’s going on in his state in regard to his race, one that the national media has been almost completely ignoring.

“Running for Congress as a Democrat out here in Montana,” he told us, “can get lonely… not because of the seven hour drives to fundraisers in Billings– I like the road. It’s not the blizzards– I like winter, after all. And it’s certainly not Montana being unfriendly to Democrats– I previously won a +11 point Trump district, and Democrats represent us in the Governor’s mansion and in the U.S. Senate.”

“No,” he continued, “it’s lonely because within my own party it seems at times that I am one of the only voices fighting for Democratic principles at all. From impeachment to the climate crisis to workers’ rights to healthcare, I find myself battling against Republican talking points spouted by my establishment Democratic opponent… For months I have been the only Montana congressional candidate from either party loudly and cogently making the argument for impeachment. Any Democratic candidate that is not supporting the hard work of Congress on impeachment is running against the party and the values that make us who we are.

January 18, 2020 By Bob Brigham

There has been more upheaval at the National Security Council according to new reports.

“Andrew Peek, the senior director for European and Russian affairs at the National Security Council, has been placed on administrative leave pending a security-related investigation,” Axios reported Saturday, citing people familiar with the situation.

“Peek had been expected to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland next week, where President Trump is expected to meet with a number of world leaders as the impeachment trial takes place back in the Senate,” Axios added.

Bloomberg News senior White House reporter Jennifer Jacobs offered additional reporting.
