OFFICIAL TRAILER: AS FAST AS HER

an 21, 2020 • 01:00
Take a look at the full trailer for As Fast as Her, a Blackhawks Originals feature on Chicago native and Olympic gold medalist Kendall Coyne.

https://www.nhl.com/blackhawks/video/official-trailer-as-fast-as-her/t-277437096/c-5146543

Kendall Coyne's connection to the Chicago Blackhawks began earnestly when she proudly wore No. 7 on her jersey as a nod to Hall of Fame defenseman Chris Chelios.

"Obviously, growing up in Palos Heights, I have been a Blackhawks fan my entire life," said Coyne, 27, who won a gold medal in the 2018 Winter Olympics. "When I was a kid, the Blackhawks games were not on TV, so my parents would bring my brother and me to watch the Blackhawks play. The stadium didn't look like it does today. We would sit in the 300 section and we would actually play shinny hockey, then watch the game, then get back to our shinny hockey game.

"When I started playing (organized team hockey), I was No. 7 for Chris Chelios for most of my career. And my parents ... I am so fortunate that they took the time and effort to drive me down to the United Center and allow us to watch those games. Because otherwise I wasn't watching hockey. I was only playing it. I wanted to be Chris Chelios for a big chunk of my career until I met Cammi (Granato)."

The Wandering Senators: Are Lawmakers Allowed To Roam About During Trial?

By Kate Riga
|
January 23, 2020 1:06 p.m.

Reporters present at the impeachment trial in the Senate have noticed a whole host of lawmakers wandering in and out of the chamber during the lengthy days, which earlier this week stretched on until 2 a.m. ET.

A tally from freelance reporter Michael McAuliff during Wednesday’s proceeding:

Michael McAuliff

@mmcauliff
Just counted 21 empty seats on the GOP side of the Senate, 2 on the Dem side, a couple hours into Schiff's presentation. Some are just stretching their legs, but most are not in the chamber. Some of them have been out of there for a while.

The observations raise two issues: one of legality and one of optics.

Is It Allowed?
Nothing in the official Senate impeachment rules forbids it. The rules, dating from March 2, 1868, make little mention of the chamber at all, except to determine that the doors to the Senate should be left open, unless the members are in deliberations.

Senate leaders Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) circulated their own guidance ahead of the trial, where they made passing mention of the attendance expectations.

Meanwhile, some of those who may have the most to lose by being sequestered stayed securely in place for the duration on Wednesday. According to CNN, Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), both running for President, stayed in the chamber for the entirety of the proceedings. They were reportedly joined by Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Susan Collins (R-ME), two of the most scrutinized lawmakers due to their past willingness to vote with Democrats.

Mnuchin Attacks Greta Thunberg, Says She Needs To Study Economics

Source: Talking Points Memo

The 17-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg truly seems to be getting under the Trump administration's skin.

On Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin took a shot at the teen during a press conference at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland after she pleaded with world leaders to stop investing in fossil fuels.

"Is she the chief economist? Who is she? I'm confused," Mnuchin joked.

"After she goes to college and studies economics in college, she can come back and explain that to us," he added.

Trump Flips Out About His Senate Impeachment Trial On Twitter

By Cristina Cabrera
|
January 23, 2020 9:07 a.m.

After mostly confining his Twitter feed to retweets from GOP allies this week, a livid President Donald Trump fired off tweet after tweet in an extended rant about his Senate impeachment trial on Thursday morning.

“The Democrat House would not give us lawyers, or not one witness, but now demand that the Republican Senate produce the witnesses that the House never sought, or even asked for?” he tweeted. “They had their chance, but pretended to rush. Most unfair & corrupt hearing in Congressional history!”

The tweet contained multiple falsehoods; House Democrats had invited White House lawyers to participate in the Judiciary Committee’s impeachment hearings and had issued several subpoenas to the Trump administration officials whom Democrats seek to subpoena again in the Senate trial. However, GOP senators have voted against allowing witnesses and documents.

“No matter what you give to the Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrats, it will never be enough!” Trump wrote a few minutes later.

FBI Missed Judge's Deadline To Turn Over Kushner Interview Memos In Mueller Probe

By Cristina Cabrera

January 23, 2020 8:25 a.m.

Last week, the FBI did not comply with U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton’s order to give CNN and Buzzfeed News the memos from the agency’s interviews with White House senior adviser Jared Kushner in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Justice Department lawyer Courtney Enlow told CNN on Wednesday that “a member of the intelligence community” needs to review the memos and make certain redactions first.

The memos “will be released with the appropriate redactions” afterward, Enlow said without giving an exact timeline.

Walton ordered the FBI to hand over Mueller’s notes of witness interviews in CNN and Buzzfeed News’ lawsuit over the records. He gave the intelligence agency a deadline of January 17 to give all of the requested documents to the two news outlets.

Trump Brags About Concealing Impeachment Evidence: 'We Have All the Material, They Don't'

The president says impeachment is going well and that he has been watching from Davos

By PETER WADE

President Trump said he’s happy with the way the impeachment trial is going thus far because his administration has not released “materials” that would hurt his cause.

“When we released that conversation all hell broke out with the Democrats,” Trump said. “Because they said, ‘Wait a minute, this is much different than [what Adam Schiff] told us.’ ”

The president continued, “So, we’re doing very well. I got to watch [the impeachment trial] enough. I thought our team did a very good job. But honestly, we have all the material. They don’t have the material.”

Trump made the stark admission while attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

When asked about the impeachment trial, Trump initially spoke about what he usually refers to as the “perfect call” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In that phone conversation, on July 25, 2019, Trump reportedly asked Zelensky to investigate the Bidens eight times.

Trump says 'with me, there is no lying' after lying 15,000 times in office

By Emily Singer -January 23, 2020 10:44 AM

Trump has averaged roughly 15 false or misleading comments per day while he's been in office, according to the Washington Post.

Donald Trump on Wednesday sought to differentiate his impeachment with that of former President Bill Clinton, saying that Clinton was impeached for lying — something Trump claimed he doesn't do.

"There was a lot of lying going on. There were a lot of things — a lot of bad things," Trump said at a news conference from Davos, Switzerland, referencing Clinton. "Now, with me, there’s no lying. There’s no nothing. They have nothing."

Trump's claim that he doesn't lie is a lie in and of itself.

In fact, Trump has become infamous for his lies and falsehoods.

He even told lies at the same news conference in which he claimed he doesn't lie.

ULTRA-MILLIONAIRE TAX, By Elizabeth Warren

For decades, the wealthy and the well-connected have put American government to work for their own narrow interests. As a result, a small group of families has taken a massive amount of the wealth American workers have produced, while America’s middle class has been hollowed out.

The result is an extreme concentration of wealth not seen in any other leading economy. The 400 richest Americans currently own more wealth than all Black households and a quarter of Latino households combined. According to an analysis from economists Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman from the University of California-Berkeley, the richest top 0.1% has seen its share of American wealth nearly triple from 7% to 20% between the late 1970s and 2016, while the bottom 90% has seen its share of wealth decline from 35% to 25% in that same period. Put another way, the richest 130,000 families in America now hold nearly as much wealth as the bottom 117 million families combined.

Our tax code focuses on taxing income, but a family’s wealth is also an important measure of how much it has benefitted from the economy and its ability to pay taxes. And judged against wealth, our tax system asks the rich to pay a lot less than everyone else. According to Saez and Zucman, the families in the top 0.1% are projected to owe 3.2% of their wealth in federal, state, and local taxes this year, while the bottom 99% are projected to owe 7.2%.

While we must make income taxes more progressive, that alone won’t straighten out our slanted tax code or our lopsided economy. Consider two people: an heir with $500 million in yachts, jewelry, and fine art, and a teacher with no savings in the bank. If both the heir and the teacher bring home $50,000 in labor income next year, they would pay the same amount in federal taxes, despite their vastly different circumstances. Increasing income taxes won’t address this problem.

GOP senators keep breaking their own impeachment trial rules

By Emily Singer -January 23, 2020 9:40 AM

Impeachment trial rules require senators to remain at their desks while proceedings are going on.

More than 20 Republican senators violated Senate rules on Wednesday by leaving the chamber while House Democrats made their case for why Donald Trump deserved to be impeached, according to reporter Michael McAuliff.

Rules for the trial require senators to remain at their desks while the trial is taking place, and are banned from bringing in electronics such as cellphones or computers. Senators are also not allowed to talk while arguments are being made.

However, multiple Republicans violated those rules, getting up for extended periods of time while the House Democratic impeachment managers made their case for why Trump should be removed from office.

Democrats spent hours on Wednesday laying out the case against Trump.
