WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trumps lawyers opened their impeachment trial defense in a rare Saturday session by accusing Democrats of striving to overturn the results of the 2016 election, saying the Democrats investigations into his dealings with Ukraine were not a fact-finding mission but a politically motivated effort to drive him from the White House.
Theyre here to perpetrate the most massive interference in an election in American history, White House Counsel Pat Cipollone told senators. And we cant allow that to happen.
The Trump legal teams arguments were aimed at rebutting allegations that the president abused his power when he asked Ukraine to investigate political rival Joe Biden and then obstructed Congress as it tried to investigate. Trump is mounting a wide-ranging, aggressive defense asserting an expansive view of presidential powers and portraying him as besieged by political opponents determined to ensure that he wont be re-elected this November.
Theyre asking you not only to overturn the results of the last election, but as Ive said before, theyre asking you to remove President Trump from an election thats occurring in approximately nine months, Cipollone said. Theyre asking you to tear up all the ballots across this country on their own initiative.

Why your zodiac sign is probably wrong

I was born a Capricorn (please dont judge me), but the Sun was in the middle of Sagittarius when I was born.
As a professor emeritus of astronomy, I am often asked about the difference between astrology and astronomy. The practice of astrology, which predicts ones fate and fortune based on the positions of the Sun, Moon, stars and planets, dates back to ancient times. It was intermingled with the science of astronomy back then in fact, many astronomers of old made scientific observations that are valuable even today. But once Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo realized the planets orbit the Sun, rather than the Earth, and Newton discovered the physical laws behind their behavior, astrology and astronomy split, never to be reunited.
The science of astronomy is now at odds with one of the basic organizing principles in astrology the dates of the zodiac.

Dems pick Whitmer, Escobar for Trump State of Union response
Source: Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will deliver the Democratic response to President Donald Trumps State of the Union address on Feb. 4. Rep. Veronica Escobar of Texas will deliver the Spanish-language response.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer made the announcement Friday.
They praised Whitmer for her efforts to ensure clean drinking water is available in communities across Michigan, which was scarred by the 2014 water crisis in Flint. About 25,000 people have sued over the crisis, in which a change in the source of the citys water resulted in lead contamination.
Whitmer, a former prosecutor who was sworn in as governor last year, defeated Republican state Attorney General Bill Schuette, a Trump ally. She had previously served as Democratic Leader in the Michigan state Senate and was the first woman to lead the Senate caucus.

(Reuters) - About 8.9 million TV viewers watched the U.S. Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump on Wednesday, the first day Democrats laid out their case against the president, marking a significant drop from the roughly 11 million viewers who watched on Tuesday, according to Nielsen ratings data.
The audience includes viewership from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm EST on Walt Disney Cos ABC, AT&T Incs CNN, ViacomCBSs CBS, Comcast Corps NBC and MSNBC, and Fox Corps Fox News. The trial continued until 9:43 p.m. EST that night.
The third presidential impeachment trial in U.S. history is unlikely to end with a vote that removes Trump from office, as Republicans who control the Senate have continually voiced support for the president.
However, it is certain to cast a shadow over the November 2020 presidential election, even though ratings for the first two days indicate only a fraction of the more than 130 million Americans expected to cast ballots will have watched the first days of the proceedings.

Financier doubts add to Boeing's MAX headaches

DUBLIN (Reuters) - To restore faith in the 737 MAX, Boeing needs to prove its flagship jet is not just airworthy but also a safe investment.
At a gathering in Dublin this week of the titans of the multibillion-dollar aircraft leasing industry, which finances half the worlds fleet, cracks were appearing in that effort.
Boeing said on Tuesday its troubled workhorse - grounded last March after two crashes in which 346 people died - should receive approval by mid-year from U.S regulators, paving the way for hundreds of jets to resume service later this year.
But in scores of high-stakes negotiations in the background, it is trying to convince banks, leasing firms and airlines that the investment case for thousands more of the jets - worth hundreds of billions of dollars - remains intact.
Airplane owners and investors said some lenders were already demanding higher collateral in deals on the MAX. One airline said financing for pre-delivery payments had dried up amid the uncertainty - though the market wont be fully tested until closer to renewed deliveries.

Trump impeachment prosecutor, Adam Schiff, is becoming Exhibit A in president's defense

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The lawmaker walking U.S. senators methodically through the case for removing President Donald Trump from office is also becoming Exhibit A in efforts by the presidents allies to defend him.
Over the first three days of Trumps impeachment trial, the head of the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff, has led a team of Democratic lawmakers serving as prosecutors as they lay out their evidence that Trump abused his power by pressuring Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, a leading 2020 Democratic presidential contender.
Even a few of Trumps fellow Republicans have said Schiff has made an effective case.
At the same time, Trumps lawyers and political allies have made Schiff a central focus of their efforts to defend the president during his trial. When they laid out their written case for why Trump should be acquitted, the presidents lawyers mentioned Schiffs name almost 100 times.

Warren Pledges To Release Impeachment Docs Withheld By WH

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) pledged Friday to release the trove of impeachment-related documents that the White House has barred, should she become president.

On day one as president, I will order the release of every document related to this impeachment inquiry that the administration has been hiding. The public needs to know what happened. All the other candidates for president should commit to take this step as well.
She added that Republicans should know that this evidence wont be hidden forever.
Warren made the promise just days after her campaign unveiled its Department of Justice task force to investigate members of the Trump administration for possible corruption.
Her proposals are carefully timed. Democrats are frustrated as the trial unfolds and, despite Rep. Adam Schiffs (D-CA) adept leadership of the argument, all signs point to an easy acquittal at the hands of Republican senators.
Warren may be as powerless as her Democratic peers now but at least she can promise retroactive justice, should she win the election.

And every other candidate running for the job should state if they would do the same thing..................yes or no................

Senate GOP Is Coming Around To The Idea That What Trump Did Was Okay
By Tierney Sneed

January 23, 2020 10:35 p.m.
Were three days into the impeachment trial, and Senate Republicans have begun floating their what President Trump did was okay trial balloon.
For the most part, theyre still avoiding weighing in directly about the Trump conduct House managers have described, and instead have thrown around procedural complaints or claims about how the Trump administrations Ukraine policy has been stronger than the Obamas.
But listen closely to the main themes in their reactions to the Houses meticulously built case. What youll hear being shaped is a defense that accepts that Trump mounted a secret pressure campaign to force a Ukrainian investigation into his 2020 rival and a defense that concludes that such an effort was permissible.
Nowhere is this growing GOP embrace of Trumps Ukraine behavior more evident than in how theyre handling the ongoing debate over calling witnesses.
