CNN hosts stunned after GOP senator refuses to say Trump shouldn't break the law to win reelection

Published 1 min ago on January 30, 2020
By Brad Reed

CNN hosts Jim Sciutto and Poppy Harlow on Thursday found themselves stunned after Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) refused to say whether he thought President Donald Trump should be allowed to do anything he wants to win the 2020 election.

During their interview, the hosts asked Barrasso what he made of Trump lawyer Alan Dershowitz’s now-infamous argument that the president shouldn’t be impeached for shaking down a foreign government to win help with his election on the grounds that he believes getting reelected is in the public interest.

“What’s your reaction to that extremely expansive definition of presidential power?” Sciutto asked him. “Do you reject that argument?”

“What I’m saying is, presidents have specific powers under the Constitution, I listened to Dershowitz make that case yesterday, and what he is saying is even if the case is proven by the House, it still doesn’t rise to the level of impeachment,” Barrasso replied.

Sciutto, however, pressed him to answer the question.

3 Senate Dems from red states waver on impeachment votes

By ALAN FRAM and ANDREW TAYLOR
today

WASHINGTON (AP) — As the Senate impeachment trial grinds toward a climax, it remains unclear how three Democrats will vote on whether to toss President Donald Trump from office.

Sens. Doug Jones of Alabama, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona are all question marks, though they’re widely regarded as likely to vote for at least one of the two impeachment articles.

Unlike a quartet of wavering Republicans who could put Trump in peril as lawmakers decide whether to call witnesses and extend the proceedings, the three Democrats’ votes on whether to acquit him won’t likely affect the trial’s outcome. It seems certain that the GOP-run Senate will lack the 67 votes needed to remove Trump from office, no matter what the trio does.

But the Democrats’ decisions will color their political careers and this year’s presidential campaign. If one or more of them votes to acquit Trump — even voting against one article of impeachment while supporting the other, which many consider likely — it could alienate some Democratic voters, mark their legacies and let Trump spend his reelection campaign asserting that he was cleared by a bipartisan vote.

UK automakers report drop in investment, production

By DANICA KIRKA

LONDON (AP) — British auto production dropped for a third straight year in 2019, as carmakers continued to hold off on investment amid uncertainty over the country’s departure from the European Union.

The anemic figures announced Thursday by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders will increase the pressure on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to work out a favorable trade deal with the EU because the industry directly employs 168,000 people and contributes 6 billion pounds ($7.8 billion) a year to the economy. There are fears things will only get worse if carmakers, who rely on just-in-time supply chains, lose the ability to participate on an equal footing in the European single market.

After more than three years of protracted negotiations about how to leave the EU following the June 2016 referendum, Britain is finally set to do so on Friday. Though it won’t be an EU member after, it enters a so-called transition period that will allow current trading rules to remain in effect until the end of the year. Auto executives are pushing for a free-trade deal as soon as possible to prevent them from closing plants and moving elsewhere.

Figures released Thursday show total production fell 14.2% last year to 1.3 million vehicles, the lowest since 2010. Production for export markets declined 14.7% to 1.06 million vehicles — the majority of which went to the EU.

AP PHOTOS: Irish border residents watch for Brexit fallout

By DAVID GOLDMAN

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) — The border was drawn in 1921, splitting communities and sometimes property, as the British government sought to create a home for the majority Protestant population of Northern Ireland at a time when the largely Catholic Republic of Ireland won its independence.

Today, that 310-mile (500-kilometer) frontier is largely invisible. The only way motorists know they have crossed into Northern Ireland is from the speed limit signs, which use miles per hour measurements, rather than the metric system used in the south. Keen observers might notice a slight change in the pavement as well.

As Brexit takes effect Friday, residents on both sides of the border are concerned about protecting the relative peace and prosperity after the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. That accord helped end three decades of sectarian violence between paramilitary groups that wanted to reunify Ireland and those who insisted the six counties of Northern Ireland should remain part of the U.K.

Lisa Partridge, a 28-year-old tour operator raised in a British military family, remembers how it was “completely normal to check under the family car for a bomb every morning before you went to school.?

#MittOrGetOffThePot: Romney urged to 'save GOP from itself' and vote for impeachment witnesses

Published 2 hours ago on January 29, 2020
By Travis Gettys

Social media users pushed the famously indecisive Sen. Mitt Romney to #MittOrGetOffThePot as he decides whether to vote for additional testimony in President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial.

The Senate trial is moving Wednesday to 16 hours of questions and answers from senators, House impeachment managers and Trump’s defense team, but some Republicans have signaled they may join Democrats in voting to hear from new witnesses such as John Bolton, the ousted national security adviser.

Romney “made a strong pitch” for witnesses during a closed-door lunch Monday with other GOP senators, as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell tries to keep his caucus in line and bring the trial to a swift conclusion.

Twitter users begged Romney to “do the right thing” and call for Bolton and possibly other witnesses to provide details about Trump’s pressure scheme against Ukraine.

Trump's lawyers gave thousands to Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz

before the impeachment trial began

Published 2 hours ago on January 29, 2020

By Igor Derysh, Salon

President Trump’s legal team made numerous campaign contributions to Republican senators overseeing the impeachment trial.

Former independent counsels Ken Starr and Robert Ray, who both investigated former President Bill Clinton ahead of his impeachment, contributed thousands of dollars to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell last year before they joined the president’s team, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics (CFPR).

Starr, who lamented that “we are living in … the age of impeachment” during the trial on Monday and accused Democrats of waging a “domestic war,” gave $2,800 to McConnell in July 2019, according to CFPR.

Ray, who wanted to indict Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair but now claims Trump has been vindicated by the transcript of his July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, contributed the maximum $5,600 to McConnell in September 2019, according to the report.

The contributions came months before McConnell bragged to Fox News host Sean Hannity that he would be in “total coordination with the White House counsel’s office and the people who are representing the president in the well of the Senate.”

Kobe Bryant's helicopter not equipped with vital warning system

Published 2 hours ago on January 29, 2020
By Agence France-Presse

The helicopter that crashed into a Los Angeles hillside killing NBA legend Kobe Bryant and eight others, was not equipped with vital software that alerts pilots when aircraft are too close to the ground, officials said.

The terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS), which is designed to send a warning when a collision appears imminent, had not been installed on Bryant’s Sikorsky S-76 helicopter, the National Transport Safety Board’s (NTSB) Jennifer Homendy said.

“Certainly, TAWS could have helped,” NBC News reported Homendy as saying, adding that she could not conclude that its use would have prevented the crash.

The warning system is not mandatory on helicopters under Federal Aviation Administration regulations, despite the NTSB recommending that it be made so on all helicopters with six or more passenger seats, following a 2004 crash.

And the cost of putting this system on a helicopter..................

Industry officials have estimated the cost of retrofitting such a system—which in some cases can give pilots an audible warning 10 seconds or more before a potential collision with the ground—at roughly $25,000 to $40,000.

And lets not forget the cost of training the pilot for the system....................

Government agency admits it's not monitoring foreign spending at Trump hotel

By Dan Desai Martin -January 28, 2020 3:49 PM

Foreign governments may be personally enriching Donald Trump by staying at the Trump International Hotel, which the Trump Organization runs through a lease from the GSA.

The head of the Government Services Agency (GSA) admitted Tuesday morning that she had no idea how much money foreign governments were spending at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., and had not bothered to find out.

GSA Administrator Emily Murphy's comments came in response to questions from Rep. John Garamendi (D-CA) during an Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management subcommittee hearing.

"Could you please confirm for the record that the GSA has no idea whatsoever as to how much spending by foreign governments accounts for the income and profits at the Trump Hotel?" Garamendi asked.

"That's correct, sir," Murphy said, adding that she only knew what she had read in newspapers.

WH Accuses Bolton Of Selling Out 'Potential National Security' With Bombshell Book

By Cristina Cabrera

January 28, 2020 8:14 a.m.

White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham accused former National Security Adviser John Bolton of selling out the country’s national security after the New York Times published another explosive account from his tell-all book on Monday night.

During an appearance on Fox Business’ “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” Grisham railed against Bolton after the Times’ report on his unpublished manuscript revealed that he had privately spoken with Attorney General Bill Barr about his concerns that President Donald Trump was doing personal favors for the presidents of China and Turkey.

According to Bolton, Barr responded by saying he himself was concerned that Trump’s friendliness with the two authoritarian leaders was undermining the independent nature of the Justice Department’s investigations into Chinese and Turkish businesses.

“Here’s a man who purports to care about the national security of this country,” Grisham said after the Times’ report came out. “And to leave the White House and immediately go write a book, it’s really disappointing.”

DOJ Denies Bolton And Barr Discussed Trump's 'Personal Favors' To Autocratic Leaders

Source: Talking Points Memo

By Cristina Cabrera

According to the Times, Bolton wrote that he had told Barr he was worried that President Donald Trump was granting personal favors for Chinese President Xi Jinping and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, two authoritarian leaders whom Trump has often praised.

Barr then reportedly expressed concern over how Trump’s friendliness with the two leaders gave the impression that he was exercising “undue influence,” in the Times’ words, on the DOJ’s probes into businesses in Turkey and China.

Department of Justice spokesperson Kerri Kupec claimed in a statement that while the DOJ has not read the manuscript, the Times had “grossly mischaracterized” the conversation between the two Trump officials.

“There was no discussion of ‘personal favors’ or ‘undue influence’ on investigations, nor did Attorney General Barr state that the President’s conversations with foreign leaders was improper,” Kupec said.
