House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy claimed impeachment was somehow to blame for Trump's escalation with Iran.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy went on Fox News Tuesday morning and seemed to suggest Donald Trump ordered the strike killing Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani because the House Intelligence Committee focused on impeachment instead of Iran.
On Monday, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), chair of the Intelligence Committee, called Trump's decision "provocative," criticized Trump's threat to destroy Iranian cultural sites, and described Trump's behavior as "the acts of a President with no functional national security process."
Asked by Fox host Pete Hegseth to respond, McCarthy blamed Schiff for Iranian-backed attacks against U.S. troops.
"You know what? He's the chairman of the Intel Committee," McCarthy said about Schiff. "Maybe had he spent the last year working on that — trying to protect us from what was happening in Iran, from the bombing of the tankers, Saudi Arabia, taking down our drones. Instead of taking that committee and making an impeachment, he would never have made that comment."

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) has yet to resign from Congress more than a month after pleading guilty to a felony count of misusing campaign funds — raising questions about whether he will follow through with his pledge to leave his seat "shortly after the holidays."
The GOP lawmaker — who faces up to five years in prison for his crimes — stood accused of using hundreds of thousands of dollars from his campaign war chest to live a lavish life that included international travel and private school for his children.
Prosecutors also alleged that Hunter spent campaign funds to carry out extramarital affairs with congressional aides and other women he encountered in his role as a member of Congress — a violation of House ethics rules. A year ago, the House voted to ban members of Congress from having sexual relationships with their own employees.
Hunter has refused to elaborate on when he actually plans to resign his seat, only giving the vague promise to leave after the holidays, according to the Associated Press.

Mike Pence incorrectly claimed that Iran helped the 9/11 hijackers that attacked the World Trade Towers in 2001. In fact, Pence’s claim is not only wrong, it was actually investigated by while Pence was in Congress.
The National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, also known as the 9/11 Commission began in 2002, “to prepare a full and complete account of the circumstances surrounding the September 11 attacks.”
As Washington Post senior political reporter Aaron Blake pointed out, page 241 of the 9/11 report which said the opposite.
“KSM and Binalshibh have confirmed that several of the 9/11 hijackers (at least eight, according to Binalshibh) transited Iran on their way to or from Afghanistan, taking advantage of the Iranian practice of not stamping Saudi passports. They deny any other reason for the hijackers’ travel to Iran. They also deny any relationship between the hijackers and Hezbollah,” the report said.

The IRS Tried to Crack Down on Rich People Using an "Abusive" Tax Deduction. It Hasn't Gone So Well.
The tax agency, Justice Department and Congress have all taken aim at a much-abused deduction exploited by wealthy investors. Yet the crackdown is having minimal impact, costing the Treasury billions.

In March 2019, the IRS added a scheme to its annual “Dirty Dozen” list of “the worst of the worst tax scams.” That same scheme was targeted, just weeks earlier, when the U.S. Department of Justice filed a fraud lawsuit against a handful of promoters allegedly responsible for generating more than $2 billion in improper tax write-offs. And the Senate Finance Committee has been investigating that very same racket, recently demanding thousands of pages of documents from six promoters. Lawmakers from both parties have introduced legislation to halt the same practice.
The scheme they’re all trying to kill is what’s called a “syndicated conservation easement,” which the IRS calls “abusive” and says has resulted in bogus deductions for the rich that have cost the U.S. Treasury billions in revenues.
A conservation easement, in its original, legitimate form, is granted when a landowner permanently protects pristine land from development. In that scenario, the public enjoys the benefit of undeveloped land and the taxpayer gets a charitable deduction. By contrast, the syndicated form, created and packaged by profit-seeking middlemen known as “promoters,” involves buying up land, finding an appraiser willing to declare that it has huge development value and thus is worth many times the purchase price, then selling stakes in the deal to wealthy investors who extract tax deductions that are often five or more times what they put in. (ProPublica investigated syndicated easements in the 2017 article “The Billion-Dollar Loophole.”)
But the multifront crackdown seems to be having, at best, a limited effect. There were signs that the pace of syndicated deals has eased, according to an IRS letter to Congress in July 2018 that cited incomplete data; that’s the most recent official statement from the agency, which declined to comment for this article. And some entities doing syndicated projects have seen their business drop or have even left the field. But IRS commissioner Chuck Rettig offered a different picture to the Senate Finance Committee this spring. “Syndicated transactions have absolutely not declined,” he testified. “They’re still there.”

Arizona Officials Kill 3 Mountain Lions Who Ate Human Remains Near Popular Hiking Trail
Officials in Arizona killed three mountain lions who ate human remains close to a popular hiking trail.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department discovered the human remains Tuesday during an investigation at Pima Canyon Trail near Tucson and closed the trail, the department said. The Arizona Game & Fish Department said in a statement Wednesday the lions were killed overnight.
The mountain lions are not suspected of killing the victim, Game & Fish officials said. Authorities are trying to determine what happened on the trail, the sheriff’s department said.
“Mountain lions are not routinely scavengers. A mountain lion eating human remains is abnormal behavior. Those that do are more likely to attack a human being in the future,” Game & Fish Department Regional Supervisor Raul Vega said in a statement provided to CNN affiliate KGUN.
Vega added: “In addition, they did so 50 yards from a popular hiking trail and within sight of homes, and repeatedly showed no fear of responding officers.”

While Trump’s national security team thought withholding the money went against U.S. national security interests, Trump still wouldn’t budge.
Thanks to the testimony of several Trump administration officials, we now know what Trump was waiting on: a commitment from Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden.
But getting at that truth hasn’t been easy and the Trump administration continues to try to obscure it. It is blocking key officials from testifying and is keeping documentary evidence from lawmakers investigating the Ukraine story. For example, this note from Duffey to McCusker was never turned over to House investigators and the Trump administration is continuing to try to keep it secret.

More drugmakers hike U.S. prices as new year begins

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Drugmakers including Bristol-Myers Squibb Co, Gilead Sciences Inc, and Biogen Inc hiked U.S. list prices on more than 50 drugs on Wednesday, bringing total New Year’s Day drug price increases to more than 250, according to data analyzed by healthcare research firm 3 Axis Advisors.
Reuters reported on Tuesday that drugmakers including Pfizer Inc, GlaxoSmithKline PLC and Sanofi SA were planning to increase prices on more than 200 drugs in the United States on Jan. 1.
Nearly all of the price increases are below 10% and the median price increase is around 5%, according to 3 Axis.
More early year price increases could still be announced.
