White House denies Trump's Pennsylvania trip is for Saccone campaign

Source: The Hill

The White House denied that President Trump's Thursday trip to Pennsylvania is for political purposes, hours after Trump tweeted that he's headed to the state "in order to" support the GOP candidate running in a special election there.

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued a Thursday morning statement pushing back at questions about the nature of the trip that were sparked by the president's tweet.

"The president is enthusiastic about today's trip to Pittsburgh, Penn., to discuss the incredible successes his tax plan is already achieving for the American people," she said.

"While the President has made clear his support for Republican candidates throughout the country, including in Pennsylvania, the purpose of today's visit is to promote the President's successful agenda especially on taxes," the statement said.

Well is he going to play fucking golf...................with a orange ball, so that he can see it in the snow, nope this asshole is going to make money off this trip.....................

"While taxpayers are on the hook to pay for official White House trips, political parties have to reimburse the White House for any campaign travel. That's easy when the president takes a trip solely to campaign—the party just reimburses the cost of the trip. But when the president mixes an official event with a political event, like a fundraiser, only the portion of the trip related to politics needs to be reimbursed.

That calculation is more difficult here, since there is no explicit campaign or political event. But while Trump's tweet appears to link the trip to political motivations, Sanders's statement suggests that the White House will not seek reimbursement for the trip."

Trump: 'Worst thing' about possible shutdown is effect on military

Source: The Hill

President Trump said Thursday the “worst thing” about a possible government shutdown would be its devastating effect on the U.S. military.

"If the country shuts down, which could very well be ... the worst thing is what happens to our military,” Trump told reporters outside the Pentagon, where he is meeting with military leaders.

The president reiterated his threat to blame Democrats for a shutdown, saying “it’s up to the Democrats” whether Congress is able to keep the government open. Republicans control the House and Senate.

Trump’s comments come just hours before the House is set to vote on a stopgap spending bill to avert a shutdown.

It’s unclear whether House Republican leaders have the votes to pass the plan, adding suspense ahead of the Friday midnight deadline.

Dingell to bring wife of deported Detroit man to Trump's first State of the Union

Source: The Hill

Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) announced on Thursday that she will bring the wife of Jorge Garcia, who was deported after 30 years in the U.S., to President Trump's State of the Union address at the end of the month.

"Jorge's wife Cindy has shown incredible resilience and courage in the face of these impossible circumstances. I am honored that she will join me at the State of the Union to be a voice for the hundreds of thousands of aspiring Americans who are part of the fabric of our communities, and who deserve a pathway to legal status in the country they call home," Dingell said in a statement.

"It is time for Congress and the President to find the political will to do what is right, not what is convenient, and fulfill this nation's promise to those who come here seeking a better life and those who call this nation home," she continued.
Garcia was deported to Mexico on Monday after spending 30 years in the U.S.

Ryan: Budget fights have pushed military 'past the breaking point'

Source: The Hill

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Thursday cautioned about the crumbling state of the U.S. military, warning that long-term budget cuts and Washington melodrama have pushed our military past the breaking point.

Instead of upgrading our hardware, we have let our equipment age. Instead of equipping our troops for tomorrows fight, we have let them become woefully under-equipped, Ryan told attendees at a Center for Strategic and International Studies event.

The Pentagon started 2018 on a continuing resolution (CR), the ninth year the Defense Department has begun its year on a stop-gap spending measure. A CR keeps the building open, but prevents new programs from starting and delays maintenance and training.

This has left the military too small, over-worked and with aircraft that cant fly, Ryan said.

WHIP COUNT: Senate vote on shutdown looks to be tight

Source: The Hill

It’s far from clear that a House GOP plan to fund the government can get through the Senate ahead of a possible shutdown on Saturday

Two GOP senators say they’ll vote no on the proposal, and the number of Democrats saying they’ll vote no has been rising by the hour.

Eighteen Democrats, including Independent Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), supported a stopgap measure in December, but many of those members say they’ll oppose the new stopgap, which would fund the government into February.

The main issue is the fact that the bill is silent on providing shelter to hundreds of thousands of young immigrants protected from deportation by an Obama-era program that President Trump is ending.

Trump administrations proposed labor rule would rob tipped workers of $5.8 billion per year

In December, the Department of Labor proposed a rule that would rescind portions of tip regulations, allowing employers who pay the minimum wage to take workers’ tips. According to Economic Policy Institute research, tipped workers would lose $5.8 billion a year in tips as a result of this rule. Women in tipped jobs would lose $4.6 billion annually.

Current regulations prohibit employers from taking tips. The department justifies the proposed rule by saying it is partly about fairness to “back of the house” workers, such as dishwashers and cooks, who don’t typically receive tips. The rule would theoretically allow employers to give some of the tips to back-of-the house workers. On the surface, the rule seems to address the great racial divide in high-end restaurant restaurants, in which white non-Latinx people tend to work in higher paying-positions as waiters and bartenders, and Latinx people tend to work in lower-paying jobs, such as line cooks and other back-of-house positions. The median hourly wage for restaurant waiters and waitresses is $9.61 and dishwashers’ median wage is $10, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

But employers are free to decide not to distribute those tips to those low-income workers, Heidi Shierholz, an economist at the Economic Policy Institute, told The Washington Post.

Trump administrations new religious freedom rule will encourage discrimination in health care

The Trump White House announced a new rule Thursday that overhauls the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Civil Rights (OCR) by refocusing its mission protecting the “religious freedom” of health care providers. The new “Conscience and Religious Freedom Division” (CRFD) will focus entirely on ensuring providers are allowed to opt out of providing care when they have objections, which has huge implications for patients’ access to abortion, LGBTQ people, and people living with HIV.

According to drafts released Thursday morning, the CRFD will be “responsible for OCR’s national conscience and religious freedom program, including enforcement of and compliance with laws protecting conscience and the free exercise of religion and prohibiting coercion and religious discrimination.”

The shift will represent the biggest backlash in the pingponging policies over the past few presidential administrations. President Bush had some conscience protections for health care workers, but the Obama administration reversed them, noting that they were being used to justify various forms of discrimination. As Politico notes, this included refusing to provide birth control, refusing treatment for HIV and AIDS, denying fertility treatment to lesbian couples, or not providing ambulance transportation for someone planning to seek an abortion.

Bracing for a Supreme Court attack, labor unions make plans to survive

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments next month in a case that could bring about what city and state worker unions fear most: the imposition of a “right-to-work” legal regime across the entire American public sector.

In the states where they exist, so-called right-to-work rules make it illegal for unions to require “agency fees” (payments that cover the expense of bargaining on behalf of non-union members) from the non-members covered by contracts they negotiate. To unions and their allies, the fees help prevent what they call a classic “free-rider problem,” in which people benefit from a costly system without any incentive to pay into it. Without agency fees, non-union members of unionized shops can still benefit from the higher wages and benefits guaranteed by collective bargaining contracts — but they’re not required to keep those efforts financially afloat.

Eliminating unions’ ability to collect those fees threatens to put a big dent in their financial resources — and ratchets up the incentive for workers to forego union membership. The creation of a nationwide right-to-work regime could deal a massive blow to public sector unionism, the last bastion of relative union power following years of defeats in the private sector.

Were terribly disappointed and hugely frustrated: Union chiefs say Trump made their lives worse

In April last year, President Trump stood alongside steelworkers and promised that his Commerce Department would open an investigation into whether imported steel posed a national security risk. The results of that investigation would likely have resulted in tariffs for countries like China.

Nearly 10 months later, the Commerce Department has finally wrapped its probe and sent its findings to President Trump. While the agency won’t disclose its findings, it says Trump has 90 days to “decide on any potential action.”

It may be too little too late for domestic steel workers who feel as though they were political pawns in Trump’s presidency.

“We’re terribly disappointed and hugely frustrated,” Leo Gerard, president of the United Steelworkers union, told CNN. “There’s been no action that has done anything to protect and defend American jobs. …In some cases we’re worse off now than we were then.”
