Newly Defanged, Top Consumer Protection Agency Drops Investigation of High-Cost Lender
In 2013, ProPublica published an investigation of the subprime lender World Finance. World was charging annual interest rates that could exceed 200 percent, often trapping customers in cycles of debt by enticing them to renew the loans over and over. In states where laws barred such high rates, the installment lender loaded many loans with nearly useless insurance products that bloated the cost. The company boasted over 800,000 customers, part of an installment loan industry that claimed to loan to millions.
The following year, World disclosed that it was under investigation by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The CFPB, the brainchild of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., was created by the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform bill, and under the leadership of Richard Cordray, the agency took action against credit card lenders, mortgage servicers, payday lenders and others for unfair practices against consumers.
But after Cordray left last November, President Donald Trump installed Office of Management and Budget head Mick Mulvaney as acting director. To say that Mulvaney has been a critic of the CFPB is a vast understatement. In a 2014 interview given when he was still a Republican congressman, Mulvaney said of the CFPB, “some of us would like to get rid of it” and called it “a joke ... in a sick, sad kind of way.”

Trump NLRB Appointee Finds a Way Around Conflict of Interest Rules
A Trump administration appointee to the National Labor Relations Board benefited the interests and clients of his former law firm when he cast the deciding vote to undo rules protecting workers’ rights in two cases last month.
The decisions, which were both resolved 3-to-2, are instances of what some former NLRB members describe as a side-door means of evading government ethics requirements — a way to do indirectly what conflict of interest rules prevent the appointee from doing directly.
William Emanuel, who joined the NLRB in September, has recused himself from involvement in more than four dozen cases involving the firm he left to join the labor board. That firm, Littler Mendelson, is known for representing corporations in labor disputes. Littler was not representing any parties in the disputes that Emanuel helped resolve in December.

WH releases photos of Trump working through shutdown
The White House on Saturday released photos of President Trump working on the first day of the government shutdown and the one-year anniversary of his inauguration.
One photo shows the president walking through a hallway wearing a white "Make America Great Again" hat, while another shows Trump sitting at his desk on the phone.
The third photo shows the president laughing with various members of his staff, including his daughter Ivanka Trump, adviser Jared Kushner, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, communications director Hope Hicks and legislative affairs director Marc Short.
The photos have sparked a reaction on social media.

Nerves fray as shutdown talks at impasse

Talks between Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) and congressional Republican leaders have broken down, raising anxieties among lawmakers on both sides of the aisle about finding a way to end the government shutdown.
Schumer had not spoken to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) or Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) as of 8 p.m. Saturday evening, the shutdowns first day.
Neither side showed any signs of backing down when the Senate adjourned Saturday evening without a deal in sight.
While both sides are furiously playing the blame game, McConnell thinks he has the upper hand and plans to raise pressure on Democrats by forcing votes on resolutions to reopen the government.

Shutdown fight turns ugly as both sides dig in

Republican and Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill lashed out at each other on Day One of the government shutdown Saturday, trading barbs and casting blame as a resolution to the funding impasse seemed nowhere in sight.
The rhetoric took a harsh turn, with Democrats complaining that President Trump is an erratic, unreliable negotiating partner and Republicans bemoaning Democrats’ intransigence over what the GOP sees as unreasonable immigration demands.
“Both sides are dug in. … I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re here tomorrow,” Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) told The Hill after huddling with fellow House Democrats in the basement of the Capitol.
Both chambers are in session Saturday — a rare weekend workday when many lawmakers were griping about risking vacation plans and overseas trips. But no votes are scheduled to reopen the government as the sides continue to air their grievances in press conferences and on cable news shows.

DNC targets GOP senators over shutdown in digital ad

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) on Saturday said it launched a digital advertisement effort against five Senate Republicans it argues caused the government shutdown.
The campaign targets GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Dean Heller (Nev.), Ted Cruz (Texas), Susan Collins (Maine) and Bob Corker (Tenn.). Both Heller and Cruz are up for re-election.
“Republicans failed to take care of veterans, provide children with long-term access to health care, fight the opioid crisis and protect Dreamers,” Sabrina Singh, the committee’s deputy communications director, said in a statement.

This impasse bodes poorly for American democracy
American democracy has always been a complex and complicated institution. Rarely has every American community seen the nation’s challenges through a single prism. Even more rarely have we all agreed on any given solution. But through the decades, and with rare exceptions, those representing us in Washington have found ways to work things out. They’ve collaborated and compromised, bantered and bartered. And it’s through those negotiations that the flame of American democracy has survived.
As illustrated by the current impasse over border security and immigration, that light has begun to flicker. Deep down, I have no doubt that Democrats and Republicans both want what’s best for America. It’s just that they’ve lost their ability to negotiate with one another. They’re so entrenched in their various positions—so convinced that their worldview should transcend everyone else’s—that they’re unwilling to meet anyone halfway. The result is a democratic unraveling.

After reading this opinion, I kept thinking of what the republicans did to The Constitution and what it says: that the president will advise and consent for nominations------------when that was thrown out the window----------------the republican party attacked the Constitution, they do not bode well for democracy
