538: Our Way-Too-Early 2020 Democratic Primary Draft

Our Way-Too-Early 2020 Democratic Primary Draft

In this week’s politics chat, we check in on the Democratic presidential field for 2020. The transcript below has been lightly edited.

micah (Micah Cohen, politics editor): Today’s chat is going to be a crazy one. It’s too early to make any bold claims about how the 2020 Democratic primary field is shaping up, but potential candidates are already making maybe-I’ll-run-for-president moves. So, it’s time for … 🎈FIVETHIRTYEIGHT’S 2020 DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY DRAFT!!!🎈

We’ll do six rounds. The goal is to pick the eventual 2020 Democratic nominee, but you also get points for having people on your team who do well but don’t win. (We’ll figure out how to judge this later/never.)

Nate has all our names in a hat and is having a neutral nonparticipant randomly pick the draft order …

Paul Ryan might leave Congress in 2018. Why do you suppose that is?

https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/12/14/paul-ryan-retire-speaker-ready-leave-washington-216103

Despite several landmark legislative wins this year, and a better-than-expected relationship with President Donald Trump, Ryan has made it known to some of his closest confidants that this will be his final term as speaker. He consults a small crew of family, friends and staff for career advice, and is always cautious not to telegraph his political maneuvers. But the expectation of his impending departure has escaped the hushed confines of Ryan’s inner circle and permeated the upper-most echelons of the GOP. In recent interviews with three dozen people who know the speaker—fellow lawmakers, congressional and administration aides, conservative intellectuals and Republican lobbyists—not a single person believed Ryan will stay in Congress past 2018.

If one of these women from the Senate would run for President in 2020, who'd have your primary vote?

We have 16 women Democrats in the Senate- obviously I couldn't fit them all on the list. Unlike some other parties I could talk about....

If you subscribe to Sirius XM, contact them now

http://ew.com/movies/2017/12/08/seth-rogen-cancels-sirius-interviews-steve-bannon/

Seth Rogen is taking a stance. On Friday, the comedian and actor announced he was cancelling a Sirius XM press tour that had been planned for next week, in protest of the radio network recently bringing back the right-wing provocateur as a regular host on its conservative Patriot Channel.

“I was supposed to do a press tour on @SiriusXM on Tuesday but I’m no longer doing it because I can’t bring myself to appear on the same service that has decided to support Steve Bannon,” Rogen tweeted. “Apologies to the shows I had to cancel. And f— Steve Bannon.”

My subscription is due for renewal soon; I just told them if they hire Bannon, I'm done.

Just me - they don't care, but if enough others do it - they'll think twice.

It's time to end the Olympics

The doping.
The absurd amount of money that is spent preparing the venues
The rotting of the venues after the games
The petty rivalries.
The constant worries over terrorism (and in the case of the upcoming games in South Korea, the constant worry about North Korea).

The corrupt IOC.
The Ryan Lochte story
The Tonya Harding story
Larry Nassar
Corrupt judging

I'm over it. Whatever is going to be spent to prepare LA, there have to be better ways to spend the money.
