The Stonehenge-like structure was built in 1980 and has come under fire for being Satanic. This NPR article touches on it

It also served as a sundial and astronomical calendar. But it was the panels' mention of eugenics, population control and global government that made them a target of far-right conspiracists

How do you allocate your political money?

This is a no-wrong-answer question. In general, if you have any disposable income to dedicate to politics, in general terms, how do you principally spend it?

Bad news tonight, but a glimmer of hope.

Mike Flood defeated Patty Pansing Brooks in the Special Election for NE 1 - the seat vacated after Jeff Fortenbury was forced to resign. But the margin in this traditionally safe R district was 52 - 48. We get to do this again in November. We need 3 points.

If abortion is going to be illegal, then dads need to pay

- If women are forced to carry unintended pregnancies to term, then we need laws putting dad (or dad's parents, if dad is a minor) on the hook for at least half of all expenses. Including, but not limited to: Prenatal. Delivery Expenses (including but not limited to: doctor, anesthesia, hospitalization, NICU, ambulance - you get the idea). Child Support. Secondary education funding. Medical and dental insurance.

- Neither Dad nor Dad Family get any say in Mom's choice of doctor or hospital.

- Financial responsibility does not entitle dad to visitation rights. That's a separate issue.

If you work for a company contemplating a move out of CA, IL, or NY

...think very carefully. No state income tax is nice and all, but red state America is looking to become more authoritarian than many third world dictatorships.

6 takeaways from primaries in California, Mississippi and other states

1. Voters in blue cities send a message on crime — again
It’s become apparent that voters even in blue cities are willing to punish Democrats who are perceived as too soft on crime. Tuesday resulted in some particularly pronounced examples of that trend.

In San Francisco, voters made the historic decision to recall District Attorney Chesa Boudin, who won office in 2019 while running on the idea of a less punitive criminal justice system, including ending cash bail and sending fewer people to prison. The latest results show voters recalling him by a strong margin, 60 percent to 40 percent, with an estimated 61 percent of votes counted.

In Los Angeles, Rick Caruso and Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), who was once considered a contender to be President Biden’s vice president, look to be headed for a runoff in the mayor’s race. But Caruso, a former longtime Republican who made fighting crime the centerpiece of his campaign, led Bass by 42 to 37 percent early on.

The results come after voters delivered similar verdicts in the 2021 elections. In Minneapolis, Buffalo, Seattle and on Long Island in New York, they voted against candidates and measures related to the “defund the police” movement and cash bail. But Boudin might now be the chief example, given his policies and San Francisco’s reputation as one of the most liberal cities in the country.

Repeal and replace the second amendment

We didn't do anything after Newtown, Columbine, Va. Tech, Parkland, Mandalay Bay, or countless other mass shootings. We won't do anything now.

The only way is to play a long game:repeal and replace the second amendment.

The second amendment gives the right to keep and bear arms but does so in the context of the need for a well-regulated militia. Somehow, "well-regulated" has been lost in translation.

The founding fathers considered enslaved Black people to be 3/5 of a person; did not grant suffrage to women; tolerated slavery; and thought that whoever came in second in the election should be Vice President. They made mistakes. They weren't perfect. The Constitution was not graven on stone tablets by the hand of God, nor was it ever designed to be a suicide pact. It needs to be changed.

Modifying the second amendment to regulate firearms sales and ownership makes sense in modern society. I would point to the Pro-Life/Pro-Forced Birth movement that has made itself a persistent, constant pain in the ass for 50 years. This issue can be won with the same level of commitment. It's a national security issue; a crime issue; a terrorism issue; a suicide issue; a domestic violence issue; an education issue. Mostly, it's a life issue. I've lost a family member and a coworker to gun violence. If America can tell a woman she's not free to use her uterus as she pleases, and America can tell us we can't say "gay", then America can damn well tell people they don't have the God-given right to blow children's heads off.

Thank you for reading this. Pray for our nation.

Fox News deals in Kremlin propaganda. So why not freeze Rupert Murdoch's assets?

The Guardian

If the west could find the courage, it would order an immediate freeze of Rupert Murdoch’s assets. His Fox News presenters and Russia’s propagandists are so intermeshed that separating the two is as impossible as unbaking a cake.

On Russian state news, as on Fox, bawling ideologues scream threats then whine about their victimhood as they incite anger and self-pity in equal measures. Its arguments range from the appropriation of anti-fascism by Greater Russian imperialists – the 40 countries supporting Ukraine were “today’s collective Hitler”, viewers were told last week – to the apocalyptic delirium of the boss of RT (Russia Today) Margarita Simonyan. Nuclear war is my “horror”, she shuddered, “but we will go to heaven, while they will simply croak”.

Russia would never give genuine western journalists airtime. But it can always find a slot for its favourite quisling: Fox News’s Tucker Carlson. He pushes out Russian propaganda lines or perhaps creates his own lies for Russia to use. Ukraine, not Russia, is the real tyranny. Nato provoked poor Vladimir Putin. The west is plotting to use biological weapons. Last week, he floated the theory that the war was not the result of an unprovoked invasion by a colonialist dictatorship but of the Biden administration’s desire to avenge Donald Trump’s victory in 2016.

It was a big hit in Moscow, reported BuzzFeed’s Julia Davis. “State TV propagandists loved it so much, Russia’s 60 Minutes included it not once, but twice in their evening broadcast – neatly bookended by the Kremlin’s war propaganda.”

How right-wing extremists weaponize the idea of motherhood

MSNBC

But above all, women have historically engaged in extremist movements through their domestic roles and identities as wives, daughters and mothers. They use these roles to support “backstage” activities — like sewing KKK hoods, cooking meals for gatherings and home-schooling children — but also to mobilize men as “protectors” of their purity and vulnerability in the face of a range of purported threats.

Motherhood plays an especially key role in the kinds of rhetorical strategies far-right extremists use, including the kinds of “utopian propaganda” that calls on followers to reject modernity and embrace “traditional values” and roles. But women aren’t called upon to be entirely passive as mothers, or to be relegated completely to domestic tasks. Rather, motherhood is used to justify women’s engagement in activism and to “depoliticize” their actions by positioning them as acting on behalf of their children and families.

Themes about the need to protect children are especially powerful in drawing women into extreme and even violent action, as illustrated by the rise of conspiracy theories and propaganda that mobilize mothers around themes of child exploitation and protection. Some women have been drawn into QAnon through relatively banal entry points like wellness blogs and yoga studios, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. In these spaces, healthy skepticism of traditional medicine and a propensity for alternative models of wellness can create inadvertent gateways to entire rabbit holes of conspiracy theories and disinformation, much of which calls on women to protect children.

Mom lifestyle influencers who have embraced the QAnon conspiracy have integrated posts about child trafficking into their regular content feeds with home decorating, cooking and child rearing tips, a challenge for parenting website editors, who have reported an uptick in conspiracy theory posts.
