NBC scores highest-rated Democratic debate since October (Hillary Group)

Good thing there was no competing football game, "Walking Dead," "Game of Thrones" or other Sunday night wasteland of viewership programming on.

You know, "that" meme.

Sunday night's NBC face-off between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders was the most-watched Democratic primary debate since October, according to preliminary Nielsen ratings.

The debate had a 7.2 household rating, meaning that 7.2% of American homes with TV sets were tuned in.

Actual viewership numbers for NBC's debate will be released later on Monday. Based on the 7.2 overnight rating, the debate likely averaged somewhere around 10 million viewers.

That's an improvement over the other two Democratic debates on broadcast networks this election season.

http://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/poll-clinton-holds-25-point-national-lead-over-sanders-n498071

Hillary Clinton leads rival Bernie Sanders by 25 points nationally ahead of Sunday's final Democratic debate and the all-important Iowa caucuses, according to the latest results from the new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

The debate will air on NBC at 9:00 pm ET.

Clinton is the first choice of 59 percent of Democratic primary voters, while Sanders gets the support of 34 percent. Martin O'Malley gets 2 percent.

The NBC/WSJ poll screens out Democratic and Republican voters who aren't expected to participate in the presidential primaries and caucuses.

The new poll also finds 79 percent of Democratic primary voters saying that they could see themselves supporting Clinton, versus 18 percent who couldn't (+61) — essentially unchanged from December's 82 percent-to-17 percent score (+65).

The poll numbers release Chuck Todd sat on earlier this week.

ABC News Analyst Stuns Twitter With Dismissive Hillary Clinton Tweet

From Blue Nation Review by John Paul Brammer

This just in: Being a woman is the only thing keeping Hillary Clinton in the presidential race, a stunning revelation considering that 44 of our previous 44 U.S. presidents have been male.

Or, at least, that’s according to ABC News political contributor Matthew Dowd on Twitter.

Peter Daou (our old friend from #HillaryMen) tweeted: "Always funny to see pundits mystified that Hillary Clinton isn't coasting. Like it's just that easy for a woman to become POTUS in the USA."

ABC news analyst Matthew Dowd tweets comment: "huh??? the only thing keeping her in this race is that she is a woman."

It’s unclear how being a woman is “keeping” Hillary Clinton in the race. She is currently the Democratic frontrunner. She’s not hanging in there by a thread. Such a blatant dismissal of Clinton’s legacy is disconcerting, to say the least. She served as Secretary of State and as a senator from New York. She is one of the most qualified individuals ever to seek the presidency. Since when is being a woman the only thing she’s running on, and since when is it the only thing Democrats are talking about?

Matthew Dowd again tweeted: "it is amazing Dems all talk about how Hillary being a woman is a liability, and i way it is huge asset, and i'm the sexist? lord have mercy"

For an ABC News political contributor (and former Bush-Cheney advisor) to show such a dismissive attitude toward a highly accomplished woman is unnerving, especially when he is called upon to comment on the 2016 race. And, though it’s clear Dowd would deny it, writing off a woman’s accomplishments simply because she is a woman is the definition of gender bias.

Another endorsement! (Hillary Group)

"When it comes to real national leadership on this issue there is so clearly one candidate that rises above all the others – Hillary Clinton. She fought alongside Brady when we passed the historic, lifesaving Brady Bill – Bernie Sanders voted against it. Hillary is the only Democratic candidate running for President who voted against the truly evil Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), the gun lobby-backed bill that gives the gun industry special protection from liability that no other industry enjoys. One of the ugliest pieces of special interest legislation in the last 20 years Bernie Sanders had a chance to vote against it, but he actually voted to help pass PLCAA.

Hillary Clinton is the only candidate who, as a member of Congress and national leader, has consistently put the safety of the American public ahead of the interests of the corporate gun lobby. If you truly want to see, finally, the historic change on this issue that we all want and deserve, there is clearly one candidate who deserves your vote – and that candidate is Hillary Clinton! The Brady Campaign endorses Hillary Clinton for President, now you can too. Sign onto our endorsement today!"

Here's what the President said about guns:

"In Dr. King’s words, we need to feel the 'fierce urgency of now.' Because people are dying. And the constant excuses for inaction no longer do, no longer suffice. That’s why we’re here today. Not to debate the last mass shooting, but to do something to try to prevent the next one.

How did we get here? How did we get to the place where people think requiring a comprehensive background check means taking away people’s guns? Each time this comes up, we are fed the excuse that commonsense reforms like background checks might not have stopped the last massacre, or the one before that, or the one before that, so why bother trying. I reject that thinking.

So let me outline what we're going to be doing. Number one, anybody in the business of selling firearms must get a license and conduct background checks, or be subject to criminal prosecutions … We’re also expanding background checks to cover violent criminals who try to buy some of the most dangerous firearms by hiding behind trusts and corporations and various cutouts … And these steps will actually lead to a smoother process for law-abiding gun owners, a smoother process for responsible gun dealers, a stronger process for protecting the public from dangerous people.

All of us should be able to work together to find a balance that declares the rest of our rights are also important -- Second Amendment rights are important, but there are other rights that we care about as well. And we have to be able to balance them. Because our right to worship freely and safely -- that right was denied to Christians in Charleston, South Carolina. And that was denied Jews in Kansas City. And that was denied Muslims in Chapel Hill, and Sikhs in Oak Creek. They had rights, too.

Our right to peaceful assembly -- that right was robbed from moviegoers in Aurora and Lafayette. Our unalienable right to life, and liberty, and the pursuit of happiness -- those rights were stripped from college students in Blacksburg and Santa Barbara, and from high schoolers at Columbine, and from first-graders in Newtown. First-graders. And from every family who never imagined that their loved one would be taken from our lives by a bullet from a gun."
