Hillary and Veterans - Factsheet (Hillary Group)

When It Comes to Veterans, Check the Record

Hillary Clinton has fought throughout her career to ensure that all veterans have access to the opportunities and tools they need to succeed upon returning home:

Increased assistance for families caring for veterans. Hillary introduced the Heroes at Home Act of 2006, and fought to establish new services for military members and veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuries. She successfully amended the 2007 Defense Appropriations Act to establish a traumatic brain injury family caregiver training curriculum for DOD and VA hospitals, and she championed efforts to make it easier for military family members to provide care for their loved ones.

Expanded health care coverage for Reservists and National Guard members. Hillary worked across the aisle with Senator Lindsey Graham to expand veterans’ access to military health insurance, ensuring that all members of the Reserves and National Guard—and their families—had access to military health benefits even when they’re not deployed.

Protected family members caring for wounded warriors. Hillary collaborated closely with Senator Chris Dodd to author and introduce new legislation that aimed to broaden protections afforded by the Family and Medical Leave Act to the family members of wounded service members. She is proud that the legislation was enacted as part of the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act.

Supported survivors of fallen service members. Working with Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Hillary introduced legislation to expand benefits afforded to surviving spouses. She joined with Republican Senator Chuck Hagel to introduce a bill to increase the gratuity paid to family members of fallen veterans from $12,000 to $100,000, a proposal that was enacted as part of the 2005 supplemental appropriations act. Hillary also served as an honorary board member for the non-profit Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, which provides resources and support to family members of those who have died in military service.

Joined efforts to build veterans rehabilitation center. Hillary joined with Republican Senator John McCain to personally raise money for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Their efforts were critical to building the Center for the Intrepid, a new $50 million state-of-the-art physical rehabilitation facility in San Antonio, Texas, designed specifically to help seriously wounded service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Was one of the first to recognize Gulf War Syndrome and fought to ensure Gulf War Veterans got the treatment they needed. She met with sick veterans and researched Gulf War Syndrome before President Clinton announced the formation of a committee to study the issue and was the point person for the administration on the issue.

Wanna Fight Back Against the War on Women?

The application of a law which targets and can only target just women harkens back to the worst failings of equal protection under the law which was addressed in the 14th Amendment.

Trust Alabama to step on that amendment!

Thousands support online petition against Alabama chemical endangerment law

Source: al.com, by Amy Yurkanin

An investigative report by Al.com and ProPublica, a non-profit investigative journalism organization, has inspired the creation of an online petition that has received more than 11,000 signatures.

........

Alabama's law against chemical endangerment passed in 2006 as a way to prosecute adults who expose children to harmful chemicals from home-based meth labs.

Soon after, prosecutors began applying the law to women who use drugs during pregnancy. The Alabama Supreme Court upheld the use of the law against pregnant women in 2013 and 2014.

Reporters from Al.com and ProPublica examined thousands of cases of chemical endangerment and identified 479 pregnant women and new mothers prosecuted under the law.

Women have been arrested even when their babies were born healthy. The law does not prevent prosecutors from using it against women with legally prescribed drugs. The drug most likely to trigger prosecution was marijuana, according to the research.

"Alabama's chemical endangerment statute has become less about protecting children from home meth labs, and more about attacking women," according to Kohlmoos' petition.

League of Conservation Voters Action Fund to endorse Clinton

"The stakes are so high."

The League of Conservation Voters Action Fund on Monday intends to endorse Hillary Rodham Clinton, the first time in three decades it has endorsed a presidential candidate before a single primary vote has been cast.

The decision to back Clinton over two Democratic rivals with equally strong, if not stronger, liberal environmental records shows the extent to which some environmentalists are concerned the Obama administration’s policies could be rolled back under a Republican president. The group’s president, Gene Karpinski, said it needs to activate volunteers and donors early to make sure Clinton is strongly positioned for the general election.

The LCV Action Fund picked Clinton over Sen. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) and former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley because “the stakes are so high” and Clinton “has proved she’s an effective leader who can stand up to the big polluters and push forward an aggressive plan to tackle climate change,” Karpinski said.

"Hard truths..." (Hillary Group)

Hillary, Bernie, Gender and Race: Hard Truths about Bias Among White Male Progressives

From #HillaryMen by Peter Daou and Tom Watson

In recent weeks, the Democratic nomination battle has veered into sensitive territory: race and gender. Bernie Sanders supporters are falsely accusing Hillary of “playing the gender card” and of unfairly calling out the racially-charged urban/rural distinction on guns.

We are long-time Bernie admirers and certainly do not believe he is sexist or racist. Neither does Hillary Clinton. Contrary to the media’s attempts to stoke Democratic conflict and despite the protestations of some of Bernie’s supporters, Hillary is not accusing him of being sexist or racist. She is doing something much more targeted and much more significant: pointing out unspoken and uncomfortable blind spots among white males on the left.

Emily Crockett explains:

What Clinton was pointing out was a subtler, more pervasive kind of discrimination — and the disbelieving response of both the Sanders campaign and the media shows why she was right to bring it up.

Clinton made a spot-on point about how women are perceived. She didn't say or imply that Bernie intentionally slighted her based on her gender. She did imply that her gender made him see her differently, and that many women have this same experience all the time. That idea should be a lot less controversial than it often turns out to be.

There's a reason so many women instantly identified with her remark. It's because across the board, people tend to mentally turn up the volume when women speak — and research proves it.

As white male progressives, we welcome Hillary’s willingness to confront a problem on our side. Insensitivity on race and gender is cultural and it isn’t isolated to the right. After all, the early history of the liberal blogosphere and the netroots, of which we are original members, is one dominated by white males. Exclusion and invisible bias exist everywhere.

Each Chapter Summary helps explain content of chapter (duh ).

Helpful if some outrageous claim catches your eye, and gets you wondering if President Obama really is an oligarchical corporate tool in league with Satan to end life and freedom as we know it, and really does stand against "truth, justice and the American Way!"

What does remain true?

"Reading is fundamental."
