yallerdawg's JournalMelissa Harris-Perry: since when has racism or sexism disqualified an American president?
I can't imagine why MSNBC silenced THIS voice?Source: Vox, by Emily Crockett
*****
I am not even vaguely surprised by the idea that sexual assault would not be a disqualifier for the American presidency, Harris-Perry said during a panel discussion. She was responding to a question from the Atlantics Peter Beinart about why Trumps infamous grab em by the pussy Access Hollywood tape didnt seem to affect the outcome of the election.
In fact I was mostly irritated every time people would say, 'Oh God, we can't have a racist be the American president.' Because I kept wondering, 'Since when? Harris-Perry continued, to laughter in the crowd. In fact, for most of American history, racism has been a prerequisite to win the American presidency. One had to actually demonstrate one's racism in order to become the American president. And the same was certainly true of sexism, and even of sexual assault.
*****
Another way to look at the idea that racism and sexism are a prerequisite for the presidency is to acknowledge how difficult it can be to run an explicitly anti-racist or anti-sexist campaign. Hillary Clinton spent a lot of time doing that on the 2016 campaign trail, and it may have cost her among some white voters.
*****
As I explained in November, this is one reason why so many people (especially women) voted for Trump despite his boorish public behavior toward women, and despite the assault allegations against him. They not only didnt expect anything different, they even saw his boorishness as a sort of asset. A strong (male) leader, the thinking goes, may not be polite, but hell beat up the bad guys for you and a bad boy streak just comes with that territory.
As Harris-Perry put it, all of this means that 2016 was a more normal election cycle than you might otherwise have expected.

Where is Fox Business 'Risk and Rewards' Dierdre Bolton?
In light of all the sexual harassment charges, defections/firings/settlements, and other strange goings-on at Fox networks, Ms. Bolton 'disappeared' from her show and all (my) net searches 3 months ago.
I have never seen a public figure disappear like this.
Everyday, the substitute on 'Risk and Reward' announces "...in for Dierdre Bolton" - but never a word about where she is or what she may be doing?
Strange.
Rex Tillersons stocks shot up $9 million after he was tapped as Trump secretary of state
President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, has deep conflicts that are hostile to America's interests, which do not stop with his ties to the Russian government: He also possesses an ExxonMobil nest egg worth hundreds of millions of dollars.Source: Shareblue, by Tommy Christopher
President-elect Donald Trumps pick to lead the State Department already faces stiff opposition over his relationship with Russia, including a $500 billion deal with Russian government-owned Rosneft. Beyond that, though, ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson also faces conflicts surrounding his stock holdings and pension plan that look to be nearly impossible to untangle.
Tillerson currently holds 2,618,856 shares of ExxonMobil stock, a portfolio worth $233,078,184.00 as of the Friday before Tillersons selection was reported. By closing time the following Monday, they had shot up more than $5 million to $238,289,707.44, and gained another $4.1 million by the end of the day when his selection was officially announced.
In addition to the stocks, Tillerson has an ExxonMobil pension worth nearly $70 million.
*****
As Forbes notes, if Tillerson sells only the shares he actually owns, he will head the State Department while knowing that a hundred million dollars or so of ExxonMobil stock await him down the road a consideration that could potentially influence an unimaginable number of State Department decisions and policies, as energy resources figure prominently in U.S. foreign policy.

Obama signs medical cures bill into law
One last dance...Source: The Hill, by Peter Sullivan
President Obama on Tuesday signed a sweeping medical cures bill into law, capping more than a year of bipartisan negotiations.
The 21st Century Cures Act seeks to speed up the approval of new drugs and invests new money in medical research.
The measure grew to include a slew of bipartisan priorities, including $1 billion over two years to fight the epidemic of opioid addiction and $1.8 billion for Vice President Bidens cancer moonshot initiative. A long-awaited mental health bill was also included in the package.
The bill passed both houses of Congress on overwhelming bipartisan votes, an unusual development on healthcare as lawmakers gear up for a partisan fight over ObamaCare in the new year.

Why leaving Alabama for FAU is the best thing for Lane Kiffin
http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/lane-kiffin-alabama-nick-saban-fau-florida-atlantic-owls-oakland-raiders-usc-tenneessee-121216Lane Kiffin, formerly the head coach of the Oakland Raiders, Tennessee Vols and USC Trojans, currently the renowned offensive coordinator of the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, has found himself a new job. He's taking over the Owls.
No, not the recent AAC champion Temple Owls.
The FAU Owls. Of Conference USA.
Hey, you've got to start somewhere. Unfortunately for Kiffin, he started his head coaching career about four levels higher than he was qualified for at the time and failed spectacularly. So now, 10 years later, he's starting over.
And don't forget this guy!
Trump Goes Into Hiding And Cancels Press Conference As Russia Investigation Gains Momentum
President-elect Donald Trump has canceled his first press conference since winning the election as calls grow for a bipartisan investigation into whether or not the Russian government interfered in the 2016 contest.Source: PoliticusUSA, by Jason Easley

The cabinet appointments are a flimsy excuse to cover-up the fact that his advisors dont want Trump to take questions from reporters before the Electoral College votes next week. Trump is the first president-elect since 1976 not to hold a press conference. Trump last held a press conference on July 27, 2016, which was the same event where he called on Russia to hack Hillary Clinton and release her emails.
Trump tried to cancel on The New York Times after they held him to his agreed to on the record session. Trump has avoided taking any questions from the political press in a news conference setting for nearly seven months.
It is not a surprise that Trump would cancel the press conference that was scheduled so that he could announce how he will be separating himself from his business interests as president. The Trump team cant risk putting him in front a live mic to take questions from reporters about the investigation into Russias meddling in the election.
By laying low, Trump is hoping to not give Electoral College electors any more reason to break away and reject him.
Donald Trump has been in hiding from the press since July, and with a scandal breathing down his neck, the always available Trump has gone invisible.

Reid blames Comey for Hillary Clinton's loss
Source: The Hill, by Rebecca Savransky
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday blamed FBI Director James Comey for Hillary Clinton's loss in the presidential election.
"Comey helped [President-elect Donald] Trump significantly," Reid said in an interview with CNN.
"A week before the election, he came out with this, 'Oh, we found some more emails,' and, as a result of that, we lost Senate seats, and, I think, we lost the presidency."
When asked if Comey "singlehandedly" swayed the election, Reid said Clinton "would have won" had Comey not "written that letter" shortly before Election Day.
"We would have picked up at least two more Senate seats," he added.
