Betsy DeVos proposes rules that would cut student loan relief by an estimated $13 billion

Students who are defrauded by their schools would have a harder time getting their federal loans erased under new rules proposed by the Trump administration Wednesday.

The proposal, which aims to replace a set of Obama-era rules that were never implemented, drew applause from the for-profit industry but sharp criticism from advocacy groups that represent student borrowers.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said the proposal lays out clear rules schools must follow to avoid trouble, while also protecting students harmed by deception.

“Our commitment and our focus has been and remains on protecting students from fraud,” DeVos said.

Under the proposal, students would be eligible for loan relief if they can prove their schools knowingly misled them with statements or actions that directly led them to take out loans or enroll at the school.

That would be a higher bar than the borrower defense rules finalized under Obama in 2016 after the collapse of two for-profit schools, Corinthian Colleges and ITT Technical Institute. Those rules allowed relief in a wider range of cases dealing with breach of contract.

Education Department documents supporting DeVos' proposal argue that while students should be protected from fraud, they also have an obligation to do research before picking schools.

We've got Chris Cuomo, son of former NYS Governor, Mario Cuomo and brother of current NYS Governor, Andrew Cuomo. Mika Brzezinski, daughter of former Secretary of Defense, Zbigniew Brzezinski. Maria Shriver, daughter of Sargent Shriver. Cokie Roberts, daughter of Hale Boggs. Meghan McCain, daughter of John McCain. And last but not least, Abby Huntsman, daughter of Russian Stooge and allegedly "sane" (like Susan Collins is supposedly "moderate&quot Jon Huntsman Jr.

Personally, this bugs shit out of me regardless of their political stances. This nepotism shit is out of hand.

Dick Cheney Signs a Waterboarding Kit in a New Promo for Sacha Baron Cohen's Showtime Show

Well, in case you were wondering if Sacha Baron Cohen’s still got it, the comedian’s new Trump-skewering Showtime series, which appears to be titled Who Is America?, just dropped a new promo in which his (still as-yet unseen) journalist character asks former vice-president Dick Cheney to sign a waterboarding kit, which Cheney does with a smile. Now why, in this year of our Lord, in this time in American politics, after more than two decades of faux political comedy shows humiliating their interviewees, would Dick Cheney agree to jokingly sign a waterboard kit in front of a television camera? The answer would seem to be Cohen’s unflagging ability as an interviewer. That, and the fact Dick Cheney has continued to be a vocal proponent of waterboarding, so why not have some goof-around fun with it? Wa wa wee wa, indeed. According to the show’s extremely vague previously released promo, Who Is America? seems to be dropping on July 15.
