tenderfoot's JournalBullying Continues After 13-Year-Old Attempts Suicide, Is Put On Life Support
Beyond heartbreaking
LOMA LINDA, Calif. (CBSLA) A Yucaipa family is living a parents worst nightmare having to say a final good-bye to their own child.
Charlene and Freddie Avila couldnt hold back the tears as they talked about their 13-year-old daughter Rosalie outside the hospital where she was on life support Sunday night.
<snip>
A journal left behind by the eight-grader, who dreamed of being a lawyer one day, documented some of the bullying she experienced at her Calimesa school.
They told me I was ugly today,' her father Freddie recalled reading. They were making fun of me today about my teeth.'
<snip>
They received a message on social media with photos of Rosalie saying, Hey mom. Next time dont tuck me in this, referencing a bed. Below that, it says, Tuck me in THIS, an arrow pointing to an open grave.

Rosalie Avilas parents said they received this on social media after her daughter tried to commit suicide.
Addressing those faceless persons responsible for the post, Charlene said, For you to do that, I mean, youre heartless. Youre a very heartless person, and you have no compassion.
The parents have turned Rosalies journal over to the police, and they want the school district to do something about the bullying, saying enough wasnt done to prevent this tragedy.

Charlottesville investigation finds the police grossly mishandled the white supremacist event...
that ended in a murder - and that the police chief tried to obstruct the investigation:
CHARLOTTESVILLE A police officer radioed for help as angry protesters swarmed around her: They are pushing the crowd my way and I have nobody here to help me.
Tammy Shiflett, who had just returned to active duty as an elementary school resource officer after two months recovering from a shoulder surgery, was the only person assigned to block traffic at the intersection where a deadly car attack began in Charlottesville on Aug. 12.
Instead of sending reinforcements, a superior instructed her to abandon her post and move the car that had been positioned in the intersection, leaving a wooden sawhorse as the only barrier keeping vehicles out of the area. Roughly an hour and a half later, a white nationalist drove his car down that very street, striking a crowd of counterprotesters and killing 32-year-old activist Heather Heyer.
<snip>
The review, led by Tim Heaphy, a former federal prosecutor who now works for Hunton & Williams, also found:
Despite repeated public statements by state and local officials that officers were not instructed to stand down, police had in fact been instructed only to intervene in conflicts between white nationalists and counterprotesters in the event of serious injury.
A Virginia State Police commander made an off-plan decision to keep state officers behind barricades instead of sending them into the streets to break up fights and make arrests.
After clashes began, Police Chief Al Thomas was heard by several people in the command center saying to let them fight, it will make it easier to declare an unlawful assembly and shut down the rally.
Thomas attempted to obstruct the citys investigation, deleting relevant text messages, attempting to hide his use of a personal email account to conduct some official police business, and creating planning checklists that were not actually used to plan for the rallies.
The 220-page document is based on hundreds of thousands of documents, video and audio recordings, photos and interviews. It represents the most comprehensive account yet of how public officials handled the Unite the Right rally.

Senate Ethics Committee opens probe of Senator Franken
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate Ethics Committee said on Thursday it has opened a preliminary inquiry into alleged misconduct by Senator Al Franken, who has been accused of sexual misconduct and inappropriately touching women.
Franken, a Democrat, said this week he was embarrassed and ashamed by his behavior but would not resign. He said he would cooperate with an Ethics Committee investigation.
While the committee does not generally comment on pending matters or matters that may come before it, in this instance, the committee is publicly confirming that it has opened a preliminary inquiry into Senator Frankens alleged misconduct, the committee said in a statement.
Asked for comment, a spokesperson for Franken said the senator was committed to cooperating fully with the ethics investigation.

Gowdy, Benghazi panel settled wrongful firing suit with $150,000 in public funds
As chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) used $150,000 in taxpayer dollars to settle with a former aide who alleged he was fired in part because he was not willing to focus his investigative work on Hillary Clinton.
The Post confirmed the confidential settlement reached between Gowdy and the Benghazi panel and Bradley Podliska after it appeared in a list of settlements released Friday by the congressional Office of Compliance. Gowdy is now the chairman of the House Oversight Committee.
In a list provided to the House Committee on Administration, the OOC disclosed it oversaw one $150,000 settlement involving a claim of veteran status discrimination and retaliation in the last five years. Podliska, in addition to claiming he was fired for his refusal to focus on Clinton, alleged retaliation by his supervisors because he took leave to fulfill his obligations as an Air Force reservist. His December 2016 settlement was reported by The Washington Post, though the settlement amount was not disclosed at the time.

I can confirm that my client is one person who brought a veterans status discrimination and retaliation suit against Congress and that the case settled on terms that were satisfactory to my client, said Romer-Friedman, a civil rights attorney at Outten & Golden.
Requests for comment from Gowdys personal office and the House Oversight Committee were not immediately returned.

GOP Rep. Blake Farenthold lawmaker behind $84K sexual harassment settlement
Rep. Blake Farenthold used taxpayer money to settle a sexual harassment claim brought by his former spokesman the only known sitting member of Congress to have used a little-known congressional account to pay an accuser, sources told POLITICO.
Lauren Greene, the Texas Republicans former communications director, sued her boss in December 2014 over allegations of gender discrimination, sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment.
Greene claimed in the lawsuit that another Farenthold aide told her the lawmaker had sexual fantasies and wet dreams about Greene. She also claimed that Farenthold regularly drank to excess and told her in February 2014 that he was estranged from his wife and had not had sex with her in years.
<snip>
Greene had worked for Farenthold for 18 months. According to Greene's complaint in court, Farenthold and his top aide, Bob Haueter, sexually harassed her, allegations that both men vehemently denied.
Farenthold regularly drank to excess, and because of his tendency to flirt, the staffers who accompanied him to Capitol Hill functions would joke that they had to be on red head patrol to keep him out of trouble, Greenes complaint alleged. On one occasion, prior to February 2014, during a staff meeting at which [Greene] was in attendance, Farenthold disclosed that a female lobbyist had propositioned him for a threesome.
The complaint added: On June 10, 2014, in response to Haueters complaint about [Greenes] shirt which Haueter claimed was transparent and showed [Greenes] nipples, Farenthold told [another woman staffer] that [Greene] could show her nipples whenever she wanted to, Greenes complaint asserted.
Greene said Farenthold avoided meeting one-on-one with her, and she also felt awkward about meeting with Farenthold.
When Greene complained to Farenthold directly in June 2014 about her problems with Haueter, she was marginalized and undermined by the Texas Republican, and then fired several weeks later, Greene asserted.
