Alec Baldwin to host a 10 p.m. Friday show on MSNBC

Alec Baldwin may soon be joining MSNBC to host a new primetime show, according to a report from Mediaite.

An anonymous cable news industry source told the media news site that the show is slated to air at 10 p.m. on Fridays. A name for the show has not yet been chosen, according to Mediaite, though their source tells them that the show is essentially "a done deal" at this point.

Rumors swirled in 2011 that Baldwin would be replacing Keith Olbermann after the "Countdown" host's departure from MSNBC, but they turned out to be unfounded.

Greenwald making plans to return to the U.S., turns down "protection" offer from Brazilian govt.

A Brazilian official has taken the unusual step of publicly announcing that the Brazilian government will offer Guardian writer Glenn Greenwald protection from the U.S. government after determining he risks facing legal action if he returns to the U.S.

To receive protection from Brazil, Greenwald would have to officially request it. But though he takes the risk of prosecution seriously, Greenwald tells me he has no intention of taking the Brazilian government up on the offer — and that he plans to return to the U.S. sooner than later, come what may.

“I haven’t requested any protection from the Brazilian government or any other government because, rather obviously, I’ve committed no crime – unless investigative journalism is now a felony in the U.S.,” Greenwald said via email. “But the fact that Brazilian authorities believe there is a real possibility that the U.S. would unjustly prosecute journalists for the “crime” of reporting what the U.S. government is doing is a powerful indictment of the U.S.’s current image in the world – just as was the requirement that the U.S. promise it will not torture or kill Snowden if he’s returned. It’s an equally potent reflection of the massive gap in opinion between the U.S. Government and the rest of the world when it comes to how the NSA disclosures, my reporting, and Snowden are perceived.”

U.S. reports malaria vaccine breakthrough

Source: CNN

U.S. researchers say they've successfully tested a vaccine for malaria on a small group of volunteers and hope to conduct large-scale tests soon.

The vaccine involves multiple, intravenous injections of a weakened form of the disease, scientists from the National Institutes of Health, the Navy, Army and other organizations reported Thursday. Though the results were promising, more extensive field testing will be required, the researchers wrote.

The mosquito-borne tropical disease kills about 1 million people a year and sickens more than 200 million. There is no current vaccine.

Rockne Newell has been identified as the rampage shooter in Pennsylvania

Rockne Newell, a self-proclaimed junk collector in Ross Township, was identified as the gunman in the deadly shooting at a township municipal meeting last night.

State police at Lehighton sought a search warrant from a district judge to search Newell's property.

According to previous reports, Newell got a building permit from the township to have a storage structure on the property, but then built a dwelling without first getting a zoning permit or certificate of occupancy from the township.

Over the years, authorities have responded to Newell's property as a result of neighbor complaints and on one occasion in 2009 found human fecal matter in buckets there, according to previous reports in the Pocono Record.

Ex-GOP Leader Who Made Fun of Weiner Arrested for Sexting a Minor

A former GOP leader who cracked wise about Anthony Weiner's sexting woes has found himself embroiled in a seedier version of the scandal after being arrested last Friday for allegedly sending sexually explicit material to a teenager over the Internet.

Following a joint investigation of the Los Angeles Police Department's Internet Crimes Against Children unit and its Mission Divison, former Los Angeles County GOP executive director Scott Hounsell, 30, was taken into custody and booked on a charge of sending harmful matter to a child — a misdemeanor.

"During the investigation involving a 16-year-old victim, she identified the suspect Scott Hounsell as a person who engaged her with sexually explicit chats via a social media site," Officer Bruce Borihanh told LA Weekly.

Amazon's Jeff Bezos has purchased the Washington Post for $250 million

Bezos, in an interview, called The Post “an important institution” and expressed optimism about its future. “I don’t want to imply that I have a worked-out plan,” he said. “This will be uncharted terrain and it will require experimentation.”

He said, “There would be change with or without new ownership. But the key thing I hope people will take away from this is that the values of The Post do not need changing. The duty of the paper is to the readers, not the owners.”

Despite the end of the Graham family’s control of the newspaper after 80 years, Graham and Bezos said management and operations of the newspaper would continue without disruption after the sale.

Post publisher Katharine Weymouth—Graham’s niece and the fourth generation of her family involved in the newspaper—will remain as publisher and chief executive of the Bezos-owned Post; executive editor Martin Baron will continue in his job. No layoffs are contemplated as a result of the transaction among the paper’s 2,000 employees, who will be told of the sale at a company-wide meeting Monday afternoon.
