NRA endorses Democrat for Missouri governor

Source: Politico

The National Rifle Association's political arm on Tuesday endorsed Missouri Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chris Koster over his Republican rival Eric Greitens, touting the current state attorney general's "proven record in fighting to preserve the Second Amendment."

“Chris Koster has never wavered from his Second Amendment beliefs. For over 17 years, he has fought to preserve the constitutional rights of law-abiding Missourians,” NRA-Political Victory Fund chairman Chris W. Cox, said in a statement. “The NRA is proud to endorse Chris Koster and we urge Missouri’s gun owners and sportsmen to get out this November and vote to elect a governor with a proven record of fighting to preserve the Second Amendment.”

The NRA-PVF passed over Greitens, a Navy veteran and former SEAL who won a closely contested Republican primary in the state and ran an ad depicting him firing a machine gun while declaring that he would "take dead aim at politics as usual."

Most humpback whales to be taken off federal endangered species list

Source: The Guardian

Federal authorities are taking most humpback whales off the endangered species list, saying they have recovered enough in the last 40 years to warrant being removed.

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) said on Monday that nine of the 14 distinct populations of humpbacks would be removed, while four distinct populations remain listed as endangered and one as threatened.

Last year the NMFS, an office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa), proposed that humpbacks be split into 14 population segments, allowing for 10 populations to be removed from the endangered list.

It said populations of the animals had steadily grown since the international community banned commercial whaling nearly 50 years ago.

Cal State LA offers segregated housing for black students

Source: The College Fix

California State University Los Angeles recently rolled out segregated housing for black students.

The arrangement comes roughly nine months after the university’s Black Student Union issued a set of demands in response to what its members contend are frequent “racist attacks” on campus, such as “racially insensitive remarks” and “microaggressions” by professors and students. One demand was for a “CSLA housing space delegated for Black students.”

“[It] would provide a cheaper alternative housing solution for Black students. This space would also serve as a safe space for Black CSLA students to congregate, connect, and learn from each other,” the demand letter stated.

The newly debuted Halisi Scholars Black Living-Learning Community “focuses on academic excellence and learning experiences that are inclusive and non-discriminatory,” Cal State LA spokesman Robert Lopez told The College Fix via email.

Air Force investing $12B in F-15s

Source: CNN

A $12 billion makeover is underway for the US Air Force's 1980's-era F-15 fighter, a step towards upgrading an air fleet that one military official recently called the "smallest, oldest and least ready" in history.

The F-15 has long been hailed as the most successful dog-fighting aircraft in US history, boasting an undefeated air-to-air combat record with more than 100 aerial combat victories, according to Boeing, the plane's primary contractor and developer.

The Air Force initially planned to replace the entire F-15 fleet with the fifth-generation F-22 Raptor, but production of the stealthy aircraft was halted in 2009 and only 188 of the 749 F-22s purchased by the Pentagon were ever produced.

With rival nations like China and Russia quickly closing the technology gap that has allowed the US to rule the skies for decades and fewer F-22s than expected at its disposal, the Air Force has decided to invest in a major facelift for the battle-tested F-15 to help fill the void by extending its lifespan through 2040.

Brock Turner expected to be released from Santa Clara County Jail Friday

Source: SF Gate

Brock Turner, the former Stanford University student and swimmer convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious and intoxicated woman in 2015, is expected to be released from the Santa Clara County Jail this Friday, September 2, after serving only half of his six-month sentence.

As the Associated Press reported in June, early releases are common for good behavior.

Back in January 2015, Turner was detained for the campus assault after two graduate students saw Turner and a woman behind a garbage bin. When the 19-year-old Turner tried to flee, the two students caught him and held him down until the police arrived and made the arrest. Turner was later charged and found guilty of three felony counts of sexual assault.

Stanford bans hard alcohol at campus parties

Source: CNN

Stanford's undergraduate students will no longer be allowed to drink hard alcohol at on-campus parties, the university announced Monday.

The university's students can still drink beer and wine at such events, but will no longer be permitted to have hard alcohol that has more than 20% alcohol by volume or 40 proof. The new policy also limits the size of the bottles of hard liquor they're allowed to keep in their dorms or common areas to under 750 milliliters.

"Our focus is on the high risk of the rapid consumption of hard alcohol," said Ralph Castro, director of the Office of Alcohol Policy and Education, in a Stanford news release. "Our intention is not a total prohibition of a substance, but rather a targeted approach that limits high-risk behavior."

The new alcohol policy comes two months after the sentencing of Brock Turner, a former Stanford swimmer who was convicted on a charge of intent to commit rape. The case gained national attention after the victim issued a powerful statement. The judge's subsequent decision to give Turner a six-month jail sentence for sexually assaulting the unconscious woman also caused a national uproar.

I'm of mixed feelings about this. Alcohol isn't going away, and a students reaction when they do finally consume high proof alcohol could be worse.

Rio Olympics Today: The First Gold Medal Goes to ..American Shooter Virginia Thrasher

Source: NY Times

We already have a gold medalist, and it’s a 19-year-old West Virginia University sophomore, Virginia Thrasher.

With two shots to go in the women’s air rifle event, Thrasher, who is known as Ginny, led by 0.7 points. She coolly squeezed off shots of 10.5 and 10.4 to take gold. Two Chinese shooters, Du Li and favored Yi Siling won silver and bronze. Another American, Sarah Scherer was eighth.

Thrasher has only been shooting for five years, after she asked her father to take her deer hunting. She was N.C.A.A. champion as a freshman and surprisingly qualified for the U.S. team at the Olympic Trials. “For me, it has been a whirlwind of a summer,” she said. She will also compete in the 50-meter rifle, three positions, next Saturday, then head back to W.V.U.

Video of Palestinian father taunting Israeli police to shoot his young son just got worse

A Palestinian father, in front of a professional Palestinian videographer, pushed his young child towards Israeli Border Police, yelled at the son to throw rocks (which he did in a childish way), and then taunted the police to shoot the child so that the cameras could capture the killing.

As if that weren’t bad enough, Palestinian television then promoted the video, but left out a crucial piece where the border policeman and the child exchange a “high five” — which is contrary to the image promoted of a hostile interaction between the police and the child. It was a moment in which the father’s attempt to taunt the police into harming the child was met with humanity.

Obama Shares Best Advice He Received From George W. Bush

Source: TPM

President Obama shared Sunday two pieces of advice that he appreciated from former President George W. Bush.

Obama said on CBS News' "Face the Nation" that Bush gave him two good pieces of advice. He at first complimented the former Republican president and said he was "a really good man" despite their political differences.

He said that Bush's family had also been "terrific" to his family.

"The first piece of advice was, "Trust yourself. And know that ultimately regardless of the day-to-day news cycles and the noise that the American people need their president to succeed, regardless of political party." Which I thought was very generous of him," Obama said. "The second piece of advice is, "Always use Purell hand sanitizer. Because if you don't, you're going to get a lot of colds because you shake a lot hands."

Pretty funny actually. I wonder if Purell could use that in an ad at some point in the future.
