Obama Shares Best Advice He Received From George W. Bush

Source: TPM

President Obama shared Sunday two pieces of advice that he appreciated from former President George W. Bush.

Obama said on CBS News' "Face the Nation" that Bush gave him two good pieces of advice. He at first complimented the former Republican president and said he was "a really good man" despite their political differences.

He said that Bush's family had also been "terrific" to his family.

"The first piece of advice was, "Trust yourself. And know that ultimately regardless of the day-to-day news cycles and the noise that the American people need their president to succeed, regardless of political party." Which I thought was very generous of him," Obama said. "The second piece of advice is, "Always use Purell hand sanitizer. Because if you don't, you're going to get a lot of colds because you shake a lot hands."

Pretty funny actually. I wonder if Purell could use that in an ad at some point in the future.

Poll: Rubio widens lead in U.S. Senate race

Source: Politico

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio is widening his lead over the two major Florida Democrats who seek to unseat him, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll.

Rubio leads U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy by 50-37 percent — a 6-point shift in the Republican incumbent’s favor since Quinnipiac’s last poll of Florida voters in June. And Rubio leads U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson by 50-38 percent, a 4-point shift since last month.

The poll indicates voters don’t mind that Rubio broke his pledge to not run for his Senate seat if he lost his bid for the White House this year.

“Democrats made fun of Sen. Marco Rubio when he opted for a last-minute re-election bid in Florida, but he may be on the way to a last laugh, having quickly opened double digit leads over both Democratic challengers,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

4 Children Fatally Stabbed in Memphis; Mother in Custody

Source: ABC News

Officials say four young children in suburban Memphis have been fatally stabbed and their mother has been taken into custody.

Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham told reporters deputies were called to an apartment complex in the county shortly before 1 p.m. Friday.

Oldham said they are working to notify the next of kin and won't release names before that.

Officials have not released the ages of the children, but sheriff's office spokesman Earle Farrell said deputies responding to the scene called them "babies."

Teen who urged suicide via text will stand trial, court rules

Source: CBS News

A teenage Massachusetts girl who sent her boyfriend dozens of text messages encouraging him to take his own life and who allegedly told him to "get back in" a truck filled with carbon monoxide fumes must stand trial for involuntary manslaughter, the state's highest court ruled Friday.

The Supreme Judicial Court ruled Friday that a grand jury had probable cause to indict Michelle Carter, then 17, in the 2014 death of Conrad Roy III, 18.

Carter's lawyer had argued that her texts were free speech protected by the First Amendment and did not cause Roy to kill himself.

But the court, in a strongly worded decision, said the grand jury heard evidence suggesting that Carter engaged in a "systematic campaign of coercion" that targeted Roy's insecurities and that her instruction to "get back in" his truck in the final moments of his life was a "direct, causal link" to his death.
