4 Children Fatally Stabbed in Memphis; Mother in Custody

Source: ABC News

Officials say four young children in suburban Memphis have been fatally stabbed and their mother has been taken into custody.

Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham told reporters deputies were called to an apartment complex in the county shortly before 1 p.m. Friday.

Oldham said they are working to notify the next of kin and won't release names before that.

Officials have not released the ages of the children, but sheriff's office spokesman Earle Farrell said deputies responding to the scene called them "babies."

Teen who urged suicide via text will stand trial, court rules

Source: CBS News

A teenage Massachusetts girl who sent her boyfriend dozens of text messages encouraging him to take his own life and who allegedly told him to "get back in" a truck filled with carbon monoxide fumes must stand trial for involuntary manslaughter, the state's highest court ruled Friday.

The Supreme Judicial Court ruled Friday that a grand jury had probable cause to indict Michelle Carter, then 17, in the 2014 death of Conrad Roy III, 18.

Carter's lawyer had argued that her texts were free speech protected by the First Amendment and did not cause Roy to kill himself.

But the court, in a strongly worded decision, said the grand jury heard evidence suggesting that Carter engaged in a "systematic campaign of coercion" that targeted Roy's insecurities and that her instruction to "get back in" his truck in the final moments of his life was a "direct, causal link" to his death.

Hawaii Becomes First State to Put Gun Owners in FBI Database

Source: Time

Hawaii passed a law making it the first state to put gun owners on a federal criminal record database and monitor them.

Hawaii Governor David Ige signed the bill Thursday, which allows police to enroll firearms applicants and individuals who are registering their firearms into “Rap Back,” a Federal Bureau of Investigation database that monitors criminal activities by people under investigation or in positions of trust, Reuters reported.

The law takes effect immediately. “Rap Back” allows Hawaii police to be notified when a Hawaii firearm owner is arrested anywhere in the U.S. In addition, the law allows Hawaii police to evaluate whether a firearm owner should continue owning a gun after being arrested.

Supreme Court Says Police May Use Evidence Found After Illegal Stops

Source: New York Times

The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that evidence found by police officers after illegal stops may be used in court if the officers conducted their searches after learning that the defendants had outstanding arrest warrants.

Justice Clarence Thomas, writing for the majority in the 5-to-3 decision, said such searches do not violate the Fourth Amendment when the warrant is valid and unconnected to the conduct that prompted the stop.

Justice Thomas’s opinion drew a fiery dissent from Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who said that “it is no secret that people of color are disproportionate victims of this type of scrutiny.”

“This case tells everyone, white and black, guilty and innocent, that an officer can verify your legal status at any time,” she wrote. “It says that your body is subject to invasion while courts excuse the violation of your rights. It implies that you are not a citizen of a democracy but the subject of a carceral state, just waiting to be cataloged.”

Wall Street donors seek to block Warren VP pick

Source: Politico

Big Wall Street donors have a message for Hillary Clinton: Keep Elizabeth Warren off the ticket or risk losing millions of dollars in contributions.

In a dozen interviews, major Democratic donors in the financial services industry said they saw little chance that Clinton would pick the liberal firebrand as her vice presidential nominee. These donors despise Warren’s attacks on the financial industry. But they also think her selection would be damaging to the economy. And they warned that if Clinton surprises them and taps Warren, big donations from the industry could vanish.

“If Clinton picked Warren, her whole base on Wall Street would leave her,” said one top Democratic donor who has helped raise millions for Clinton. “They would literally just say, ‘We have no qualms with you moving left, we understand all the things you’ve had to do because of Bernie Sanders, but if you are going there with Warren, we just can’t trust you, you’ve killed it.’”

Most big donors don’t want Warren on the ticket because she is the most accomplished anti-Wall Street populist in the Democratic Party. But many also think her presence would drive a potential Clinton administration too far to the left, poison relations with the private sector from the start and ultimately be damaging to the economy

Orlando Gunman Omar Mateen Twice Took Law Enforcement Test

Source: NBC News

The gunman who killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando Sunday had twice taken a test used to possibly become a Florida law enforcement officer, and passed on the second attempt.

Omar Mateen failed in his first attempt at the law enforcement Basic Abilities Test on June 24, 2011, according to Florida Department of Law Enforcement records.

Mateen retook the test in 2014 and passed, making him eligible to enter a law enforcement academy, and possibly later become a police officer in Florida.

Although Mateen failed the law enforcement test in 2011, the failing score was later changed to a passing one following changes to the test made by the Department of Justice and retroactive re-scoring, according to the records.

Freddie Gray trial: expert witness crumbles in van driver's prosecution

Source: The Guardian

Prosecutors seeking murder charges over Freddie Gray’s death rested their case against Caesar Goodson on Wednesday with an expert witness who crumbled under cross-examination. His testimony was the latest of several blows in the trial that experts say is prosecutors’ best shot at getting a conviction for Gray’s death.

Witness Stanford O’Neill Franklin, a former police commander, was called to support the prosecution’s theory that Gray suffered what is known as a “rough ride”, a practice in which a driver jolts and takes sharp turns, jostling a prisoner who is handcuffed and shackled without a seatbelt.

But when asked by defense attorney Matthew Fraling whether he saw any evidence of Goodson’s erratic driving, he couldn’t say.

Asked if, in reviewing footage of the van’s stops, he saw evidence of unexpected starts, stops, or turns, Franklin answered: “I did not.”

Craigslist ad threatens Orlando-style massacre in San Diego

Source: ABC News - San Diego

Police are investigating an online threat of violence to San Diego's LGBT community that read: "You're next."

On Tuesday evening, a 10News viewer saw the post in the men-seeking-men section of the Craigslist San Diego personal ads. He took a screenshot and sent it to 10News before the post was flagged and removed.

The post is titled "We need more Orlando's (sic)," and it is accompanied by a photo of a hand firing a revolver with a bullet coming out of the barrel.

The post read: "Orlando was long overdue. Cleanse your community of the filth that gives decent gay men and women a bad name. Those people were walking diseases, bug chasers, and thank god for AIDS and 9-11 and now Orlando. San Diego you are next …"

State expert: Unclear whether Freddie Gray had ‘rough ride’ in police van

Source: Washington Post

The state’s expert on police policy and practices testified that he could not say definitively that Freddie Gray got a “rough ride” the day he suffered a fatal spinal injury in the back of a van on the way to jail.

Former Baltimore City police commander Stanford Franklin struggled to clearly define “rough ride” during his two hours on the stand Wednesday and said most of his expertise on the matter is rooted in anecdotal stories he heard from citizens during his time in law enforcement.

Franklin’s testimony came shortly before prosecutors rested their case on the fifth day of proceedings in the trial of Officer Caesar Goodson Jr., the only one of six officers in the Gray case to face a murder charge.

Prosecutors are attempting to convince a judge that Goodson is responsible for Gray’s death by failing to put Gray in a seat belt and ignoring his requests to go to a hospital. They say Gray got a “rough ride,” bouncing around in the back of the van with his hands and feet shackled, as Goodson drove recklessly.

The prosecution of Caesar Goodsen in the Freddie Gray case is going down in flames.

In addition to this abject and complete failure of their own witness to confirm the "rough ride' theory, their medical examiner has pretty well been impeached. The defense is sure to call witnesses who heard her say (and recorded in their notes) that Freddie Gray's injuries were an accident, after swearing in open court that she never said such a thing. Without her testimony that Freddie Gray's injuries happened before stop 5, rather than after stop 5, the state has no case (which was pretty tenuous even before the Defense begins to impeach her).

Southern Baptists condemn display of Confederate flag

Source: AJC

Calling on people to stop displaying the Confederate battle flag, the Southern Baptist Convention today offered some of the strongest criticism yet of the banner by a major conservative religious group.

The group overwhelmingly approved a resolution at its annual conference saying that the flag is perceived by many as a symbol of “hatred, bigotry and racism” and asking people to take it down.

“We call on our brothers and sisters in Christ to discontinue the display of the Confederate battle flag as a sign of solidarity of the whole body of Christ, including our African American brothers and sisters,” the resolution said.
