Grab bars, definitely in shower/tub area. Also next to commode/toilet if possible.

Placement of toilet grab bars depends on the wall configuration of bathroom, i.e., they need enough wall space forward to the side of the toilet for them to be effective. This worked in one of my bathrooms; in the other there was not enough wall space to put one in.

Toilet grab bars are usually put in on an angle, not straight up and down or horizontal.

Are you currently using a walking aid - cane, walker, or other?

I believe I avoided falls up to now by preemptively using a cane, specifically a Hurrycane. I used a regular cane for a while, but found that the single tip would sometimes slip out of place with weight placed on it.

I'm 11 years older than you and also live alone.
I dislike the idea of wearing something around my neck all the time, and am still using a flip phone, so not Alexis and others at this time.
Maybe someday, I'll move up in technology, but at this time I conside it a burdem.

Take care!

I attended Jimmy Carter's Sunday School class about 20 years ago;

it's one of those precious events you treasure in your heart.
Jimmy and Rosalyn are so gracious to all their guests.
Wasn't that kind of Jimmy to invite Mayor Pete to participate in the reading?

I'm sure Mayor Pete benefitted personally from being in Jimmy's class.

Those who are not aware of their impending death may believe they have time

to accomplish the writing of a will. Some others, unlike the man in the news story, believe their assets are not enough to bother with.

Nonvoters are more like the second type. Although the voting date is set, nonvoters believe their vote will not make a difference.

I did Recovery International 50 years ago, when I was young like you.

Very good philosophy and good support for any age.
I second the recommend.

The telemarketers are not disappearing fast enough for me.

Dang phone calls at 8:10a. m., when I'm planning to sleep another 2+ hours.
Dang phone calls calling me from the bathroom to hear a lot of nonsense.

I finally bought a set of phones that display call # & place calling from.
Dang phone calls list places that are not valid locations.
Dang phone calls imitate phone numbers I have legitimally received.

New phones have a blocking mechanism, which I've been using liberally lately.
I don't know if I'm blocking any legitimate calls, and don't know how to unblock them if I am.

Dang telemarketers.....

I fell tonight for the first time. I had taken a certain pride in that I had never fallen,

despite my many years. It was a relatively soft, rolling fall, in my den, on a carpet. I was trying to catch a small spider in my grabber to deposit it outside, so I was leaning over part-way.
I frequently use a Hurrycane, especially when walking outside or in unfamiliar spaces, as my balance is not so hot.
I am not hurt, though imagine I may have some sore muscles overnight and perhaps in the next day or two.

The real problem was getting myself up. Two artificial knees have kept me from kneeling for 15 years. My two local adult children would be asleep, plus I can't remember my daughter's cell number. I left a message on her land line, which she never answers. Calling the fire department was an option, but I really didn't want a huge fire truck coming unless the situation was dire.

After about a half hour of trying, I was able to hoist myself onto my knees, pull my upper body onto a sofa seat, straighten my legs enough to land on the sofa seat, and twist myself into a seated position, exhausted and huffing from the effort.

I consider myself very fortunate. So many, including friends and my own husband, have suffered irreparable damage from falls. This may be a warning to me to consider the future and to know that I may not be so lucky in time and place if a fall occurs again.

Thanks for sharing information and glimpses of Orthodoxy.

Your OPs are both enlightening and edifying, and you and Shenmue are revealed as good followers of the Lord.

Beautiful Way of the Cross from Rome, broadcast live

on EWTN this evening. It was outdoors, moving towards the Coliseum. Pope Francis was at the last station. Very moving.

I don't watch EWTN much, but every so often I go by there and find a good movie on a particular saint. St Bernadette, for example.

We Democrats are blessed with so many really good candidates.

Though I don't see all of them as President within the next 2-6 years, I do many as great candidates for vice President or strong Cabinet members, leading our country back to a forward-looking course.

I plan to remain undecided for many months, but do admit that I, a senior citizen, prefer someone younger than 50; even under 60 is pretty good. The vibrancy of a younger candidate cannot be touched by the current executive.
