I am reminded of the movie "Life is Beautiful", where the father protects his son

from the knowledge of the horror of the prison camp.
The father was lovingly present to his son, therefore the son had a measure of protection from the evil that was going on around him.

Perhaps you can plan day trips for hubby and yourself, to the bucolic areas

of New England.
So much to see and do in New England and change of scenery now and again may lift spirits all around. (Get help for assisting hubby as needed, family or otherwise.)
Maybe niece will send occasional photos of family enjoying the lake and grounds.

When I hear that a child just barely one was taken, as well as other toddlers,

I am reminded that children that age may still be nursing mother's milk; they either crawl or are just learning to walk, and are surely not toilet-trained.
Picture in your mind the infant children of Romania and some other Eastern European countries who were without human interaction and nurturing.

I believe I read that refugee children may be cared for on military bases.
How in h--- is that going to work out?
