If not Heaven and not Hell...

Where do we go?
Not that I am a true believer, I lost that years ago.

Middle ground is limbo.

Any ideas?

Has this ever happened to you? No? Then I am glad.

Violence against Women most often Starts at Home.

As a young child, did you ever sit down to dinner, while your mom and dad were in the middle of a very loud argument. Did you ever sit there and watch your dad backhand your mom so hard that blood spattered across the table. Did you ever stand around the bathroom, with your mom sitting on the toilet seat, and hand her tissues to stop the blood flow. Did you stand there and cry. No? Then I am glad. My sister and brother and I, it happened to us.

That is the only time that I saw my dad hit my mom. However the fights and verbal abuse were the same as a physical blow. It can crush you. They stayed together for 25 years...for the children. I wish they had not.

The ironic part in all this, I had a similar marriage. Most of it was verbal abuse. He made me feel worthless, that I was nothing. I knew that I was not. It was short lived. I left, with scars on my soul from my marriage and my upbringing.

I have never talked about this, not to anyone, ever. I hinted about it. That was it. So you might ask yourself, why now. I started to post something a few times.I wanted to make a point. It was hard.

However after posting thread after thread on VAWA, and watching other similar posts sink and die with so little notice. I felt like someone, that had the air sucked out their body. I wept each time they died unnoticed.

I have said before, that there is not one single person here on DU that does not have at least one Woman in their life. Someone that they care about, someone they want to protect. We can only protect them if we stand for all Women.

It's Time!

That's it! I have had about all I can take, of the utter stupidity and sanctimonious bullshit ,that the right continues to force upon us. The GOP are rapists. They are enablers of the rapist's. They are trying to force another bill on women,The Sanctity of Human Life Act, championed none other than Paul Ryan.

They are forcefully raping us of our rights as women. They are forcefully raping us, with their out dated ideology. They want to give a fertilized egg more rights than they would give a living, breathing woman!

Why do they hate us so! Why?

They violate our rights, as living breathing Human Beings, with these cold blooded malicious attacks. They violated us again when they denied passage of VAWA. I want to weep, when I hear this cold blooded, closed minded ideology of the right.

They have no compassion...their souls are dead.

March, is Women's History Month! It's time to make a stand.

History just seems to keep repeating itself!

The Women's Movement - Our History

"If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, together women ought to be able to turn it right side up again." - Sojourner Truth

A brief history of the women's movement.

"Purple is to lavender as woman is to feminist" - Alice Walker

Organized feminism did not really kick off until the first Women's Conference hed in Seneca Falls, America, in 1848. To begin with, the Women's Movement evolved out of social reform groups such as the Abolition of Slavery, the Social Purity and Temperance movements. Women began to realize that in order to transform society they would need their own organizations to do so. They campaigned upon a whole range of issues; from guardianship of infants, property rights, divorce, access to higher education and the medical professions, to equal pay and protective legislation for women workers - many of which women are still campaigning for today!

The Suffragettes

Increasingly, women recognized that campaigning was limited whilst women could not make their voices heard directly. The vote took 70 years to gain. It was not until 1928 that all women - not just those over 30 and of the right property qualifications - could legally vote. Despite arguments that women should accept merely local suffrage, or universal male suffrage, or limited suffrage, the suffragettes persevered. The rise of the Militant suffragettes and the contribution of a mass of women workers during war time pressurized the Government to grant limited suffrage. Now it is debatable as to how much impact the vote has actually had in campaigning for women's rights. But it was a CRUCIAL LANDMARK IN OUR HISTORY.

1940s and 1950s

The war had challenged stereotypes in the workplace and so women began to enter the employment market in much larger numbers. It soon became apparent that some of the burden of family responsibility needed to be shifted onto the state. Together with the trade unions, the women's movement fought hard for a welfare state system which would provide this and act as a safety net for society's most vulnerable. This is perhaps one of the GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE CENTURY.

WWOB (what would Obama do?)

I really like Smartpants' take on things. She puts it succinctly. Her message is always thoughtful. As is our Presidents.

As folks freak out over the looming deadline of the so-called "fiscal cliff," I keep thinking about what Michelle Obama said about how her husband handles these kinds of situations.

Here's the thing about my husband: even in the toughest moments, when it seems like all is lost, Barack Obama never loses sight of the end goal. He never lets himself get distracted by the chatter and the noise, even if it comes from some of his best supporters. He just keeps moving forward.

And in those moments when we're all sweating it, when we're worried that the bill won't pass or the negotiation will fall through, Barack always reminds me that we're playing a long game here. He reminds me that change is slow — it doesn't happen overnight.

If we keep showing up, if we keep fighting the good fight and doing what we know is right, then eventually we will get there.

We always have.
I need to soak that one up a little more thoroughly. I offer it to you as well.

Mele Kalikimaka Mr. President!

Its been a tough week for all of us - no one more so than our President. As I've watched him battle the tears over the loss of our babies only to have to switch gears to take on the lunatic fringe in Congress, I've been spending some time thinking about how grateful I am that he is willing to represent us by taking this all on. I can't imagine another human being I'd rather have in the White House at this moment in history.

SNIP:

SNIP:

Oh, and one more thing...

I'd like to once again repeat something Alice Walkerhttp://immasmartypants.blogspot.com/2010/11/it-is-soul-that-must-be-preserved.html wrote to President Obama shortly after he was elected.

I would advise you to remember that you did not create the disaster that the world is experiencing, and you alone are not responsible for bringing the world back to balance. A primary responsibility that you do have, however, is to cultivate happiness in your own life. To make a schedule that permits sufficient time of rest and play with your gorgeous wife and lovely daughters. And so on. One gathers that your family is large. We are used to seeing men in the White House soon become juiceless and as white-haired as the building; we notice their wives and children looking strained and stressed. They soon have smiles so lacking in joy that they remind us of scissors. This is no way to lead. Nor does your family deserve this fate. One way of thinking about all this is: It is so bad now that there is no excuse not to relax. From your happy, relaxed state, you can model real success, which is all that so many people in the world really want. They may buy endless cars and houses and furs and gobble up all the attention and space they can manage, or barely manage, but this is because it is not yet clear to them that success is truly an inside job. That it is within the reach of almost everyone...

Because, finally, it is the soul that must be preserved, if one is to remain a credible leader. All else might be lost; but when the soul dies, the connection to earth, to peoples, to animals, to rivers, to mountain ranges, purple and majestic, also dies. And your smile, with which we watch you do gracious battle with unjust characterizations, distortions and lies, is that expression of healthy self-worth, spirit and soul, that, kept happy and free and relaxed, can find an answering smile in all of us, lighting our way, and brightening the world.
