A brief history of Gov. Rick Scott doing jack shit about Florida gun violence

https://twitter.com/OrlandoWeekly/status/964666019007619072

In the past seven years under his reign as governor of Florida, Scott has actually loosened commonsense regulations on gun laws, and has done absolutely nothing to curb gun violence, except for, of course, offer his "thoughts and prayers."

To illustrate this point, here's a handy list of Scott's efforts to do as little as possible about gun violence, and reading it consecutively is sobering.

2011: Rick Scott signed preemption legislation, prohibiting localities from regulating firearms and ammunition. Cities and counties were forced to allow guns in parks, hospitals, and government buildings as a result. [Tampa Bay Times, 8/19/11]

2011: Rick Scott signed a controversial “docs versus glocks” bills, which punished doctors who asked patients about gun ownership. Pediatricians feared the safety repercussions of the legislation.

New York City road sign made to read 'F--k Trump'

A light-up road sign near New York City was rearranged this week to read "F--k Trump."

The sign was sitting at the foot of the Pulaski Bridge in Brooklyn, N.Y., and had previously warned vehicles and pedestrians about bridge closures, according to The New York Post.

But individuals began posting pictures of the sign's new message on Wednesday night. The Gothamist reported that a Department of Transportation employee began shutting down the sign the next morning

Celebrity chef Tom Colicchio's New York home is vandalized with hate speech and pro-Trump political scrawl after he put up Democrat signage

The 'Top Chef' host found the graffiti outside the home he shares with his wife Lori Silverbush and their two sons in Long Island, New York on Tuesday.

Colicchio said he found his wife's name, a cross and a defaced Jewish star outside his property. They also found 'TRUMP' written in red paint on the mailbox, as well as 'Cuomo=Death to America' with a hammer and sickle painted on the street and grass. The words 'Cynthia Nixon' and 'Go Home' were also painted in white.

Colicchio said he believes the incident was in response to him putting up a sign supporting Perry Gershon, the Democrat who is running for Congress against Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin.

Dem senator: Russians have 'penetrated' some Florida election systems

Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) on Wednesday said Russian hackers had successfully "penetrated" some of Florida's election systems ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.

"They have already penetrated certain counties in the state and they now have free rein to move about," Nelson told the Tampa Bay Times.

Nelson said leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee encouraged him fellow Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R) to notify Florida state election supervisors that "the Russians are in their records," according to the report.

Nelson told the news outlet that the state has to act quickly, emphasizing that Russia is trying to undermine faith in the U.S. democratic system. The specifics of the activity remain unclear, including which counties were targeted and why it is believed to be the work of Russians.

Some good news for Ferguson, MO in last nights election results

Wesley Bell won!

?itok=ZZWbpj2I

A councilman from Ferguson, Mo. defeated St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch during Tuesday's Democratic primary, according to The Associated Press.

The AP reported that Wesley Bell topped McCulloch by a 57 to 43 percent margin, marking an end to McCulloch's seven-term career as a prosecutor.

The news service notes that McCulloch gained national attention four years ago for his handling of the investigation into the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson.
No Republicans are on the ballot in the race for St. Louis County prosecutor, meaning Bell is set to take the position after the November election.

Anybody else sick of these articles? "White, and in the minority"

She speaks English. Her co-workers don’t. Inside a rural chicken plant, whites struggle to fit in.

In a country where whites will lose majority status in about a quarter-century, and where research suggests that demographic anxiety is contributing to many of the social fissures polarizing the United States, from immigration policy to welfare reform to the election of President Trump, the story of the coming decades will be, to some degree, the story of how white people adapt to a changing country. It will be the story of people like Heaven Engle and Venson Heim, both of whom were beginning careers on the bottom rung of an industry remade by Latinos, whose population growth is fueling that of America, and were now, in unusually intense circumstances, coming to understand what it means to be outnumbered.

They didn’t know the heavy burden of discrimination familiar to members of historically oppressed minority groups, including biased policing and unequal access to jobs and housing. But some of the everyday experiences that have long challenged millions of black, Latino and immigrant Americans — the struggle to understand and be understood, feeling unseen, fear of rapid judgments — were beginning to challenge them, too.

Studies have shown how some whites, who are dying faster than they’re being born in 26 states, react when they become aware of a tectonic demographic shift that will, with little historic precedent, reconfigure the racial and ethnic geography of an entire country. They swing to the right, either becoming conservative for the first time, or increasingly conservative — “politically activated,” explained Ryan Enos, a political scientist at Harvard University, who among others found that white Democrats voted for Trump in higher numbers in places where the Latino population had recently grown the most.

They feel threatened, even if not directly affected by the change, and adopt positions targeting minorities out of “fears of what America will look like,” said Rachel Wetts of the University of California at Berkeley, who argued in one study that recent calls by whites to cut welfare were born of racial resentment inflamed by demographic anxiety, even though whites benefit from the social safety net as well.

If I worked in a plant where everybody else spoke Spanish, I'd learn Spanish. There are free courses available online. Problem solved.
