(CN) – As Minneapolis underwent a fourth night of protests over the death of George Floyd, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said Saturday that most rioters arrested are from outside of the city and sought to take advantage of the chaos.

In a press conference held in the early hours of Saturday morning, Gov. Walz said he is authorizing “full mobilization” of the state’s National Guard, adding 1,000 National Guard to join the 700 already there, calling it “an action that has never been taken in the 164 year history of the Minnesota National Guard.”

“Our goal is to decimate that force as quickly as possible,” Walz said of rioters who looted and burned buildings. “Our cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are under assault.”

Later in the day, Walz said 2,500 guardsmen and women would be activated. He said about 80% of those arrested for looting and vandalism could be outside agitators.

“Our great cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are under assault by people who do not share our values, who do not value life and the work that went into this and are certainly not here to honor George Floyd,” Walz said. “They need to see today that that line will stop and order needs to be restored.”...........................................

Trump privately scolded, warned by allies

Source: axios

Over the past couple of days, numerous advisers both inside and outside the White House have urged the president to tone down his violent rhetoric, which many worry could escalate racial tensions and hurt him politically.

Behind the scenes: The biggest source of internal concern was Trump's escalatory tweet, "when the looting starts, the shooting starts." Some advisers said it could damage him severely with independent voters and suburban women.

................

...............
Some of Trump's most trusted aides, including Hope Hicks, expressed concern about a tweet he sent shortly before 1am Friday, in which he used a violent phrase with a racist history rooting back to police brutality against African Americans in the 1960s: "When the looting starts, the shooting starts."

A number of people outside the White House weighed in over the course of the day. On Friday morning, Facebook raised concerns to the White House about Trump's incendiary message and urged them to make a change even if it did not violate Facebook's policies, according to a source familiar with the outreach.

One adviser said they saw it as the president's worst moment since Charlottesville........................

Pelosi ignores Trump's protest tweets, says she won't 'take his bait'

The House speaker said Trump is fueling discord with his social media posts.

May 31, 2020, 11:38 AM

'To take (Trump's) bait time and time again is just a gift to him': Nancy PelosiABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos interviews Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on "This Week."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said she is not paying attention to President Donald Trump's inflammatory tweets about protests in the wake of George Floyd's death in police custody, suggesting that the president is contributing to the discord and creating a distraction with his social media posts.

"I kind of ignore what President Trump says," Pelosi told ABC News' Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos on "This Week." ......................

When asked whether the arrest of a single officer for third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter is sufficient for justice to be served in response to Floyd's death, Pelosi said she has concerns about whether the charges are severe enough.

"I said right from the start that it was murder. We saw an execution of a person on TV," she said. ....................................

Retail giant Target announced late Saturday that it will close 175 stores across the U.S. to keep employees safe during unrest over the death of George Floyd. Most of the stores are in the Minneapolis area, but other stores listed are in Illinois and California. “We are heartbroken by the death of George Floyd and the pain it is causing communities across the country,” Target Corporate said in a statement. “At this time, we have made the decision to close a number of our stores. We anticipate most stores will be closed temporarily.” Employees will be paid for up to 14 days of scheduled hours and will be offered positions at nearby stores.

'No Blame?' ABC News finds 54 cases invoking 'Trump' in connection with violence, threats, alleged

Trump is as guilty as sin.

'No Blame?' ABC News finds 54 cases invoking 'Trump' in connection with violence, threats, alleged assaults.

President Donald Trump insists he deserves no blame for divisions in America.

Mike Levine May 30, 2020, 7:20 AM

36 cases invoke 'Trump' in connection to violenceA nationwide review conducted by ABC News has identified at least 36 criminal cases where Trump was invoked in direct connection with violent acts, threats of violence or allegations of assault.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly distanced himself from acts of violence in communities across America, dismissing critics who point to his rhetoric as a potential source of inspiration or comfort for anyone acting on even long-held beliefs of bigotry and hate.

"I think my rhetoric brings people together," he said last year, four days after a 21-year-old allegedly posted an anti-immigrant screed online and then allegedly opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 and injuring dozens of others.

But a nationwide review conducted by ABC News has identified at least 54 criminal cases where Trump was invoked in direct connection with violent acts, threats of violence or allegations of assault.

After a Latino gas station attendant in Gainesville, Florida, was suddenly punched in the head by a white man, the victim could be heard on surveillance camera recounting the attacker’s own words: “He said, ‘This is for Trump.'" Charges were filed but the victim stopped pursuing them.

Merkel Declines to Die for Trump [Update*2: Trump Postpones G7 to At Least September]

Those leaders have been onto Trump for a long time!!

"European G7 leaders are concerned that Trump may simply want to use their visit for an election-year photo op, and as a basis for declaring the world is getting back to work — thanks to him"

Merkel Declines to Die for Trump [Update*2: Trump Postpones G7 to At Least September]

Friday May 29, 2020 · 9:08 PM CDT

A little over a week ago, Trump announced he wanted to have the G7 leaders meet in person in July. (The United States is this year’s host.) First it was going to be at Camp David, which is bad enough as a pandemic breeding ground, but then he changed to the White House, which is an even tighter space. I posted a diary back then, Is Trump Trying to Kill the G7 Leaders, with a poll where the choices were “Sure, we’ll die for your ego” or “Shove it (insert more diplomatic language).” 98% of you picked the latter.

Well, it turns out the 98% were right. Merkel rebuffs Trump invitation to G7 summit. (What, you were expecting anything else?)

BERLIN — Angela Merkel has rebuffed Donald Trump’s invitation to attend a G7 summit, which the U.S. president is keen to portray as a symbol of a return to normality from the upheaval of the coronavirus crisis.

OK, she did the diplomatic version of “shove it”:

"The federal chancellor thanks President Trump for his invitation to the G7 summit at the end of June in Washington. As of today, considering the overall pandemic situation, she cannot agree to her personal participation, to a journey to Washington," German government spokesman Steffen Seibert told POLITICO Friday.

"She will of course continue to monitor the development of the pandemic."

No great surprise, she and the others saw right through his scheme:

But while officials said Merkel's reluctance to attend the G7 summit was primarily based on the ongoing health situation, they also said European G7 leaders are concerned that Trump may simply want to use their visit for an election-year photo op, and as a basis for declaring the world is getting back to work — thanks to him.

She is also, politico.eu reminds us, a research scientist and based her decision on science.

Advantage Biden, with risks; Trump disapproval grows: POLL

Source: abc

Biden holds a lead over Trump among registered voters.

May 30, 2020, 11:00 PM

Joe Biden holds a 10-point lead over President Donald Trump among registered voters in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, but that's sliced in half among those certain to vote, reflecting challenges for Biden in terms of voter commitment and enthusiasm alike.

Trump has his own risks, including sharply negative views of the economy and greater criticism of his handling of the coronavirus pandemic. His overall job approval rating is back under water, 45-53% among all Americans, with a seven-point rise in disapproval since late March.

Trump's rating specifically for handling the outbreak is a nearly identical 46-53%, with approval down 5 percentage points and disapproval up 8 in the past two months. The margin worsens in terms of strong sentiment: The number who strongly disapprove of his work on the crisis exceeds those who strongly approve by 15 points, 43 versus 28%.

Neither is popular in this poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates. ........................
