From the beginning, George Blumenschein suspected his mistress of poisoning him, but the buttoned-up oncologist from M.D. Anderson did not tell authorities or colleagues.
"I wanted them to find out it wasn't who I thought it was," Blumenschein testified Friday.
He did not want to believe the assailant could be Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo, another doctor at the world-famous cancer institution with whom he was having an affair. And if it was she, he did not want her to know he suspected her while flat on his back in the hospital where she worked.
"I was just really vulnerable," he said.

[font color=green]Dr. Blumenscchein was poisoned with ethylene glycol (the chemical in anti-freeze and has a sweet taste) poured in his coffee. The doctor was found to have central nervous system depression, cardiopulmonary complications and renal failure. He subsequently had to undergo dialysis.[/font]

Protective order sought in Peterson child abuse case
Minnesota authorities have requested a protective order on behalf of NFL running back Adrian Peterson's 4-year-old son, whose injuries from spanking led a Montgomery County grand jury last week to indict the star athlete on a felony child abuse charge.
The document provides details of the case in which the 29-year-old East Texas native used a "switch" or thin, tapered tree branch to hit the child. The athlete told police he gave the boy two "whoopings."
The protective order, filed Friday by Minnesota child protection authorities and a prosecutor, describes the child's injuries and seeks to limit Peterson's access to the boy to prevent further harm through physical discipline.
The child, who lives with his mother in Minnesota, visited Peterson's home in The Woodlands from May 6 to May 22. He was spanked with the switch around May 18.

Dictator Yoweri Museveni has been unguested by Texas
Diana Pfaff of the Irving Convention Center has notified Dallas Voice that the Ugandan Embassy had until the close of business today to get all paperwork back to them. Because embassy officials did not meet that deadline, the event featuring Ugandan dictator Yoweri Museveni will not take place Sunday in Irving as originally planned.
Earlier today, the Four Seasons Hotel in Irving canceled Museveni’s reservation and the Marriotts put the gay back in Gaylord hotel by refusing to accommodate him either.

Davis swings hard in debate but doesn’t rattle Abbott
EDINBURG — Wendy Davis came out swinging in the first debate in the race for governor Friday, accusing her rival of hurting schoolchildren and helping to repress votes. But she failed to rattle a poised Greg Abbott.
The Democrat, trailing in polls and wanting to pump energy into her campaign, used the debate as a high-stakes gambit to paint the Republican attorney general as being for big-money contributors. She addressed him directly, accusing him in a measured voice and a frequent smile, while painting herself as a champion for the less advantaged, particularly on education.
“The [funding] cuts that you’re defending that have left our classrooms overcrowded, that have left our teachers laid off — that’s not liberal, that’s not conservative, that’s just dumb,” said Davis, a state senator from Fort Worth.
Abbott said that he wants to move Texas schools beyond an outdated, “one-size-fits-all” funding method and make Texas first in the nation, especially in concentrating on younger students.

Cats like to sit on computer keyboards, kitchen counters, houseplants and infants' cribs, so it's usually a waste of energy to provide a cat house.
However, these elaborate structures designed by Los Angeles architects might be worth the effort. Your cat will think it is an elaborate piece of fine art, compelling the feline to appropriate it as its own territory.
The architects provided their cat design services, pro bono of course, as part of a fundraiser put on by Architects for Animals for the nonprofit Fixnation to support spaying and neutering cats in the Los Angeles area.
The houses were then donated to Fixnation, which will donate them to various cats that live outdoors, according to representatives of the event.

A North Carolina-based company will replace Texas A&’s football field with another natural surface at the cost of $300,000, sources told The Eagle late Thursday afternoon.
The move comes after torrential rains last Friday and Saturday when the Bryan-College Station area was inundated with 4.5 inches of rain in less than 24 hours, leading to sloppy conditions in Saturday night’s game between Texas A&M and Rice. After the game in which A&M won 38 to 10, John Sharp, chancellor for the Texas A&M system, led the decision to make a change and bring in the grass from Carolina Green.
“After the game, the chancellor asked the staff and the Kyle Field redevelopment committee to look at options,” Steve Moore, A&M System vice chancellor of marketing and communications said. “He wanted to know how to provide the best competitive playing surface we could going to forward and that’s what led to this process and the decisions that have been made.”
Carolina Green’s sod, which is being shipped in on 24 refrigerated trucks, has a much thicker sod base than the grass that was installed in early August, meaning it will take less time for it to take a firm hold at Kyle Field. The next game is Oct. 11 when A&M plays Mississippi. They will begin installing the field the week of Sept. 29.

Greg Abbott escalates the TV ad wars with an attack on Wendy Davis ethics as an elected official
The Greg Abbott campaign has gone in television with a direct attack on Democratic challenger Wendy Davis’ ethics, saying she voted on legislation as a state senator that personally benefited her business. The spot marks a political escalation by the Abbott campaign, which has largely ignored Davis in its TV ad campaign and instead focused on the Republican attorney general’s platform and personal story. While Davis has targeted Abbott relentlessly on TV, Abbott’s ads until now have been an effective contrast, signaling to his Republican base that he’s in good shape.
The new 30-second spot, which the Abbott camp says will air statewide on television, puts both candidates on TV with attack ads as the campaign for governor enters its final weeks before the November election. Abbott leads in the polls, but Davis advisers believe steady attacks accusing the long-time Republican office-holder of protecting political donors has had an effect. In the Abbott ad, an announcer accuses Davis of voting for a law governing a toll-road project in which her law firm was doing work. Against newspaper headlines and a black-and-white photo of Davis, the commercial says Davis’ legal work is part of an open FBI investigation.
Abbott campaign spokesman Matt Hirsch says in a statement accompanying release of the ad, “Electing a new governor is a serious proposition, and Texans deserve a candidate that will work on behalf of the public’s interest and not their own.” Davis has made Abbott’s ethics as attorney general a central theme of her campaign. She has accused Abbott of helping big campaign donors, including a hospital whose board chairman gave him $250,000 before he sided in court against victims of a problem doctor and contributors who benefitted from millions in questionable taxpayer subsidies.
The legal work cited in the Abbott ad involved legislative action by Davis in the Texas Senate that affected her law firm. As a senator, she voted on a bill governing a project by the North Texas Tollway Authority, which had hired her firm to handle condemnation cases. She also backed changes in collecting unpaid tolls that came before the NTTA hired law firms — including Davis’ — to carry out the collections. Further, as a state senator, she sought federal money for a transportation project being handled by her Fort Worth law firm.
