The List:
1. Awesome Deep Fried Nutella® – Cream cheese and Nutella® are whipped and spread over flaky Phyllo dough sheets, rolled up, and deep fried. Served with a drizzle of honey and shaved almonds.
2. Deep Fried Cuban Roll – A filling of slow-cooked pork shoulder, chopped ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and secret sauce is spread onto a slice of Swiss cheese, rolled up in pastry dough and deep fried. Roll is served with a side of majo sauce for dipping.
3. Fernie’s Deep Fried King Ranch Casserole –This Texas-shaped creation is melted cheese, salty, spicy, goodness that is dipped in a zesty southwestern egg wash and coated in panko bread crumbs. Deep fried golden brown and crunchy on the outside; steamy and creamy on the inside! Served with a side of red, white and blue tortilla chips and your choice of our homemade “salsafied” sour cream or cheesy queso.
4. Fried Thanksgiving Dinner – Mama’s homemade stuffing and diced roasted turkey are rolled in a ball. Next it’s dipped in southern cream corn and rolled in seasoned corn meal - all fried to a crispy golden brown. Served with old fashion giblet brown gravy. There is a zesty orange cranberry sauce for dipping.
5. Golden Fried Millionaire Pie – Sweetened, fluffy cream cheese filling is loaded with golden pineapple and Texas pecans then wrapped in a flaky pie crust and fried to a golden brown. Topped with whipped cream, toasted coconut and candied pecans.
6. Southern Style Chicken-Fried Meatloaf – Homemade meatloaf slices are coated in an authentic Texas chicken-fried breading and deep fried golden brown. Served with garlic mashed potatoes, Texas cream gravy, and a ketchup/brown sugar glaze for dipping.
7. Spinach Dip Bites – Creamy and delicious spinach artichoke dip bites are coated with crispy tortilla chips and flash-fried until golden brown. Bites are served with salsa for an additional kick.
8. Texas Fried Fireball – Pimento cheese, pickles, cayenne pepper and bacon are rolled into a ball, dipped in buttermilk, covered with a jalapeno-infused batter and deep fried. Served with chipotle ranch for dipping.

Obamacare is Scary and the Tolling of the Bells

For 25 years I have dealt with health insurance carriers in my private practice as a psychologist. I’ve played the shell game of “clean claim forms” where the carrier rejects a claim for vague or outright incorrect reason. “No pre-authorization obtained” is cited even when I have used the authorization number provided. Sometimes the claim is simply not paid and, when I set on the phone and finally get to a representative I am told “we don’t know what happened just file it again”. It is a maddening system that most people would describe as unworkable.
Tom Hunter spent nine years working for a variety of health insurance companies programming claim systems. In a recent article he described how his unique experience taught him a lot about how health care is delivered in the United States. Pre-ACA healthcare delivery was a cash cow, a gravy train for all the health care providers, including doctors, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and device manufacturers.
Mr. Hunter noted that before the Affordable Care Act, the gravy train did not stop with providers — the green gravy that is premium dollars was liberally spread over insurance companies too, leading to things like United Health Care’s Stephen Helmsley taking home nearly a $1 billion salary during one year. He described the practice of not performing focused underwriting at the time a policy was issued but instead waiting until a large claim is made and then finding minor errors in the application and denying all policy claims and dropping the person’s coverage. People who had pre-existing conditions were never accepted in the first place so, in reality only healthy people (who don’t get sick) have been able to obtain coverage.
A Kaiser Health Tracking Poll: March 2013 found that the majority of Americans remain unsure how the implementation of Obamacare will affect them. While most of the law’s individual provisions remain popular, many of the most well-liked elements are the least well-known among the public. The Extreme Right recognizes that, once the program is implemented, that citizens will begin to understand the benefits and this will be a costly defeat for those who oppose the Act.
Wendell Potter, former health insurance executive, notes that the clock is ticking against those who want to overturn Obamacare. Because supporters of the law have been outspent by hundreds of millions of dollars already — with much of that cash coming from insurance companies and their business pals worried about shrinking profit margins — it’s little wonder that opinion surveys continue to show that more Americans oppose the law than support it.
What has already happened with Obamacare? How about:
*71 Million Kids & Adults With Private Insurance Have Received No-Cost Preventive Care.
*Discrimination By Insurance Companies For Children With Pre-Existing Conditions Was Banned.
*Consumers Received $1.1 Billion in Rebates From Their Insurance Companies.
*3.1 Million More Young Adults Have Health Insurance Through Their Parent’s Plan.
*Seniors Have Saved More Than $6.1 Billion on Their Prescription Drugs Since 2010
For the doubtless “usual suspect” posters to this blog will you please offer a specific example of where the act is bad. In tribute to BillyWayne please cite sources so that we can know you just didn’t parrot the talking points offered by Cruz or the other pundits. I have found that when one challenges back on the specifics of the law that the opposition fades or hides behind distortions or outright lies.
So, everybody get in line and start the debate. Even James Clark might chime in since he doesn’t have to appear in public to do so.

Russian Teen Fights Homophobia on Twitter
With the Russian government passing its new laws on gay "propaganda", it has effectively created one of the most hostile climates on the planet for its LGBT citizens. LGBT Russians face discrimination, entrapment, and violence, and are unable to go to the authorities should they become the victim of a crime. This has caused many gay Russians and LGBT advocacy groups to go underground, often relying on the anonymity of the web to stay safe. One activist is choosing not to remain anonymous, though, and has taken to Twitter to advocate for his fellow LGBT Russians both nationally and globally. The account is @ru_lgbt_teen, and currently boasts almost 700 followers. The account's administrator recently say down for an interview with Vice Magazine.
In terms of the actual content of the account, much of it is standard fare for any teenager on social media: personal life updates, snapshots of his daily activities, his periodic struggles with depression. His current home, however, as well as his willingness to display his homosexuality, makes it much more revolutionary. He also tweets updates on Russian news, as well as homoerotic historical depictions of men from Russia's artistic past. Thanks to the release of the Vice interview, many have also reached out and expressed their support for the Twitter account, which he occasionally retweets.

Greg Abbott says San Antonio shouldn’t pass ordinance protecting gays
GOP governor’s candidate Greg Abbott is panning a proposed ordinance that would prohibit discriminating against gay and transgender people.
Abbott joins the three Republican candidates vying to replace him as attorney general in opposing the ordinance, which prohibits discrimination against people because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Those two categories would be added to a list of groups protected by city code.
The ordinance mirrors language already adopted in five other large Texas cities, including Dallas. AG candidates Railroad Commissioner Barry Smitherman, Rep. Dan Branch of Dallas and Sen. Ken Paxton of Plano all have come out against the ordinance.
That chorus was joined by Abbott on Monday, who said it would impinge on religious freedoms. He also suggested it would run afoul of the Texas Constitution, which was amended in 2005 to define marriage as between a man and a woman.

National Salmonella outbreak highlights precautions around live poultry--at least 32 Texans sick
EAST TEXAS (KYTX) - In light of an ongoing Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 316 people in 37 states the Texas Department of State Health Services reminds people about the importance of basic hygiene practices around live poultry. At least 32 people in Texas have gotten sick after handling live poultry as part of the largest ever Salmonella outbreak linked to live birds in the United States.
"With the popularity of backyard chickens, more people are at risk of being exposed to Salmonella. All poultry can carry the bacteria.," said Dr. Linda Gaul, Texas State Epidemiologist. "Fortunately, the risk of infection can be greatly reduced by taking some common sense steps like washing your hands with soap and water immediately after handling birds and not bringing live poultry into your home."

State lets near-bankrupt Luminant expand mines
TATUM — Scattered between the green rolling hills and thick pine forests of East Texas are small towns that have one thing in common: For generations, they have relied on coal mines and power plants for jobs, population growth and economic development.
The industry helps define Tatum, a community barely a half-hour from the Louisiana border. The Little League team is called the Miners, and their fields were paid for by utility companies. Year after year, hilltops are cleared by strip mining, then restored with grass, trees and ponds, before another hill is scoured for coal.
But that process is now at risk because one of the region’s major mining companies is on the brink of bankruptcy. Besides the potential economic damage, bankruptcy could mean that heavily mined land goes unrestored because Luminant Mining Co. was allowed to operate without a reserve fund to pay for reclamation. The company insists it has sufficient money available to meet all of its responsibilities.
Luminant and its parent company are struggling with more than $30 billion in debt and a rapidly dwindling cash flow. Analysts have said bankruptcy is possible within months.

Dog fighting crackdown nets 12 arrests in 4 states

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A federal and state investigation into dog fighting and gambling has resulted in the arrest of 12 people from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Texas.
U.S. Attorney George Beck said Monday that the 12 are charged with conducting an illegal gambling business and multiple dog fighting charges, including promoting dog fights. Additional defendants are being sought.
Federal and state officers served search warrants Friday in simultaneous raids in Alabama and Georgia. They seized 367 pit bulls in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi. They also seized more than $500,000 in cash.
The Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA are caring for the animals at undisclosed locations. ASPCA vice president Tim Rickey said the dogs are finally getting a loving hand from people who care for them.

Poopgate: DPS releases documents to back up its 'jars of feces' statements
AUSTIN – The controversy that engulfed the Texas Department of Public Safety in July after leaders said troopers had confiscated jars of urine and feces from abortion activists at the Capitol prompted the agency's chief to urge the release of photos to prove it was not playing politics.
"I am tired of reading that we made this stuff up," Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw wrote in a July 14 email to another top agency official. "Let's get the photos we have to members and the media. Does anyone realistically believe we would fabricate evidence to support a political agenda? Amazing."
Internal agency communications obtained by the San Antonio Express-News/Houston Chronicle show how state police prepared for the chaos that ensued the day the Senate took a final vote in mid-July to pass a sweeping package of abortion restrictions. The documents include security photos of activists, three photos of confiscated items and communication from DPS intelligence analysts highlighting potential threats.
On the day of the vote, thousands of activists – in support and opposition – rallied and demonstrated at the Capitol.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon blasts back at Perry trip
Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has pulled up the welcome mat and put on the gloves.
Nixon was initially dismissive of the Texas governor’s business luring trip to Missouri this Thursday. But that was when the $100,000 relatively tame TV ads were running that just featured businessowners touting Texas.
But when the radio ads began a few days ago attacking Nixon’s veto of a tax cut, Missouri Democrats began fighting back. The first push back was left to Secretary of State Jason Kander, who wrote Perry a letter basically suggesting he stay home.
Then Missouri radio station KTRS refused to run the pro-Texas ad.
