Ryan Being Vetted for VP

Source: National Review

I’m reliably informed that Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the Budget Committee chairman, has submitted paperwork to the Romney campaign. Sources confirm that he is being vetted for the vice-presidential nomination.

Meme Alleges Clarence Thomas's Wife Got $1.5M From Healthcare Act Foes

A new meme is making its way around the Internet, showing a photo of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas with the caption: "This [man's] family received $1.5 million from health care opponents... And is about to rule on health care reform."

The meme by Frank Chi, a digital strategist who advises Democratic campaigns and progressive organizations, has reintroduced the allegation just as anticipation is peaking over the Supreme Court's coming decision on the fate of the Affordable Care Act of 2010.

But while there have been a number of questions about Thomas's possible conflict of interest, the $1.5 million number may be a conflation of several different figures.

The number seems to have first been circulated this time last year by Democratic lawmaker Andrei Cherny, a candidate for Arizona's 9th Congressional District and former aide and adviser to presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

Today in Romney-Ryan Nonsense

We interrupt our (er, my) wall-to-wall coverage of the Supreme Court to bring you this breaking news bulletin. A centerpiece of the Republican economic agenda is a big, fat fraud.

I'm talking about the tax and budget proposals Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, and their Republican allies have been promoting. While their plans are not identical, they say they are going to cut taxes dramatically, first by extending all of the Bush tax cuts permanently and then by reducing income and corporate taxes even more.

You don’t have to be a budget expert to spot the problem here: The government would lose a ton of revenue from these tax cuts. The deficit would skyrocket unless lawmakers enacted dramatic cuts in programs on which the poor and middle class depend. Meanwhile, the wealthiest taxpayers in America would get a windfall.

Republicans have been saying they have a way to deal with these consequences. They’d end "tax expenditures" (loopholes and tax breaks designed to encourage certain activities) that, they suggest, mostly benefit the wealthy. The Republicans never specify which loopholes they’d close. Who has time for such details? But, they promise, closing the loopholes would generate enough money to offset the cost of the tax cuts, so that the deficit wouldn't go up even as everybody’s tax burden went down.

Sound too good to be true? It is.

Greeks line up for free food as turmoil in country mounts

Starving Greeks queued around the block for free food handouts yesterday as the country's politicians managed to end a crippling stalemate to form a coalition government.

Young children as well as the elderly waited in line in Athens to collect the parcels of fruit and vegetables donated by farmers from Crete to help ease the devastating austerity faced by many Greeks.

But as hungry people collected food, a few miles away a new conservative-led alliance was formed, vowing to renegotiate the country's strict European bailout in a bid to breath economic life back into the debt-stricken country.

Attorney General says contempt citation unwarranted

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday dismissed as unwarranted a vote by a U.S. congressional committee to charge him with contempt of Congress after the Obama administration withheld documents related to a failed gun-running investigation.

"The action that the committee took yesterday was unwarranted, unnecessary and unprecedented," he said after meeting European Union justice officials in the Danish capital.

The contempt move comes after the Obama administration asserted executive privilege as its reason for withholding some of the documents requested by the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives' Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

It set up yet another confrontation between Democratic President Barack Obama and the House, intensifying the bitter partisanship that has prevailed in Washington since just after Obama took office.

The botched operation was meant to help U.S. law enforcement agents follow the flow of guns from Arizona into Mexico, but they lost track of many of the weapons, which later were involved in crimes.

Holder told a news conference he remained optimistic the conflict with the committee could still be resolved on the basis of the administration's proposal.

Anthony Weiner to Faux .... ?

The former congressman from New York has kept a fairly low profile since exiting the political stage last year under circumstances you're all familiar with, so it was interesting to see him quoted in Jeremy Peters' story about Fox News that posted a bit ago:

“The conventional wisdom among Democrats is: Why participate in their Kabuki theater?” said Anthony Weiner, the former New York congressman who was one of the few members of his party regularly to accept Fox News invitations. He said those who ignore the network make a mistake by passing up a loud and influential megaphone, one that has no equivalent in cable news.

“You can huff and puff about how outrageous it is,” Mr. Weiner added. “But they have millions and millions of people watching them. And you have to proceed under the assumption that at least some of those people are persuadable.”

It was not a surprise from Weiner, who always shared his mentor Sen. Chuck Schumer's theory that, at least locally, most press is good press.

American Austerity: Why the States Cutting Spending Are Doing Worse

It's not working on that side of the Atlantic. And it's not working over here, either.

Austérité isn't just for the Europeans. In November 2010, Republicans running on an anti-stimulus platform crushed Democrats in Washington and across the country and promised to start slashing spending to unlock growth.

How's that going? Adam Hersh compares the 20 states have cut public spending with the 30 states that have expanded spending. Here's his upshot graph (note that the metric is group median):

Latest Republican poll shows a refusal to acknowledge facts...

POLL: MOST REPUBLICANS STILL BELIEVE THAT IRAQ HAD WMD | A new poll conducted by Dartmouth government professor Benjamin Valentino found that 63 percent of Republican respondents still believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction when the United States invaded in 2003, even though this assertion has been thoroughly debunked. In comparison, only 27 percent of independents and less than 15 percent of Democrats believed in the misinformation. Additionally, 64 percent of Republican respondents believe that President Obama was born in another country. As the Huffington Post’s Dan Froomkin notes, “this latest poll result seems to indicate a refusal — unique to the modern Republican Party — to acknowledge facts.”
