Oops! I misread at first. I thought it was months instead of years. Which...

would have given him plenty of time to run for POTUS in 2016!

Sounds like another grifter:

Republic of Texas (group)

The Republic of Texas is a general term for several organizations, some of which have been called militia groups,[1][2][3] that claim that the annexation of Texas by the United States was illegal and that Texas remains an independent nation to this day, but is under occupation. The issue of the legal status of Texas led the group to claim have reinstated a provisional government on December 13, 1995. Activists within the movement claim over 40,000 active supporters. There is, however, no widespread popular support for an independent Texas.[4]

The movement for independence was started by Richard Lance (Rick) McLaren. McLaren concluded that, in 1861, Texans voted four-to-one to leave the Union. According to McLaren, Texas met the qualifications, under international law, of a captive nation of war, since the end of the American Civil War in 1865.

The movement split into three factions in 1996, one led by McLaren, one by David Johnson and Jesse Enloe, and the third by Archie Lowe and Daniel Miller. In 1997, McLaren and his followers kidnapped Joe and Margaret Ann Rowe, held them hostage at the Fort Davis Resort, and demanded the release of a movement member in exchange for the release of the Rowes.[5] [6] McLaren's wife, Evelyn, convinced him to surrender peacefully after a week-long standoff with police and Texas Rangers. McLaren and four other Republic of Texas members were sent to prison.[7] This effectively destroyed the McLaren faction, and the Johnson-Enloe faction was discredited after two of its members, Jack Abbot Grebe Jr. and Johnie Wise, were convicted in 1998 of threatening to assassinate several government officials, including President Bill Clinton.[8]

In 2003, what remained of the movement consolidated into one dominant group recognizing an "interim" government (which replaced the "provisional" government), headed by Daniel Miller. This interim government claimed authority from the original proclamations of 1995 and set up a headquarters in the town of Overton. The movement split again over legal arguments, resulting in the current state of affairs. Most of the original personalities of the movement have disappeared from public view. The organization's finances have come from donations and the sale of some items such as a Republic of Texas Passport. The Republic of Texas headquarters in Overton, Texas burned down on August 31, 2005; one person was moderately injured.[9]

In January 2004, a man in jail in Aspen, Colorado claimed that the state of Colorado had no jurisdiction to extradite him to California on a probation warrant, on the grounds that he was a citizen of the Republic of Texas. He claimed that the sliver of land which contains Aspen was a part of the original Republic of Texas and, as such, he was not a citizen of the United States. His claim was rejected by the courts.[10]

In a case involving Richard McLaren and his wife Evelyn as plaintiffs, the United States District Court for the District of Columbia ruled, on April 30, 1998: "Despite plaintiffs' argument ..... in 1845, Texas became the 28th state of the United States of America. The Republic of Texas no longer exists."[11]

Their last stand at the resort was followed by media. They were not popular, as it was said they had bullied some people into taking their worthless currency. Their being well armed made them hard to reason with.

Allegedly, Texas Rangers did nothing under orders of GWB as the perps fled into the desert. The idea was that conditions would make them surrender or die on the run. From what I heard, no tears would have been shed if the latter had occured. It appears that speculation was in error, according to the Wikipedia entry.

Oh, yeah, the nuttiness has been brewing for a long, long time...

handmade34, please post article on the march in that picture. This is the first I heard of it. TIA.

August 24th, 2013 is not that far away. It needs to be big enough to force media coverage. They haven't even covered this story that alp provided for us here, and it should be on the national news.

Thank goodness Jesse Jackson is in this one, he has right on his side, and has done the right thing for decades despite the smearing by RW media. They find anything they can to make him look bad, and he's apologized for them, but it's equality that they really hate. Any person that stands up for that is smeared by media.

And agreed, SYG was in the instructions given to the jurors, IIRC. EOM.

A Plan to Simplify the Tax Code for Businesses and Give Working Families a Better Deal

“...But if we’re going to give businesses a better deal, then we're also going to have to give workers a better deal, too,” President Obama said.

I want to use some of the money that we save by closing these loopholes to create more good construction jobs with infrastructure initiatives that I already talked about. We can build a broader network of high-tech manufacturing hubs that leaders from both parties can support. We can help our community colleges arm our workers with the skills that a global economy demands. All these things would benefit the middle class right now and benefit our economy in the years to come.

"And that's what I'm going to be focused on not just for the next few months," he said. "I'm going to be focused for every one of the 1,270 days I've got left in my presidency on how to make sure that we've got more opportunity and more security for everybody who is willing to work hard in this country. That's where I believe America needs to go."

Learn more about President Obama's plan to simplify the tax code for businesses and create jobs and economic growth:

FACT SHEET: A Better Bargain for the Middle Class: Jobs

One of the cornerstones of the President’s plan to create a better bargain for the middle class is to ensure that every American who is willing to work for it will have the opportunity for a good job that pays good wages. In today’s speech, the President laid out an idea that both parties should be able to support to create jobs: a plan that simplifies the tax code for our businesses and gives working families a better deal.

Our current tax code is broken and too complex, with businesses that play by the rules paying a 35% tax rate while many corporations that can hire hundreds of lawyers pay virtually no taxes at all. That is why the President has called for a revenue-neutral simplification of our business tax code to eliminate loopholes that encourage companies to ship jobs overseas and establishes a top tax rate of 28%. Under the President’s proposal, some businesses would pay less, some corporations would pay more, but everyone would pay their fair share. But if we’re going to give businesses a better deal, we should give the people who work there a better deal too. Today, the President is calling for a pro-growth tax reform and jobs package that would be fully offset using one-time revenues raised as we transition to a new business tax system. The transition revenue would support much-needed investments such as modernizing our infrastructure; creating new manufacturing hubs; and training our workers with the skills they need for the jobs of today and tomorrow. At the same time, President Obama remains committed to pursuing a long-term deficit reduction deal that includes revenue-raising individual tax reform and a balanced approach to replacing the damaging sequester.

The bottom line is that the President will work with Republicans on a package to simplify our business tax code so long as it includes real investments to help restore middle class security, create jobs and grow the economy.

Naturally, the 1% owned media will do all they can to obfuscate. block and edit this to depress the Democratic voting block.

They will be twisting his plan because it will curtail their profits by eliminating the loopholes that grow their monopoly power. The ignoratti will fall for it.

Between him hugging PBO and this, I'm starting to like him:

"I find it interesting that Sen. Paul is accusing us of having a "Gimme, gimme, gimme" attitude toward federal spending when in fact New Jersey is a donor state and we get 61 cents back on every dollar we send to Washington. Interestingly, Kentucky gets $1.51 on every dollar they send to Washington," he said.

"So if Sen. Paul wants to start looking at where he's going to cut spending to afford defense, maybe he should start looking at the pork barrel spending he brings home to Kentucky."

That should go VIRAL.

My new one for answering Dittohead Teabaggers:

'You say minimum wage, unions, worker rights and certain people voting are bad for business. Good news, there's a tried and proven economic model that will suit you fine, then.

It's called slavery. Great for business, it was. Keep on voting for those selling that stuff and you and your kids will get there.'

They all end up looking like this, though...

And then there's the need for a dust pan to clean up the brain matter...

Securing the Vote for All Americans

by Valerie Jarrett - July 30, 2013

Yesterday, President Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder, and Secretary of Labor Tom Perez met with civil rights leaders, and state and local elected officials at the White House to discuss how to safeguard every eligible American’s right to vote in light of the recent Supreme Court decision on Shelby County vs. Holder.

The Supreme Court’s decision invalidating one of the Voting Rights Act’s core provisions, upsets decades of well-established practices that help make sure voting is fair, especially in places where voting discrimination has been historically prevalent.

President Obama acknowledged that for nearly 50 years, the Voting Rights Act has helped secure the right to vote for millions of Americans, and expressed deep disappointment about the recent decision. He asked the leaders in the room for their ideas on how to strengthen voting rights, and also encouraged them to continue educating their communities on the Voting Rights Act, and how to exercise voting rights.

We’ve seen much progress towards guaranteeing every American the right to vote. But, as the Supreme Court recognized, voting discrimination still exists. And while the decision is a setback, it doesn’t represent the end of either our efforts to end voting discrimination, or our basic right to vote.

Since the decision, President Obama has called on Congress to pass legislation to ensure every American has equal access to the polls. The Voting Rights Act has been reauthorized repeatedly by wide bipartisan margins in Congress, and signed into law by Republican presidents. In addition, every single American should have an interest in ensuring that every eligible American is able to exercise his or her right to vote. So we remain hopeful that we will find a legislative solution to ensure a fair, and equal voting process.

Yesterday’s meeting was another step forward to protect the vote, and we will continue to do everything in our power to secure this most basic right for all Americans.

Yesterday’s participants included:

* Barbara Arnwine, President & Executive Director, the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law
* Napoleon Bracy, Alabama State Representative
* Roslyn Brock, Chairman, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Board of Directors
* John Echohawk, Executive Director, Native American Rights Fund

Most of us remember that ensuring voting rights were among the things Obama spoke of as goals for his second term, along with addressing climate change and raising the minimum wage.

The media has given scant or no coverage to the hardest working president since FDR. I appreciate his working for us very much.

I love them both! I'd forgotten how tall Kerry is. Reminds me of these pictures of Kerry:

I know a young man from Ethiopia, who is now an American citizen. He joined the American Armed Forces this year. And I wonder if he will be one of their young leaders.

Beautiful hearts and spirits worldwide will change the planet. Carter was a great POTUS and I'm glad to see him back in D.C. for any reason.

Thanks ProSense for this great picture.

It is fun being in the same decade with you.

WHY Obama CARES:

If one hasn't lived through these things, it's no big deal. For him and us, it's important.

July 30, 2013

But, but, now the Repugnants say defunding Obamacare will destroy the GOP!

Make up your minds, GOP!

Oh, wait, they don't know how. The Koch brothers made up their minds up for them.

My bad.

Yes! This President is a REAL Democrat

Obama is definitely NOT one of Breitbart's caricatures of a 'REAL Democrat, liberal or progressive' as portrayed in media and online. He's the only REAL Democrat left.
