Black security guard stops shooter in a bar - then gets gunned down by a cop

BLACK SECURITY GUARD STOPS SHOOTER IN A BAR - THEN GETS GUNNED DOWN BY COP WHO MISTOOK HIM FOR CRIMINAL

A black security guard this weekend prevented a potential mass shooting at the bar where he worked - and was then gunned down by an Illinois police officer who mistook him for a criminal

WGN TV reports that 26-year-old armed security guard Jemel Roberson was working at Manny's Blue Room Bar in Robbins, Illinois Sunday morning when he was attacked by a gun-wielding man who witnesses say had been kicked out of the bar earlier in the evening.

Roberson returned fire on the man and managed to subdue him and pin him to the ground.

However, when a Midlothian, Illinois police officer showed up on the scene, he opened fire and killed Roberson because he thought Roberson was the true assailant.

"Everybody was screaming out 'he was a security guard,' and they basically saw a black man with a gun and killed him," witness Adam Harris tells WGN TV.

Today, November 9th, is Carl Sagan's birthday

Carl Edward Sagan was born November 9, 1934 in Brooklyn, New York.
His father, Samuel Sagan, was an immigrant garment worker from today's Ukraine.
His mother, Rachel, was a housewife from New York.

Sagan claimed that his "sense of wonder" came from his father, who in his free time gave apples to the poor or helped soothe labor-management tensions within New York's garment industry.

After his family moved to Rahway, New York, e attended Rahway High School, where he was a straight A student.
By graduation, his classmates had voted him "Most Likely to Succeed."

Though only 16, he was admitted to the University of Chicago, where he earned a B.S. degree in Physics in 1955.
He went on to earn an M.S. degree in Physics in 1956, before earning a PhD in 1960.

In 1961, he published an article in the journal "Science" on the atmosphere of Venus, while also working with NASA's Mariner 2 Team, and served as a "Planetary Sciences Consultant" to the Rand Corporation.

He became an assistant professor at Harvard, where he lectured, performed research, and advised graduate students from 1963 to 1968, as well as working at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Mass.

In 1968, Sagan was denied tenure at Harvard.
Cornell University astronomer Thomas Gold invited Sagan to join the faculty there.
Sagan accepted Gold's offer and remained a faculty member at Cornell for nearly 30 years until his death in 1996.

Sagan was associated with the U.S Space Program from it's inception,
From the 1950's onward, he worked as an adviser to NASA, where one of his duties included briefing the Apollo astronauts before their flights to the Moon.

Sagan was married three times and had five children.

Isaac Asimov described Sagan as one of only two people he ever met whose intellect surpassed his own.

After suffering from myelodysplasia for two years, and receiving three bone marrow transplants from his sister Carol, Sagan died of pneumonia at the age of 62.

How Thousands of Already Cast Florida Ballots Could Be Tossed Aside Without Voters Knowing

Mother Jones Magazine
November 3, 2018

Since moving to Florida in 2007, Paul Cauchi has voted in person in his Miami-Dade county precinct.
But this year, after the county made a big push for vote-by-mail, he decided to give it a try.
He labored over the lengthy ballot stuffed with amendments, then, as he recalls, carefully signed the envelope and sent it in.

But when he went on the county's online voter information portal earlier this week to ensure that his ballot has been counted, he discovered an error message:
his signature either didn't match the version on record with the county, or he failed to sign the ballot at all.
"I felt really frustrated by it, and disappointed," he told Mother Jones.
"This is probably happening to other people."

Florida is one of a handful of states with a signature-matching law.
Such laws require that a signature on the envelope of an absentee ballot match the signature on file with county election officials.
In a state with tight races for governor, U.S. Senate, and many House of Representative seats, absentee ballots rejected over signature issues could prove greater than the candidates' margins of victory.
Signature problems affect voters of all parties and demographics, but data shows young and minority voters, as well as registered Democrats broadly, are more likely to have their ballots rejected.
While Florida counties are required to notify and provide voters with signature problems a chance to correct them before Election Day, county procedures vary widely, and the same demographic groups are less likely to be given an opportunity to fix any error.

Happy Birthday Grace Slick!

Grace Barnett Wing was born October 30, 1939, in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, Illinois.
After moving several times, her family settled in the San Francisco suburb of Palo Alto in the early 1950s.

In 1961, she married Gerald Slick, an aspiring filmmaker
.
Grace Slick worked as a model at an I. Magnin department store for three years.
She also started playing guitar and composing music

After watching the newly-formed Jefferson Airplane perform at The Matrix in San Francisco, Slick and her husband decided to start their own band.
She sang and played guitar, her husband, Jerry played drums, Jerry's brother, Darby Slick played lead guitar, and David Miner played bass guitar.
The band was named "The Great Society." and on October 15, 1965, the band made it's debut performance at a North Beach venue called "The Coffee Gallery."
Soon after that, Slick composed the psychedelic piece "White Rabbit."

Between October and December, 1965, "The Great Society" entered Golden Studios and recorded several tracks.
One single emerged from the demos called "Somebody To Love," which was written by Darby Slick.

In early 1967, Jefferson Airplane's singer, Signe Toly Anderson left the band to raise her child, and Jack Cassidy asked Slick to join them.
Slick stated that she joined the "Airplane" because it was run in a professional manner, unlike The Great Society.

With Slick on board, the "Airplane" began recording new music, and they turned in a more psychedelic direction from their former folk-rock style.
The album, "Surrealistic Pillow" included new recordings of "White Rabbit" and
"Somebody to Love," both of which became top 10 singles.

Jefferson Airplane became one of the most popular bands in the country and earned Slick a position of one of the most prominent female rock musicians of her time.

In an appearance on a 1969 appearance on The Dick Cavett Show, she became the first person to say "motherfucker" on television during a performance of
"We Can Be Together."

Years later, after retiring, and after a house fire, divorce, and breakup, Slick began drawing and painting animals, mainly to amuse herself and because doing so made her happy during a difficult period in her life.
Soon thereafter, she was approached about writing her memoir, which ultimately became "Somebody to Love? A Rock-and-Roll Memoir."

Grace Slick was inducted into the "Rock and Roll hall of Fame" in 1996 as a member of "Jefferson Airplane."
