Happy Birthday Grace Slick!

Grace Barnett Wing was born October 30, 1939, in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, Illinois.
After moving several times, her family settled in the San Francisco suburb of Palo Alto in the early 1950s.

In 1961, she married Gerald Slick, an aspiring filmmaker
.
Grace Slick worked as a model at an I. Magnin department store for three years.
She also started playing guitar and composing music

After watching the newly-formed Jefferson Airplane perform at The Matrix in San Francisco, Slick and her husband decided to start their own band.
She sang and played guitar, her husband, Jerry played drums, Jerry's brother, Darby Slick played lead guitar, and David Miner played bass guitar.
The band was named "The Great Society." and on October 15, 1965, the band made it's debut performance at a North Beach venue called "The Coffee Gallery."
Soon after that, Slick composed the psychedelic piece "White Rabbit."

Between October and December, 1965, "The Great Society" entered Golden Studios and recorded several tracks.
One single emerged from the demos called "Somebody To Love," which was written by Darby Slick.

In early 1967, Jefferson Airplane's singer, Signe Toly Anderson left the band to raise her child, and Jack Cassidy asked Slick to join them.
Slick stated that she joined the "Airplane" because it was run in a professional manner, unlike The Great Society.

With Slick on board, the "Airplane" began recording new music, and they turned in a more psychedelic direction from their former folk-rock style.
The album, "Surrealistic Pillow" included new recordings of "White Rabbit" and
"Somebody to Love," both of which became top 10 singles.

Jefferson Airplane became one of the most popular bands in the country and earned Slick a position of one of the most prominent female rock musicians of her time.

In an appearance on a 1969 appearance on The Dick Cavett Show, she became the first person to say "motherfucker" on television during a performance of
"We Can Be Together."

Years later, after retiring, and after a house fire, divorce, and breakup, Slick began drawing and painting animals, mainly to amuse herself and because doing so made her happy during a difficult period in her life.
Soon thereafter, she was approached about writing her memoir, which ultimately became "Somebody to Love? A Rock-and-Roll Memoir."

Grace Slick was inducted into the "Rock and Roll hall of Fame" in 1996 as a member of "Jefferson Airplane."

Donald Trump Is The "Antichrist" and Is "Going To Hell," Immigrant From Caravan Says

Newsweek
October 21, 2018

A Central American migrant has blasted President Donald Trump in angry comments to CNN's Bill Weir at the border between Mexico and Guatemala.

"Donald Trump is the antichrist," the unidentified man can be seen saying in Spanish during a CNN report airing this weekend on the immigrant caravan that has traveled to the Mexican border from Honduras.
"If he doesn't repent, he is going to hell," the man adds.

Thousands of Central American migrants have joined a caravan that originally formed more than a week ago in Honduras.
Trump has repeatedly threatened Central American leaders with complete aid cut offs if the group's progress is not stopped.
On Thursday, the president also called on Mexican authorities to stop the caravan's progress once it reached Mexico's southern border.

Mexico stationed hundreds of additional federal agents long the border to block the group from passing.
But the Associated Press (AP) reported on Sunday that some 2,000 of the migrants had managed to swim or boat across a river separating Guatemala and Mexico, entering the country illegally and vowing to continue toward the U.S.

Republican Voter Suppression Efforts Are Targeting Minorities, Journalist Says

Fresh Air
NPR
October 23, 2018

Since the 2010 election, 24 states have implemented new restrictions on voting.
Alabama now requires a photo ID to cast a ballot.
Other states, like Ohio and Georgia, have enacted "use-it-or-lose" laws, which strike voters from registration rolls if they haven't participated in an election within a prescribed period of time.

"Mother Jones" journalist Ari Berman, author of "Give Us the Ballot," says that many of the restrictions are part of a broader Republican strategy to tighten access to the ballot --
an effort that was bolstered in 2013 by the Supreme Court's "Shelby County v Holder" ruling.

[That] decision, Berman explains, "said that those states with the longest histories of discrimination no longer had to approve their voting changes with the federal government."

As a result, Berman says, "You're seeing a national effort by the Republican Party to try to restrict voting rights, and it's playing out in states all across the country."

Many of the new voting restrictions are occurring in states like Georgia, North Dakota and Kansas, that have critical races in the 2018 election.
Berman says that it's still unclear what the impact of the restrictions will be on the upcoming election, but he remains hopeful that the tide might be shifting on voter restrictions.

Name a good movie (or 2, or 3) with a bad title

Two very funny movies come to mind:

1) "Me, Myself & Irene" is a great comedy starring Jim Carey and Renee Zellweger
(especially that scene with the cow in the road)

2) "What Planet Are You From" was directed by Mike Nichols, and stars Gary Shandling, Annette Bening and John Goodman.

Dems zero in on Trump's alleged conflicts of interest

The Hill
October 21, 2018

Democrats itching to investigate President Trump's possible conflicts of interest have zeroed in on a familiar presidential foe: the FBI.

House Democrats released a trove of new documents this week that they say proved Trump was directly involved in cancelling plans developed by the federal government to sell the FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Critics argue that Trump intervened because he wanted to prevent commercial developers from building a new property at the downtown Washington, D.C. spot that might compete with the Trump Hotel, which is located across the street.

If Democrats take back the House this fall, they say they will seek to get their hands on more potentially damning documents, haul in FBI and General Services Administration (GSA) officials to testify under oath and possibly pass legislation to block the administration from moving forward with the rebuilding plan.

The FBI building is just one example of the many ways that Democrats could make life hell for the president if they win the ability to conduct rigorous oversight of the administration.

A nonprofit is helping sea turtles trapped in fishing nets

New York Times
October 18, 2018

A NONPROFIT IS HELPING SEA TURTLES TRAPPED IN FISHING NETS

Local Ocean Conservation, based in the town of Watamu, Kenya, is the only turtle rescue and rehabilitation center on the East African seaboard.
Since it's founding in 1997, it has protected about 1,000 nests, conducted more than 17,000 turtle rescues and treated more than 480 turtles in it's rehab center.

The group also rewards fishermen for reporting turtles caught in their nets:
300 shillings ($3) for small turtles and 1,000 shillings ($10) for large ones.

Local Ocean employs about 20 Kenyans, with beach patrollers monitoring and protecting turtles during the nesting season.
It also visits schools and offers education programs.

NYT Journalists Puncture Myth Of Trump As Self-Made Billionaire

Fresh Air
NPR

INVESTIGATIVE REPORTERS SUSANNE CRAIG AND DAVID BARSTOW SAY THE PRESIDENT RECEIVED TODAY'S EQUIVALENT OF $413 MILLION FROM HIS FATHER'S REAL ESTATE EMPIRE, THROUGH WHAT APPEARS TO BE TAX FRAUD.

(From show transcript)

TERRY GROSS; HOST

This is FRESH AIR. I'm Terry Gross.
Donald Trump's book, "The Art of the Deal," his TV show "The Apprentice" and his successful presidential campaign were based on his image as a brilliant, self-made billionaire.
But recent New York Times reporting reveals a different narrative.
It's based on a trove of more than a hundred thousands pages of documents, including confidential tax returns and financial records given to the Times by a secret source.

The documents reveal that by age 3, Trump was earning $200,000 a year as measured in today's dollars from his father Fred Trump's real estate empire.
Fred Trump made Donald Trump a millionaire by the time Donald was 8.
Over the years, Donald received today's equivalent of $413 million from his father's businesses.

Much of this money was transferred from father to son with the help of schemes designed to avoid paying taxes, some of which, according to my guests, were outright fraud.
Susanne Craig and David Barstow are two of the reporters at The New York Times who wrote a long investigative article about the many tax maneuvers Fred Trump devised to pass his vast fortune onto his children,
Susanne Craig writes about the intersection of politics, money and government for the Times.
David Barstow has won three Pulitzer Prizes.

In response to their reporting, a lawyer for President Trump provided a written statement saying:
"there was no fraud or tax evasion by anyone..The facts upon which the Times bases it's false allegations are extremely inaccurate."
But neither the President nor his lawyers disputed any of the specifics in the Times' financial reporting.
