Trump says Kavanaugh may be delayed

The Hill
September 17, 2018
03:14 PM EDT

President Trump on Monday opened the door to delaying Judge Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court confirmation to look into sexual misconduct allegations, but predicted the process will "work out very well."

If it takes a little delay it'll take a little delay," Trump told reporters at the White House.
"I'm sure it will work out very well."

When asked if Kavanaugh should withdraw, Trump said it was a "ridiculous question" but added that he has not spoken with the federal judge about the accusations.

Trump was making his first public remarks since a woman came forward to accuse Kavanaugh of assaulting her when they were both in high school, an accusation that has raised doubts about the prospects for Kavanaugh's confirmation.

But the president left no doubt that he will stand by his nominee to the high court, calling Kavanaugh "one of the finest people that anybody has known" and claiming the judge "never even had a little blemish on his record."

Dem lawmaker from Kavanaugh accuser's district: "I'm proud of my constituent"

The Hill
September 16, 2018
06:50 PM EDT

Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif) praised her constituent for speaking publicly about her sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Christine Blasey Ford spoke to the Washington Post on Sunday and detailed her allegations against Kavanaugh for the first time publicly.

The now 51-year-old professor at Palo Alto University in California described an incident between her and Kavanaugh when the pair were in high school.

She alleges that Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed one summer in the 1980s and forced himself on her.

Eshoo, who represents Palo Alto, praised Ford's decision to come forward on Sunday -- months after the congresswoman allegedly received a letter detailing Ford's claims.

"I'm proud of my constituent for the courage she has displayed to come forward to tell her full story to the American people," Eshoo said in a statement.
"In weighing her privacy and the consequences to herself and her family, she has demonstrated her willingness to risk these factors to present the truth.

"I am grateful to her for weighing these equities and choosing to speak out on one of the most consequential decisions in our country, an appointment to the highest Court in the land," she continued.

Allegations throw Kavanaugh confirmation into turmoil

The Hill
September 16, 2018
07:01 PM EDT

Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination was plunged into chaos after a woman accusing him of sexual assault spoke publicly for the first time about the allegation on Sunday.

The fallout from the decades-old allegation is putting a spotlight on Senate Republicans who must decide if they want to rush forward with Kavanaugh's nomination with questions lingering over the Senate's debate and vote.

Republicans have been confident for months that Kavanaugh would be confirmed by October, when the court starts it's next term.
But they are under intense pressure to delay a vote after Kavanaugh's accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, told the Washington Post that in high school in the early 1980s, Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed and forced himself on her.

Ford told the post that Kavanaugh "groped her over her clothes, grinding his body against hers and clumsily attempting to pull of her one-piece bathing suit and the clothing she wore under it."

Kavanaugh has denied the allegations.

Dianne Feinstein silenced Kavanaugh's accuser to protect the status quo

Vox.com
September 14, 2018

Sen. Dianne Feinstein didn't tell fellow Democrats on the Judiciary Committee that she'd received a letter accusing Brett Kavanaugh of attempting to force himself on a woman while both were in high school because, as the "New Yorker" reports, she didn't want his confirmation hearings to be about his private life.

"Feinstein also acted out of a sense that Democrats would be better off focusing on legal, rather than personal, issues in their questioning of Kavanaugh," Ronan Farrow and Jane Mayer write.

Her actions support Mayer and Farrow's description.
As the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, Feinstein spent the summer crafting her party's line of questioning for the confirmation hearings just ended.

She omitted the allegations...She kept the letter from the FBI until the "Intercept" reported it's existence.
She never asked Kavanaugh about it, in private or in public.
She did not even tell her fellow Democrats she had it.

Fifteen Tears Ago Today, We Lost a Legend -- Johnny Cash

John R. Cash, (born J.R. Cash, February 26, 1932 - September 12, 2003) was an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, actor, and author.

He is one of he best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 90 million records worldwide

Cash was known for his deep, calm bass-baritone voice, the distinctive sound of his "Tennessee Three" backing band, which is characterized by train-sound guitar rhythms, a rebelliousness coupled with an increasingly somber and humble demeanor, free prison concerts, and a trademark all-black stage wardrobe, which earned him the nickname "The Man in Black."

In 1997, Cash was diagnosed with autonomic neuropathy with diabetes.
He was hospitalized in 1998 with severe pneumonia, which damaged his lungs.
While hospitalized at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Cash died of complications from diabetes on September 12, 2003, aged 71 - less than 4 months after his wife, June Carter Cash died.
It was suggested that his health worsened due to a broken heart over June's death.

In a career that spanned almost five decades, Cash was the personification of country music to many people around the world; however, he was a musician who was not defined by a single genre.
He recorded songs that could be considered rock and roll, blues, rockabilly, folk, and gospel.
His diversity was evidenced by his presence in five major music halls of fame:
the Nashville Songwriter's Hall of Fame (1977), the Country Music Hall of Fame (1980), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1992), GMA's Gospel Music Hall of Fame (2010). and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame (2013).

Johnny Cash was the only country music artist ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame as a "performer," unlike the other country music members, who were inducted as "early influences."
