Conservative warns McConnell to not give up on ObamaCare repeal

The Hill
July 7, 2017
07:05 PM EDT

A leading House conservative is warning Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) he should not quit fighting to pass legislation to repeal and replace ObamaCare through the Senate.

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), the chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, is not happy about talk that Senate Republicans might give up that effort and instead work with Democrats on legislation to shore up troubled insurance markets.

"If we're waving the white flag on something that we've campaigned against for many years, it's not a good sign for what comes down the pipe.
How many white flags will we raise just when the going gets rough?" Meadows told The Hill in an interview.

"It's incumbent on us to work, to negotiate and find a happy medium that gets 51 votes in the Senate, 218 votes in the House and send it to the President," he added.

What's your favorite "great-but-overlooked" movie?

My first choice would be The Commitments (1991), one of the funniest movies I ever saw, but it's not really an overlooked movie; in fact, it's become a kind of cult classic.

So my nominee is The Matchmaker, a great 1997 comedy starring Janeane Garofalo, Milo O'Shea, Denis Leary & David O'Hara.
It was filmed mainly in Ireland, and it's very funny - I've probably seen it at least 30 times.

It's definitely worth renting on Netflix...especially if you love Ireland.

This chilling NRA ad calls on it's members to save America by fighting liberals

Vox.com
June 29, 2017

A recently released TV ad from the National Rifle Association starring right-wing pundit Dana Loesch comes THIS close to calling for a civil war against liberals.

Here is a full description of Loesch's rant.
Bear in mind that these words are overlaid over ominous images of protest and street violence.

"They use their media to assassinate real news.
They use their schools to teach children that their president is another Hitler
They use their movie stars and singers and comedy shows and award shows to repeat their narrative over and over again.
And then they use their ex-president to endorse 'the resistance'.

All to make them march.
Make them protest.
Make them scream racism and sexism and xenophobia and homophobia.
To smash windows, burn cars, shut down interstates and airports, bully and terrorize the
law-abiding - until the only option left is for the police to do their jobs and stop the madness.

And when that happens, they'll use it as an excuse for their outrage.
The only way we stop this, the only way we save our country and our freedom, is to fight this violence of lies with the clenched fist of truth.

I'm the National Rifle Association of America - And I'm freedom's safest place."

Five changes Republicans might make to healthcare bill

The Hill
Tuesday, July 4, 2017

Senate Republican leaders are laboring to secure 50 votes for an ObamaCare repeal bill after being forced to delay the legislation before the July Fourth recess.

Leaders likely sent some updated proposals to the Congressional Budget Office for analysis before leaving town, but Senate Republicans have yet to lock in a new agreement.

Every tweak would have consequences, but here are five changes that could be made to the bill:

KEEPING A TAX ON HIGH EARNERS
GOP senators are openly debating whether to keep a tax on high earners that was created to help pay for ObamaCare.

BOOSTING SUBSIDIES
If the investment tax is kept, the savings will likely be used to provide larger subsidies to help low-income people afford health insurance.

THE CRUZ AMENDMENT
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is pitching an amendment that would allow insurers to sell plans that don't comply with ObamaCare regulations, so long as they also sell plans that comply with those rules.
Cruz says his "Consumer Freedom Amendment" would lower premiums by giving insurers a path around the regulations.

MORE OPIOID MONEY
McConnell last week gave moderate Republicans Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va) $45 billion in additional funding to combat the opioid crisis.

MEDICAID CHANGES
Centrist GOP senators have balked at the proposed Medicaid changes in the bill, and they're backed-up by their home-state governors, who accepted federal funding under the Affordable Care Act to extend Medicaid coverage to millions of additional people.

Worst theme song for a TV series?

Denis Leary starred in the comedy-drama series Rescue Me (2004-2011), about firefighters, that ran on the FX network.
The action scenes were great, as were the comedy scenes when they weren't fighting fires.

The theme song, however, was a truly awful heavy metal song with some guy screaming unintelligible lyrics.

What's your favorite line or lines from the movie "Airplane" (1980)?

STEWARDESS
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your stewardess speaking.
We regret any inconvenience the sudden cabin movement might have caused.
This is due to periodic air pockets we encountered.
There is no reason to become alarmed and we hope you enjoy the rest of your flight.
By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?
