I got an e-mail from Sen. Al Franken late this afternoon

December 21, 2017

Dear Richard,

Thank you for contacting my office. I appreciate hearing from you.

I have announced that I will resign from the Senate. This was a hard decision. But I am confident that Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith will make an excellent United States Senator. She is a dedicated public servant who's worked tirelessly on behalf of Minnesotans and she will continue to bring that spirit to Washington.

It's been the honor of my life serving the people of Minnesota in the Senate for the last 8 years. Minnesota continues to be one of the most civically engaged states in the nation. And I'm so proud that - by listening and learning from your ideas and experiences - I've been able to continue the tradition of finding commonsense solutions to problems that affect our state.

For many of us, the 2016 election represented a very real threat to not just the advances we made during the Obama Administration, but also to our neighbors, friends, and family members who are at risk of being harmed by the dangerous policies of this administration. In the face of this, I am proud to see how many Minnesotans have joined me in defending the progress we've made.

As we look ahead toward the next fight, it's important that we remember how far we've come. When I joined the Senate in 2009, people who are gay or lesbian were outlawed from serving openly in the military, same sex marriage was illegal in all but a handful of states, people could actually be denied health coverage because of an illness, and families were much more vulnerable to lenders who could issue mortgage loans without taking any meaningful steps to see if a consumer could repay them. We have made real progress that we should be proud of.

Senator Paul Wellstone - whose seat I have been so honored to hold-used to say that politics isn't about winning or losing - it's about improving people's lives. And over the last 8 years, that's what we've done. We've stood up for what we know is right, worked hard to find common ground, and made people's lives better.

Today, people are more engaged in the political process than I have ever experienced in my career. From the Women's Marches across the country to defeating efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, people are raising their voices. The passion I've seen this year makes me confident that - despite the significant challenges we face - progress is still possible.

Thank you for contacting me. I look forward to working with you - as a citizen and activist - to make life better for Minnesotans and people across this country.

Sincerely,

Signature

Al Franken
United States Senator

The Winter Solstice is tomorrow........12-21-2017 at 10:28 cst

The days leading up to it have been the darkest in this country's history
Tomorrow starts with more light, time to put the darkness at bay
Time to shine more light on the cockroaches and make them scurry
Time to squash them and make them feel the pain as the birds tear at their flesh
It is time to shine the light and make them pay for their work in darkness

Science Fiction and the Republican Party

Are science fiction writers Prophets?? Do some of them have a portal into the future?? Perhaps!!
Over the years I have read many science fiction books about the takeover of the world by corporations and robots.
The authors and titles escape me. Most of them state that robots are better suited for work because they do not demand wages, no benefits and can be shut down when not needed. Corporations are better because they can see the big picture and are not concerned with petty little people concerns.
This new tax bill makes this perfectly clear, the aim of the republicans is to make the masses obsolete. More money to corporations will allow them to replace workers with robots. As stated in another DU post.
At some point in the future corporations will control the world as we know it with the help of robots

I called repub Tom Emmer's DC office

The people who answer the phone are not allowed to tell the caller where Emmer stands on issues.
During the course of the call I asked to speak to someone with power to answer my questions. Told everyone was busy.
I asked how many people were in the office at this time.

I was told I could not have that information because it fell under NATIONAL SECURITY

Republicans will do and say anything to not answer your questions

I have been running some numbers...more numbers.....adding more numbers

Single making $40,000 per year for 2017 and 2018

tax bill for 2017 would be $3488
tax bill for 2018 would be $3360
$128

less than $2.50 per week...........such a HUGE windfall

Married couple making $60,000 (medium income). 2017 taxes. $60,000 minus $20,800 equals $39,200. $1905 (10%) plus $3023 (15%) total $4928 for 2017. $60,000 minus $24,000 equals $36,000 times 12% equals $4320 for difference of $608. Better. Less than $11.75 per week. Another huge windfall.

Married With Children. With 7 children because Tom thinks everyone should have 7 children. Making $90,000. $90,000 minus $12,700 equals $77,3000 minus $28,350 equals $48,950. $1905 (10%) plus $4485 (15%) equals $ 6390 2017 tax bill. $90,000 minus $24,000 equals $66,000 times 12% equals $7920 2018 tax bill. Difference of +$1530. Adding in the child tax credit for 2017 would reduce the tax bill to $0. For 2018 the tax bill would be $0. Nothing gained from the new tax cut.

Trump company signs another deal with foreign developer and breaks another Trump promise

https://www.rawstory.com/2017/12/trump-company-signs-another-deal-with-foreign-developer-and-breaks-another-trump-promise/

MNC Land, a Trump Organization partner, entered into a preliminary agreement with Posco E&C Indonesia on the first phase of development of a luxury resort, reported McClatchy.

South Korea’s public pension fund owns 10.88 percent of Posco, according to an independent auditor’s report, and the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority owns 2.38 percent.

The president promised before his inauguration that Trump Organization had agreed not to engage in any new foreign deals or new transactions with a foreign entity, and he placed his holdings in a trust he can draw on for his “exclusive benefit” at any time.

McClatchy previously reported in September that a major construction company owned by the Chinese government was awarded a $32-million contract to build a six-lane road for the Trump World Golf Club Dubai project.
