It was meant to be a tribute to the former prime minister and soon-to-retire MP, but the Conservative Party's #ThankYouStephenHarper hashtag took on a sarcastic and sometimes nasty turn overnight.

Initially, the hashtag was used as intended — earnestly by those who wanted to acknowledge his leadership and wish him well as he leaves politics.

However, as the night went on, most of the tweets were sarcastic in nature, pointing to what his opponents see as his failings in office.

I count myself among the many silent liberals who have largely kept their feelings on Bernie versus Hillary to themselves—partly because each speaks to me in different ways. But largely because, faced with the specter of a hateful orange man suffering from personality disorders that should have been disqualifying being elected president, the war between the Bernie people and Hillary people always felt like a luxury I couldn’t afford. It’s not that I don’t care which of them is the Democratic nominee. It’s just that I care far more about staving off the apocalypse. Also, my response to the very existence of Donald Trump as a serious contender for the presidency has been one of anger. I am angry almost always. Pouring more kerosene on the anger strikes me as pointless.

That said, I have been taken up short by the number of comments and scoldings I have faced, from close friends and casual acquaintances alike, for voicing even a hint of support for one or the other in recent months. The tone hasn’t merely been dismissive and furious; the message beneath has almost universally been that I am a moron.

The 2016 campaign has been focused on rage. Donald Trump’s cunning redirection of his supporters’ economic and racial fury into electoral support has been well-documented. But the fury on the progressive end of the spectrum has been harder to pin down. Some of us on the left seem to be suffering from many of the same symptoms we deride in Trump supporters: outrage with the political process; over-identification with our anger and under-identification with our commonalities; and a pervasive sense that anyone who doesn’t agree with us suffers from debilitating false consciousness.

Toronto police and the Drug Squad have been raiding a series of marijuana dispensaries in the city since noon on Thursday.

Through the investigation, called Project Claudia, members of the Toronto police drug squad and front line officers, in partnership with the City of Toronto, have issued a series of search and arrest warrants, according to Toronto police.

“The project targeted various locations that have been identified as trafficking in marijuana outside of the marijuana-for-medical-use regulations,” said Const. Caroline de Kloet.

Canna Clinic, which appears to have been spared the raids so far, sees customers lining up as early as 9:30 a.m. on weekends, Hodgins said.

Canna Clinic kept up a buzzing business amid the raids up and down the street Thursday afternoon.

Mayor John Tory did not respond to request for comments on the raids Thursday but the mayor talked about “these so-called dispensaries, which are bogus” on CP24 the previous night.

“You know what they are? They are the people who were chased out of Vancouver when they brought in a licensing system and they all said that’s no problem we’ll go down to Toronto,” Tory said.

“They’re conducting activities that are not within the law and I just think we can’t have them popping up on every street corner and near schools and messing up the livelihood trying to be earned by small business.”

Gord Downie, the lead singer and lyricist of the iconic Canadian rock band the Tragically Hip, announced this morning he has terminal brain cancer, but still plans to join his bandmates of more than 30 years for a summer tour.

The band posted the news of Downie's illness on its website this morning and their band manager will release more details at a press conference at Sunnybrook Hospital at 11 a.m.

Despite the diagnosis, The Hip announced it will "dig deep" and hit the road together this summer. The details of that tour should be released later this week, according to the band.

"This feels like the right thing to do now, for Gord, and for all of us," group members said in their statement. "What we in The Hip receive, each time we play together, is a connection; with each other; with music and it's magic; and during the shows, a special connection with all of you, our incredible fans."

The Tragically Hip's frontman has long established himself as one of the country's greatest songwriters, his lyrics giving a voice to Canada's land, its history and, at times, its official winter sport.

The group of traveling filmmaker/photographers were caught on camera disturbing the delicate ecosystem of Yellowstone’s iconic Grand Prismatic Spring for the sake of a few pictures this past weekend, and now they’re paying the price.

To paraphrase an old saying, “hell hath no fury like the Internet’s scorn,” and the Internet is pissed at the filmmakers and photographers who make up the group High On Life SundayFundayz. During a trip to Yellowstone last weekend, the foursome ignored the posted signs and decided to hop off the boardwalk and take a stroll on the largest hot spring in North America.

The perpetrators were initially unidentified, but the Internet quickly tracked down the High On Life team after they posted (and subsequently deleted) some of the images they were capturing during their walk on the spring.

The Peel Regional Police officer who asked Jermaine Carby for his identification minutes before the Brampton man was shot dead by police wanted Carby’s name and date of birth because he was carding him, a coroner’s inquest heard Thursday.

During lengthy and sometimes tense questioning by Faisal Mirza, the lawyer representing Carby’s family, Const. Jason Senechal admitted he had no investigative reason to ask Carby for his personal information.

Passengers in a car stopped for a traffic infraction — this vehicle's licence plate was said to be obscured and its headlights were out — are not required to provide personal information to police. Under questioning, Senechal agreed he was not seeking a suspect who fit Carby’s description, and had no reason to believe the car he was in was connected to a crime. The street check was “a dominant reason” why he asked for Carby’s information, Senechal said.

When asked by Mirza if he read or watched the news, Senechal said: “Honestly, no. I watch sports highlights.”

Ongoing carding investigations by Star since 2010 have shown that, in Toronto, the practice disproportionately affects black and brown men. According to six years of data obtained by the Star last year, black people in Brampton were three times more likely to be street checked by Peel police than white people.

Asked by Mirza if he personally lived in Peel region, Senechal declined to say, agreeing he felt some discomfort disclosing that information.

“So, you can understand why, when you asked an African-Canadian passenger in a vehicle for their name and their date of birth, while they are sitting there quietly, it might be offensive to them?”

After a long pause, Senechal replied that he could.

Senechal was also questioned about his response to health information displayed on the in-car computer when Senechal ran Carby’s name.

The computer showed Carby, 33, suffered from mental instability and had suicidal tendencies — the record would have been displayed on Senechal’s screen reading “***Mental Health***.”

“Subject attempted to disarm officer. Threatened suicide, wanted police to shoot him,” the record said, referring to an incident between Carby and Toronto police just one month before his death, which resulted in Carby being hospitalized.

Jurors heard Senechal returned to speak to Carby roughly 30 seconds after seeing Carby’s mental health history on his in-car screen. By then, two backup officers, including Vasquez, had arrived on scene.

Since there was no urgency to speak to Carby — who was still compliant and calm in the car — Mirza asked Senechal why he didn’t make a plan with his colleagues, considering the high risk Carby posed to himself and others.

“You didn’t sit and take five minutes to discuss with them the plan of approach in relation to Mr. Carby, correct?

“No, I did not,” Senechal said.
