Best headline ever? Man acquitted in romantic bear-spray squabble

A San Francisco man was acquitted Thursday of breaking into his ex-fiancée’s house and assaulting her new lover before getting sprayed with bear mace by a shirtless neighbor.

Jurors deliberated for just three hours before finding Christoper Hall, 31, innocent of the two felonies.

The “chaotic and confusing” night began on March 25 when Hall broke off his plans to marry his 34-year-old fiancée, said Deputy Public Defender Phoenix Streets.

The two had met in a hacky-sack circle in early February and announced plans to marry just two weeks later, Streets said. But the relationship quickly turned tumultuous, Streets said, and the pair broke up on March 25.

Hall took his few possessions and moved out of his fiancée’s home and into a tree at Mclaren Park. But as Hall climbed the tree and attempted to sleep that first night, he became cold and returned home, Streets said.

Hall’s former lover was not there, so Hall “curled up under a tarp under the woman’s backyard bushes,” Streets said.

Around 10 p.m., the woman, who had been at the movies with a “new male friend,” returned home. The man “happened to be a former U.S. Marine with extensive combat training,” Streets said.

As the woman and her new friend talked in the kitchen, they heard noises outside and decided to investigate. The woman armed herself with a knife while the friend grabbed a frying pan, Streets said.

A woman fell to her death from the Texas Giant rollercoaster Friday night

A woman fell to her death from the Texas Giant rollercoaster Friday night at Six Flags Over Texas as horrified fellow passengers watched. The Arlington amusement park confirmed the death but released few details beyond reporting that its medical staff and city paramedics had responded immediately. The victim’s name was not released.

Six Flags officials offered their condolences to the woman’s family as investigators began to study the cause of the accident, which occurred after 6:30 p.m. Although the ride was closed, the park remained open through the evening.

Early attention was beginning to focus on witnesses’ reports that the woman’s safety restraint may have come undone. Carmen Brown of Arlington was waiting in line as the victim was being secured in for the ride. She said she believed that the woman’s son was on the ride with her.
Brown said the woman had expressed concern to a park employee that she was not secured correctly in her seat.

“He was basically nonchalant,” Brown said. “He was, like, ‘As long as you heard it click, you’re fine.’ Hers was the only one that went down once, and she didn’t feel safe. But they let her still get on the ride.”

She said the victim fell out of the ride as it made a sudden maneuver.
“The lady basically tumbled over,” she said. “We heard her screaming. We were, like, ‘Did she just fall?’”

Investigators were interviewing witnesses on the ride, some of whom reported that the woman had been thrown from the rollercoaster as it rounded a turn. Arlington police declined to comment on the accident.

Calvin and Hobbes Documentary Coming in November- "Dear Mr.Watterson"

http://vimeo.com/5708115
A documentary dedicated to the legacy of Calvin and Hobbes is coming on November 15. We’ve embedded the trailer above, you can sign up for email updates about upcoming showings.

Artist Bill Watterson decided to end his beloved Calvin and Hobbes comic strip on New Year’s Eve of 1995. He avoided licensing his creations to toy makers or movie makers, but a Kickstarter documentary will examine his legacy. Here’s more about the film:

It has now been more than a decade since the end of the Calvin & Hobbes era. Bill Watterson has kept an extremely low profile during this time, living a very private life outside of Cleveland, Ohio. Despite his quiet lifestyle, Mr. Watterson is remembered and appreciated daily by fans who still enjoy his amazing collection of work … This film is not a quest to find Bill Watterson, or to invade his privacy. It is an exploration to discover why his ‘simple’ comic strip made such an impact on so many readers in the 80s and 90s, and why it still means so much to us today.

Are you excited about the documentary? Melville House offered this tribute to Watterson’s artistic legacy:

Walt Disney built a media empire through his own drawings and re-tellings of classic fairytales; consequently, his is now one of the most recognizable names on the planet. But far too many of those same people are ignorant to the same amount of happiness and joy contained in Watterson’s static images that re-tell and unravel philosophical aphorisms, mathematical theories, and, of course, the wondrously complicated science that is a child’s imagination.

Nate Silver Leaving New York Times For ESPN, Keith Olbermann's Show

New York Times media writer Brian Stelter has broken a big bit of news on this Friday night: Nate Silver, sabermetrician and electoral seer, is leaving the Times and heading to ESPN. He's taking FiveThirtyEight with him, too. And yet that's not the juiciest bit.

Stelter also reports that Silver will "most likely be a regular contributor" to Keith Olbermann's new ESPN2 show, due to debut before August is through, and that he will have "a role" with ABC News "in political years."

Silver's time as a full-time baseball analyst was largely over when he joined the Times in 2010, but he wrote for Baseball Prospectus from 2003 to 2009, developing the PECOTA player projection system while with the publication.

Silver ought to liven it up and bring people with him.
This will give KO's show a real boost.

McDonnell rents Henrico house to VA health commissioner

Cash-strapped Gov. Bob McDonnell has found a way to defray part of his monthly real estate expenses on the millions in property he owns -- by renting his western Henrico home to his hand-picked state health commissioner.

Dr. Cynthia C. Romero, who took over as state health commissioner in January, has been renting the McDonnells' $835,000 home in the tony Wyndham residential community, a McDonnell spokesman confirmed.

The details of the rental agreement were unclear. Based on the current mortgage rate and loan for the property, a mortgage payment would be about $2,800 per month.

News that the governor entered into a financial relationship with a top state official under his supervision comes as federal and state investigators probe the gifts the first family and McDonnell have received during his time in office and his relationship with Star Scientific CEO Jonnie Williams Sr.
