Question about Americans fighting in Israel

We were wondering in this subthread what would have happened if a U.S. citizen had joined the Irgun in the 30s and 40s. Would it have been legal under U.S. law? Would they have been prosecuted?

Solar plane to set out to cross U.S. in early May

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California (Reuters) - The first crossing of the United States by a solar-powered plane is expected to start in just over a month, its creators said on Thursday, as they make final preparations for an attempt two years from now at the first round-the-world flight without any fuel.

Swiss pilot Bertrand Piccard and project co-founder and pilot Andre Borschberg, whose Solar Impulse made its first intercontinental flight from Spain to Morocco last June, aim for their plane to take off from near San Francisco in early May and land at New York's John F. Kennedy airport about two months later.

With the wingspan of a jumbo jet and weighing the same as a small car, the Solar Impulse is just a test model for the team as they build a new aircraft they hope will circumnavigate the globe in 2015.

The project began in 2003 with a 10-year budget of 90 million euros ($112 million) and has involved engineers from Swiss lift maker Schindler and research aid from Belgian chemicals group Solvay -- backers who want to test new materials and technologies while also gaining brand recognition.

NATO air strike kills two children, nine suspected Taliban in Afghanistan

Source: Reuters

GHAZNI, Afghanistan - A NATO helicopter supporting Afghan security forces killed two children and nine suspected Taliban fighters on Saturday, officials said, a month after President Hamid Karzai forbade troops to call for foreign air support.

The deaths reopen an often heated debate between those who blame NATO air strikes for civilian deaths and others who argue that NATO air support is vital for protecting vulnerable Afghan security forces.

Afghan police had been patrolling in the southeastern town of Ghazni when they came under attack by insurgents, NATO spokesman Major Adam Wojack said.

"International Security Assistance Forces supported the Afghan unit in contact by engaging the insurgent forces with helicopter-delivered direct fire," he said, adding the coalition was investigating reports of civilian casualties.

Dufnering

The new term was coined after a photo of Jason Dufner began circulating online of him visiting the Salesmanship Youth and Family Centers as the defending champion of the HP Byron Nelson Championship. Shortly after Dufner’s peers came off the golf course at the Shell Houston Open on Thursday, the photo quickly spread across Twitter.

This post from Keegan Bradley had over 1,500 retweets:

Haha I don't know what to say. This is the best picture ever.

If imitation is flattery, Dufner should be feeling quite good about himself. Rory McIlroy was the first to share his imitation, which he termed #Dufnering in a Twitter hashtag:

This was quickly followed by more #Dufnering tweets from players and fans alike, with nearly 5,000 mentions on Twitter through 9:30 a.m. ET Friday morning and a place on the USA Trending Topics list.

Black caucus chair to Obama: No more Ms. Nice Guy

By William Douglas
McClatchy Newspapers
Mar. 22, 2013

WASHINGTON - Rep. Marcia Fudge didn’t hide her feelings about the fact that President Barack Obama has not yet chosen any African-Americans to fill open high-level positions in his second term.

“The people you have chosen to appoint in this new term have hardly been reflective of this country’s diversity,” the chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus wrote in a terse letter to Obama this month. “Their ire is compounded by the overwhelming support you’ve received from the African-American community.”

The letter’s tone and tenor typifies the blunt, hard-charging style of Fudge, an Ohio Democrat, and signals a shift in how the 43-member caucus of African-American Senate and House members will approach the nation’s first African-American president in his final years in office.

-snip-

Over the last four years, many CBC members held their tongues, quietly grumbled, or delicately expressed frustration about a seeming inability to get their message to Obama.

Their frustration is amplified by the time it’s been since the caucus has met with the president: It will be two years May 12. Obama met with leaders of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in January and proclaimed revamping immigration laws as a top legislative priority. Fudge says she expects the countdown to end soon, though she doesn’t have a meeting date from the White House.
