Atlantic City under water as Sandy aims at NJ

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. —Rising waters put most of Atlantic City under water Monday as the approach of Hurricane Sandy flooded towns up and down the New Jersey shore, knocked out power to thousands and left some people stranded in water-surrounded homes, forcing rescues. Emergency officials said they expected conditions to get much worse at evening high tide.

"The city's basically flooded," said Willie Glass, the city's public safety director. "Most of the city is under water."

Fire officials in neighboring Pleasantville reported two rescues and said more were under way as residents who stayed put sought to escape flood-encircled homes.

"It's going to be a slog through the history books but we're doing OK so far," Glass said.

Live streaming news for hurricane

I'm trying to find an online live news feed in case our power goes out. All I have found so far is a Ustream feed for a station in Connecticut. I'd like to find one in New York or New Jersey.

Any suggestions?

Should I risk driving to work tomorrow?

I live in Jersey City and have a construction job going in Trenton, NJ. Should I risk driving to work tomorrow? Tuesday?

And no, my boss is no help. He's a Ron Paul fanatic. I'm sure he'll tell me to go for it.

Truck runs over sunbathing reality star’s head

What's an appropriate gift to send after accidentally running over a woman's head with a truck? Well, if you're 20-year-old Taylor Greer, you bring flowers and an apology.

The victim was 23-year-old Brittany Taltos, best known as a reality television star on Jersey Shore and ABC's Bachelor Pad. Taltos was sunbathing in her own front yard when Greer's Chevrolet Silverado ran over her head.

"I honestly thought I was going to die," Taltos told The Ledger . Amazingly, Taltos remained conscious throughout the ordeal and received 15 stitches after being rushed to a nearby hospital at the University of Florida.

A standard Chevrolet Silverado weighs approximately 4,500 pounds.

The Gainesville, Florida Fire Department says the point of impact left a noticeable depression in the front lawn. Talto's roommate said she had "visible tire tracks" on her face after the accident.

Hurricane Sandy may slam into U.S. East Coast as Halloween week "Frankenstorm"

Source: CBS News

October 25, 2012

An unusual nasty mix of a hurricane and a winter storm that forecasters are now calling "Frankenstorm" is likely to blast most of the East Coast next week, focusing the worst of its weather mayhem around New York City and New Jersey.

U.S. government forecasters on Thursday upped the odds of a major weather mess, now saying there's a 90 percent chance that the East will get steady gale-force winds, heavy rain, flooding and maybe snow starting Sunday and stretching past Halloween on Wednesday. Meteorologists say it is likely to cause $1 billion in damages.

The storm is a mix of Hurricane Sandy, now in the Caribbean as a Category 2 storm, as well as an early winter storm in the West and a blast of arctic air from the North. They're predicted to collide and park over the country's most populous coastal corridor and reach as far inland as Ohio.

The hurricane part of the storm is likely to come ashore somewhere in New Jersey on Tuesday morning, said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecaster Jim Cisco. But this is a storm that will affect a far wider area, so people all along the East have to be wary, Cisco said.

Sarah Palin accuses Obama of "shuck and jive shtick"

Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin released a statement on her Facebook page accusing President Obama of engaging in "shuck and jive shtick" regarding last month's attack in Benghazi, Libya.

"Why the lies? Why the cover up? Why the dissembling about the cause of the murder of our ambassador on the anniversary of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil? We deserve answers to this. President Obama's shuck and jive shtick with these Benghazi lies must end," Palin wrote.

For those who aren't familiar with the phrase, "shuck and jive" is a racially-tinged expression. According to the user-submitted Urban Dictionary, the term "originally referred to the intentionally misleading words and actions that African-Americans would employ in order to deceive racist Euro-Americans in power, both during the period of slavery and afterwards."

Earlier this week, conservative pundit Ann Coulter inspired outrage when she called President Obama a "retard" following his Florida debate with GOP challenger Mitt Romney. An athlete with Down Syndrome wrote an open letter to Coulter in response. "Come on Ms. Coulter," he wrote. "You aren't dumb and you aren't shallow. So why are you continually using a word like the R-word as an insult?"
