state by state speak your mind about...north dakota

i did not believe in north dakota until about 10 years ago
i thought it was a fantasy to even out the flag or something
i live in the touristy part of florida and we see every tag from every state
never seen a north dakota tag
but my dad went to work there and he says its really a place so i have no choice but to believe him
food processing and farming are the high priority jobs
when they admitted the dakotas as states they intentionally shuffled the papers so as to not know which was admitted first
dakota rivalry
we have the native people, scandanavians germans
there are no real tourist attractions there
i hope someone on du can confirm the existence of north dakota

state by state speak your mind about...new york

awww new york the big apple
well the big apple is in new york
a state with serious duality a large populous state with americas most populated city within
when you say new york you usually mean the city but it really is so much more
lets start with the city though.one of americas oldest and most definitive places and histories
bought for a robbers pittance by the dutch from natives
the natives selling rights to land of their neighbors
how much more USA does this story get? the imprint of new york city is all over this world
madison avenue homogenized us starting in the 50's and the big 3 networks finished the job via hollywood outsourcing
wall street can cripple a government half a world away over a bad sandwich at lunch
and we would be naked without new yorks garment districts (not really but models would work less and do we really need tyra banks and naiomi campbell with free time?)
and then you leave the city and there are villages and farms and mountains and rolling hills
most steeped in the gestation of this continent a historically magic tour of history
we are a better nation for new york
what a place!

state by state speak your mind about...new mexico

when i think of new mexico i picture a john wayne movie set
tall buttes and mesas in the distance and desert scrub all around
i think it may have some of that but not as much as some of its neighbors
its a rocky mountain state with snow peaks and such
every type of animal is represented there from chipmonks to cougars
pretty much annexed from mexico in the 1840s wars
in 1861 the csa claimed it as a territory
because of its border status it has had a latin influence throughout its existence and 46% of its population is descended from spanish colonists
it has the largest native population of any state except alaska
new mexico has archeological sites that go back to the mogollon and the anasazi (1200 bc)
history and nature combined to make new mexico a great place
i cant wait to go

state by state speak your mind about...new jersey

or as we will refer to her throughout "jersey"
jersey is an interesting state. sinatra was from hoboken
the battle of trenton was an important revolutionary war battle
jersey has been getting a low class black eye in the media with a lot of low rent "reality" shows
but thats not really jersey at all i mean you have drunk assholes in your state too i bet
jersey loves a toll road
jersey is the garden state and once you get away from the coast it is kind of farmy
jersey and jersey residents have helped shape who we are today by shaping our common past
i have never been to new jersey but if i get the chance to visit.....fugetaboudit

state by state speak your mind about...new hampshire

i will start by saying i know nothing about new hampshire except is was named for old hampshire
so as i write i will do some research and tell the interesting bits
it was once its own country after seceding from great britain
it holds americas first primary
it has many industries from textiles to logging
it has voted for dems for president only 6 times 3 of them during fdr's terms
new hampshire seems to be the epitome of the "yankee" independence
new hampshire is another place i want to see
and remember du "live free or die"

state by state speak your mind about...montana

montana is a place i have never been to
my wifes sister has a cabin there for trout fishing and hunting but i have not gone yet
when i think of montana i see a cowboy on his horse moving across a wide open plain under a huge open sky
i have learned the state has great outdoors action from the fishing mentioned to hiking birding and wildflower watching
there are fabulous parks there yellowstone and glacier national parks are both there
the little big horn happened here (i admit as a native this one makes me smile)
only 2 states have more microbreweries
montana is on my list of places to visit and hopefully soon

as a side note if you are following these and wondered about the days i miss recently i have my late brothers daughter and her new husband visiting florida
my fine state
for the first time and i apologize for the delays as i show them why florida in fact does NOT suck
i am continuing through to the territories but i sometimes may be a bit late as life intrudes

state by state speak your mind about ...Missouri

i have friends there
it isnt southern but it seems like it is
politically it has been a bellweather state
st louis is the gateway to the west with a very nice arch to prove it
it also was a very important shipping stop on the mississippi river
historically Missouri has had a checkered past
the Missouri compromise fed into the civil war and the mormon wars exiled citizens and confiscated their lands
Missouri has led the way on a lot of american history
the pony express started there and so does the oregon trail
these opened the west to us all
its the show me state

state by state speak your mind about...mississippi

i have been to mississippi a lot
she is a glorious place from the coastal bayous of the south to the piney woods of the north
she leads the world in farm raised catfish i dont know if you are a catfish eater but i am and farm raised catfish has a more palatable meat
so yay catfish farmers!
she also is a major producer to this day of cotton
she has played hostess to man for well over 10000 years and has extensive earthworks relating to these ancient
there is a darkness to her also that cannot be overlooked
in 1860 as war loomed every other human in mississippi was a slave
over half of the population
but at the turn of the next century over 2 out of every 3 landholders was an african american
this is one of the places made sacred by the blood of martyrs in the civil rights movement
the place the blues were born in and where elvis is from
its where you can trade your soul at midnight at a crossroads in the middle of nowhere
mississippi is still part of the past but also part of the future
go to mississippi and find out

state by state speak your mind about...minnesota

i have met amny minnesotans and they are all so far good folks
the foods are a little different (think lutkefiske)
the land is beautiful and the state is the land on 10,000 lakes
thats a lot of lakes
minnesota is 80% as old as the earth
that is older than any other place
it has always been there
many huge corporations are headquarted in minnesota
many great writers and musicians also come from minnesota
they have the 10 largest gdp among the states
logging mining and agriculture all are extensive
as is the tourism business from its many waterays and lakes
minnesota has a lot going on
