Fla. man hits employees with live bearded dragon lizard

A South Florida reptile store owner is facing battery and animal cruelty charges after authorities say he struck employees with a bearded dragon lizard and put it in his mouth.
video surveillance captured Siegel throwing the animal in the air and swinging it in the air multiple times. He also hit employees with the bearded dragon multiple times and threw Gatorade on them, the report said.

The reptile store made national headlines in 2012 when a man died after consuming dozens of insects and worms during a roach-eating contest at the shop.

Portland police adopt revolutionary new policy regarding mentally ill suspects — just back off

Hot damn! and about time, too.

According to the new policy, police “are not expected to diagnose mental or emotional conditions, but are expected to recognize behaviors that are indicative of persons affected by mental illness or in crisis, with a special emphasis on those that suggest potential violence and/or danger.”

If officers judge that the person is suffering from a mental illness or is in an acute state of crisis, instead of confronting them, they are strongly encouraged to disengage and reevaluate the situation with the assistance of a supervisor or a member of the Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team (ECIT).

“Non-engagement or disengagement are tactics that can be used if the member determines that contact or continued contact with the person will result in an undue safety risk to the person, the public and/or members,” the new policy states.

“A police report will be written documenting the following: details of the call; reasons for non-engagement or disengagement; actions taken to deescalate the situation; actions taken to promote safety; follow up plans and referrals made, and whether the address is flagged” in a database containing the names of people who have previously had mental episodes.

Sea Kale....we explore the science behind the new wave of seaweed farms springing up off the New England coast, and discover seaweed's starring role in the peopling of the Americas.

The story of seaweed will take us from a medicine hut in southern Chile to a high-tech seaweed nursery in Stamford, Connecticut, and from biofuels to beer, as we discover the surprising history and bright future of marine vegetables. Along the way, we uncover the role kelp can play in supporting U.S. fishermen, cleaning up coastal waters, and even helping make salmon farms more sustainable.

US Army report calls for ‘military support’ of Israeli energy grab

A new report by the US Army War College’s Strategic Studies Institute emphasises the need for “US security and military support” to its key allies in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly Israel, over access to recent vast discoveries of regional oil and gas.

The Army study, released earlier in December 2014, concludes that extensive US military involvement “may prove essential in managing possible future conflict” in case of “an eruption of natural resource conflict in the East Mediterranean,” due to huge gas discoveries in recent years.

Visible US engagement is also necessary to ward off the regional encroachment of “emerging powers and potential new peace brokers such as Russia - which already entertains a strong interest in East Mediterranean gas developments - and notably China.”

The new US Army report argues that these hydrocarbon discoveries are of “tremendous economic and geostrategic significance,” not just for its allies, but for the United States itself. Israel especially stands to “gain considerably from their newly discovered gas wealth” in terms of cost-effective energy for domestic consumption and revenues from gas exports.
US interests are to minimise the risk of conflict between its core allies, while maximising their capacity to exploit these resources.

Jeb Bush Resigns as George W. Bush’s Brother

In the strongest sign to date that he intends to seek the 2016 Republican Presidential nomination, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush has officially resigned his position as George W. Bush’s brother.

In an official statement, George W. Bush said that he “understands and supports” his former brother’s decision.

“If I were him, I would no longer be related to me either,” he said.

The Queen Just Honored a Politician Who Believes Hurricane Katrina Was Caused by Gay People

The Queen has given an MBE (or Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) to a Northern Irish politician who vocally blamed both Hurricane Katrina and AIDS on LGBT people, prompting complaints from activists, along with questions about how commonplace homophobia in the country really is.
Maurice Mills is the Democratic Unionist Party councillor for Ballymena, and was chosen for the award on the basis of "services to local government."

The councillor's local newspaper — the Ballymena Times — describes him as a committed born-again Christian who has "courted controversy in his long career in local politics, but was always known at a local level as a hard-working community representative with a keen appreciation of the need to keep in touch with the party's grass roots."

In 2005, Mills reportedly said that Hurricane Katrina — a natural disaster that resulted in the deaths of at least 1,833 people in the US — was God's revenge for an annual festival in New Orleans.

"The media failed to report that the hurricane occurred just two days prior to the annual homosexual event called the Southern Decadence Festival, which the previous year had attracted an estimated 125,000 people," Mills said. "Surely, this is a warning to nations where such wickedness is increasingly promoted and practiced."

Halliburton revealed....."without Halliburton there could be no war or occupation"

This is actually a book, which I got after reading an article about it.
Thought some others would be interested.

Halliburton’s Army: How a Well-Connected Texas Oil Company Revolutionized the Way America Makes War - Pratap Chatterjee

Halliburton’s Army is the first book to show, in shocking detail, how Halliburton really does business, in Iraq, and around the world. From its vital role as the logistical backbone of the U.S. occupation in Iraq—without Halliburton there could be no war or occupation—to its role in covering up gang-rape amongst its personnel in Baghdad, Halliburton’s Army is a devastating bestiary of corporate malfeasance and political cronyism.
The book shows how Halliburton won and then lost its contracts in Iraq, what Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld did for it, and who the company paid off in the U.S. Congress.
Also investigates Hallibirton's new home in Dubai, where Halliburton has recently moved its headquarters, and exposes the company’s freewheeling ways: executives leading the high life, bribes, graft, skimming, offshore subsidiaries, and the whole arsenal of fraud. Finally, Chatterjee reveals the human costs of the privatization of American military affairs, which is sustained almost entirely by low-paid unskilled Third World workers who work in incredibly dangerous conditions without any labor protection.

Super PAC set up to elect the prosecutor in the controversial Eric Garner case.

Taking nothing for granted to keep Rep. Michael Grimm’s seat in Republican hands, activists have set up a super PAC to elect Staten Island DA Dan Donovan — the prosecutor in the controversial Eric Garner case.

The People First PAC will be run by GOP operatives Jake Menges and Rob Cole of In The Field Consulting, who have ties to former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and ex-Gov. George Pataki.

Grimm, who was elected to a third term in November despite facing a 20-count federal indictment, announced his resignation last week after pleading guilty to tax fraud.
