A new arrival _GRAPHIC WARNING

Yesterday morning we had a new arrival here:

This was the first picture I managed to take that turned out. When I first saw him, he was still in the birth sack and his mamma had her back leg over the top of his barrel. I had to pull the sack AND mamma's leg off so he could breath.

Even with that set back, he stood and nurse very fast - within an hour! Within two hours he was already cantering around, keeping Mama moving.

Here he is today, dried off and steady on his feet:

The White Lions of the Timbavati

In the greater Kruger National Park area of South Africa, there is no story more legendary than that of the white lions of the Timbavati.

Discovered in the mid-70s these snow white felines are not albino as one might think but simply carry a recessive gene that causes their coats to be white. Amazingly enough, every white lion world wide is ancestrally related to the white lions of the Timbavati.

After mysteriously disappearing for many years they were spotted again in 2006. A great place to see these cats in the wild today is the Motswari Private Game Reserve. They are known as the "Xakubasa Pride", "basa" means "white" in Shangaan. Photographer and field guide Chad Cocking has captured some truly breathtaking images of these rare cats which can be seen below.

A good birding site - Lakeland, Florida, Circle B Bar Reserve

There is a relatively new place, the Circle B Bar Reserve just south of Lakeland, off US 98 on SR 540.

From the county information about the reserve:

Named after a cattle ranch that once existed on this property, Circle B Bar Reserve was jointly acquired by the Polk County Environmental Lands Program and the District to protect the floodplain of the lake and to restore the Banana Creek marsh system. The property is maintained by Polk County. Much of the property had previously been converted to pasture, but in 2005 and 2006, restoration projects were completed to restore much of the original hydrologic function of the lands. As a result of the marsh system restoration project, Circle B is now home to some of the most impressive bird activity on District property. The tremendous bird population includes a variety of wading birds, waterfowl, ospreys and bald eagles. Alligators inhabit Lake Hancock and may be observed at a distance from shore or from a pier. Oak hammock, freshwater marsh, hardwood swamp and the lakeshore are among the unique characteristics of this property.

We've been a few times while visiting my parents who live in the area and the variety of birds is amazing. Osprey, wood stork, American egret, snowy egret, Great and little blue herons, limpkins, moorhen, purple gallinue, turkey, pelicans, blue wing teal ducks, wild turkeys, black ring neck duck, red shoulder hawks, coots, sora, glossy ibis, anhinga, cormorants - and that is just what we saw last Saturday in less than two hours!

Remembering Mom's Clothesline

There is one thing that's left out. We had a long wooden pole (clothes pole) that was used to push the clotheslines up so that longer items (sheets/pants/etc.) didn't brush the ground and get dirty.

You have to be a "certain age" to appreciate this one.... (But you YOUNGER ones can read about "The GOOD ol' days"!!)

I can hear my mother now.....

THE BASIC RULES FOR CLOTHESLINES:
(If you don't even know what clotheslines are, better skip this.)

1. You had to hang the socks by the toes... NOT the top.
2. You hung pants by the BOTTOM/cuffs... NOT the waistbands.
3. You had to WASH the clothesline(s) before hanging any clothes - walk the entire length of each line with a damp cloth around the lines.
4. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and always hang "whites" with "whites," and hang them first.
5. You NEVER hung a shirt by the shoulders - always by the tail! What would the neighbors think?
6. Wash day on a Monday! NEVER hang clothes on the weekend, or on Sunday, for Heaven's sake!
7. Hang the sheets and towels on the OUTSIDE lines so you could hide your "unmentionables" in the middle (perverts & busybodies, y'know!)
8. It didn't matter if it was sub-zero weather... clothes would "freeze-dry."
9. ALWAYS gather the clothes pins when taking down dry clothes! Pins left on the lines were "tacky"!
10. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item did not need two clothes pins, but shared one of the clothes pins with the next washed item.
11. Clothes off of the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the clothes basket, and ready to be ironed.
12. IRONED???!! Well, that's a whole OTHER subject!

Is the "Link" feature button supposed to be working?

In other forums to add a link to a block of text, you highlight the text, click the "link" button, paste the URL into the popup box and click "OK". Then the text that was highlighted becomes an active link.

I've done this a few times since the buttons appeared but frankly, I just assumed the thing worked that way and did not check back on whether or not it showed up.

I just did that in a post and while checking the message, I realized that neither the link OR the highlighted text showed up, even though the code in the message looked correct and matched what was done in the old DU forum by hand.

Here is the text and link as I tried to post:
"Socialism" Not So Negative, "Capitalism" Not So Positive

Here is what shows up between the brackets:
link:http://pewresearch.org/pubs/1583/political-rhetoric-capitalism-socialism-militia-family-values-states-rights|"Socialism" Not So Negative, "Capitalism" Not So Positive

So why is the "link" button not working as it should? Or do I have the function wrong and am I using it incorrectly?

Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) on Mitt Romney - "no compassion"

This afternoon, Rep. James Clyburn was a guest on the Martin Bashir show on MSNBC to talk about the South Carolina primaries. He really laid into Mitt Romney, then talked about how he knew Romney's father.

I'm paraphrasing here: "Mitt Romney got all that inheritance from his Dad but he he got no compassion, and he didn't develop any..."

http://video.msnbc.msn.com/msnbc-live-with-bashir/45947446#45947446

The real ripping into Romney starts about the 5 minute mark and later.
