No Money, No Family, Nowhere to Go
The median age for homeless people is approaching 50, and experts expect that trend to accelerate with the aging of the baby boomers. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development predicted in 2010 that the number of homeless seniors will double between 2010 and 2050, leaving an estimated 95,000 senior citizens without shelter.
How those numbers trickle down to Spokane is hard to quantify because most community counts of homeless people don’t sort results by age that specifically. But several local care providers said they’ve noted an increase in older homeless people.
“It’s alarming how many women I’m seeing who are over 50 in need of housing,” said Johnny Beans’ mother, Stephy Nobles-Beans, who runs Fields of Diamonds House of Blessings, aChristian transitional home for women. “There’s not much out there for you, if you are over a certain age and don’t have a child or a job.”
Nobles-Beans, affectionately called “Mama Beans” by her residents, said earlier this year she was getting anywhere from three to six calls a week from women in need of housing–-either escaping a traumatic situation, such as substance abuse or domestic violence, or simply falling on hard times.
She said many of the women at her facility are newly homeless.
“I’ve got a woman who is living with me right now who is 63 and lost her home because the family member she was living with got into drugs,” she said earlier this year. “What do you do when you’re 63, have no money, nobody and nowhere to go?”
“I grit my teeth and give the ones I can’t take a list of housing options and shelters and I wish them luck,” Nobles-Beans added. “You want to save them all, but I’m doing this out of my own home and can only take a few at a time. I pray for them all.”

Police called to school to investigate 8th grader's 2 dollar bill
The school then called Daneisha’s grandmother, Sharon Kay Joseph, who told them the bill was real and that it was given to her at a convenience store.
Police then went to a bank which verified the authenticity of the bill. Since the bill was made in 1953, the school's counterfeit pen didn't work.
No charges were filed against the middle schooler but her grandmother is outraged and says she had to go hungry that day because the school took her money. The police finally gave Joseph her bill back.
'He brought me my $2 bill back,' Joseph told ABC. 'He didn’t apologize. He should have, and the school should have because they pulled Danesiah out of lunch, and she didn’t eat lunch that day because they took her money.'
'It was very outrageous for them to do it,' Joseph said.
'There was no need for police involvement. They’re charging kids like they’re adults now,' she added.
According to ABC, between the 2013-2014 school year there were 40 Houston students investigated for using allegedly counterfeit money at lunch and that those investigated are disproportionately black and Hispanic.

Cops are profiling cars full of people in pajamas
"Heroin rush hour" has some telltale signs in northern Kentucky, like a car filled with people in their pajamas venturing to Cincinnati around 9 or 10 a.m.
That's what police in Fort Thomas say.
The city's police department recently launched a three-officer Heroin Interdiction Team to get heroin off the roadways, The Kentucky Enquirer reported (http://cin.ci/1UgXQJO).
Sgt. Chris Goshorn said officers have noticed addicts tend to wake up and drive north to nearby Cincinnati for their next fix around 9 or 10 a.m.
With many addicts pooling their gas money together for the trip north, a car full of people in their pajamas can tip investigators to check for an intoxicated driver at the wheel, Officer Derek Faught said.
Of course, a pajama-wearing driver isn't a reason to pull a vehicle over. In order for officers to make a stop, Faught said police need a reason beyond heroin suspicion, such as traffic infractions or not wearing a seat lbelt

Florida police officer has been charged with battery and was fired from his position after a video emerged of him repeatedly striking a woman as she stood handcuffed.

Undersheriff Pat Ivey held a press conference on Thursday, announcing the arrest of 26-year-old police officer Akinyemi Borisade for battery. Borisade was with the force for a year and still within his 18-month probationary period, meaning he could be sacked on the spot.
Ivey said Borisade had an unblemished record up until this point. He also told the media that the situation should have been dealt with differently, as officers are trained to do.
“She’s handcuffed. There are ways that this could have been dealt with without striking her,” he said.

According to investigators, the incident took place at the Duval County Jail late in the afternoon. Mayra Martinez, transported to the jail by Borisade and awaiting booking on a trespassing arrest, kicked out at Borisade twice, arousing his attention. He then moved over to her and repeatedly struck her. Three other officers and a community service officer (in the yellow polo) look on, as well as a fellow arrestee; the incident goes on for some time until another officer intervenes. Following the incident, Martinez slumps to the ground.
While the officers at the scene did not act quickly, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office claims that other employees moved quickly to effect the arrest. During a press conference which can be seen below, Undersheriff Pat Ivey reported that JSO Corrections officers informed superiors upon viewing the security footage, and Borisade was fired and arrested within 24 hours.

The Republican Party’s image, already quite negative, has slipped since last fall. Currently 33% of the public has a favorable impression of the Republican Party, while 62% have an unfavorable view. Unfavorable opinions of the GOP are now as high as at any point since 1992.
In October, 37% viewed the Republican Party favorably and 58% viewed it unfavorably. The decline in favorability since then has largely come among Republicans themselves: In the current survey, 68% of Republicans view their party positively, down from 79% last fall.
Republicans have less favorable view of the GOPBy contrast, public views of the Democratic Party are unchanged since October. Currently, 45% of the public has a favorable impression of the Democratic Party, while 50% have an unfavorable opinion.
The latest national survey by the Pew Research Center, conducted April 12-19 among 2,008 adults, finds that Democrats have a far more favorable impression of their party than Republicans have of theirs. Nearly nine-in-ten Democrats (88%) view their party favorably, which is 20 points higher than Republicans’ ratings of the GOP (68%).
Just 28% of independents view the Republican Party favorably, while 37% say they have a favorable impression of the Democratic Party. Notably, just 43% of Republican-leaning independents view the GOP favorably, while 50% hold a negative opinion of the party.
A quarter of the public has an unfavorable view of both partiesDemocratic-leaning independents, like those who identify as Democrats, have much more positive impressions of the Democratic Party. About six-in-ten (63%) view the party favorably, compared with 32% who have an unfavorable view.

San diego puts jagged rocks beneath overpass where homeless took shelter during storm

April 27, 2016 (San Diego) — Mayor Kevin Faulconer is being rocked by criticism after a homeless advocacy group posted photos on Facebook of sharp, jagged rocks installed by the city of San Diego beneath an overpass where homeless people had been sleeping and taking shelter during storms. San Diego has no year-round homeless shelter and has also been conducting sweeps to confiscate belongings of homeless individuals.
“Let your voices be heard and contact the Mayor to let him know that the current criminalization and anti-homeless policies that are being deployed are the wrong way,” Homelessness News San Diego wrote, also posting the Mayor’s phone number (619-236-6330) and e-mail (kevinfaulconer@sandiego.gov )
Bill Harris, the city’s supervising public information officer, offered this explanation, “"The new landscaping along Imperial Avenue is meant to address safety concerns by neighborhood residents in Sherman Heights," City Beat reports.
Kevin Inman posted that he lives a block from the site. “We have had the police and paramedics out numerous times because of the camps. There are no easy solutions –as a community we need to invest tens of millions of dollars to offer support services, but where is the political will? Instead there is talk of spending $1 billion on a football stadium right in this exact spot.”
Many voiced outrage at the action.
Lori Saldaña, who is running for mayor against Faulconer, has blasted Faulconer for taking punitive action against the homeless instead of offering solutions to homelessness. She posted a video online showing a homeless encampment under the bridge on Imperial Ave. under I-5 taken during a storm shortly before the rocks were installed.

Expensive cut of meat left on BART
The scene: 9:18 p.m. Wednesday night, Montgomery BART station. A slab of raw meat lays limp, cold and flattened, in the center of a BART seat next to a window on the outgoing Pittsburg Bay Point line.
How did it get here? How much did this prank cost? Is this a prank? A social experiment? Are we being filmed? Do those BART cameras work yet?
Let's start with the evidence.
San Francisco's 4505 Meats founder Ryan Farr believes the meat is likely a quite expensive porterhouse cut. "It's about a pound and a half, probably between $30 and $40 retail," Farr tells SFGATE. "Based on coloring, it's clearly grain-fed, not grass-fed."
"So someone sat on that thing for like two hours," he added. "I would guess multiple people sat on it without knowing. I hope it's not still there."
That's a rather pricey mistake, and now this person (or dog, or tiger, or I don't know, velociraptor) doesn't get to chow down on this choice cut. It's a dinner lost. A supper suspended. Someone's meat is missing.
