city tells father to remove cardboard fort he built for kids in front yard

Ogden City cites children's box fort as junk violation
SUNDAY , APRIL 05, 2015 - 5:25 PM

OGDEN — Jeremy Trentelman wasn’t thinking about violating any municipal codes when he helped his 3-year-old build a major box fort in their front yard last weekend, but apparently someone else did.

When Trentelman got home from work Wednesday he had a notification on his door that he was in violation of Ogden City’s code 12-4-2: Waste Materials or Junk; prohibited on premises. The prohibition covers junk or salvage material, litter and/or any abandoned or inoperable vehicle. In the notification Trentelman was told he had 15 days to get the boxes off his lawn or he could be charged $125 with the first violation (after the 15 days) with fees and legal actions proceeding from there.

Code enforcement officer Gordon Sant issued the notification. “I’m going to send him a letter, but I haven’t been able to get myself calmed down enough about it to do it,” Trentelman said.

He did post pictures on social media talking about the citation and has gotten quite a bit of positive feedback. “I just thought it was an awesome way to use boxes and my kids’ imagination,” Trentelman said.

Minneapolis Cop To Black Teen: 'F**k With Me, I'll Break Your Leg'

Source: huffington

Hamza Jeylani says he was racially profiled by a Minneapolis police officer.
A Minneapolis cop was caught on camera threatening to break the leg of a teenager who said he was racially profiled.

Hamza Jeylani, 17, said he and his three friends had just gotten finished playing basketball at the YMCA on March 18 when they were pulled over by police. Jeylani told MPR News the four made a U-turn when they saw police because they were hoping to avoid confrontation. The attempt failed.

"Plain and simple, if you fuck with me, I'm going to break your leg before you get the chance to run," officer Rod Webber can be heard saying in the video. "I'm being honest, I don't screw around."

“I never said I was going to run,” Jeylani says in response.

"I'm just giving you a heads up. Just trying to be officer friendly right now,” Webber replies.

A passenger in the car, 17-year-old Faysal Mohamed, said officers pulled them out of the car because they had suspected it was stolen. The minors were put in handcuffs and waited close to an hour as police searched the car and did background checks on the boys, Mohamed told My Fox Twin Cities.

“Can you tell me why I'm being arrested?” Jeylani asks.

“Because I feel like arresting you,” Webber responds.

Why skeptics think a South Carolina sailor lied about being lost at sea for 66 days

Why skeptics think a South Carolina sailor lied about being lost at sea for 66 days
By Peter Holley April 5 at 3:04 PM

It’s rare that a man is lost at sea and returns home looking even healthier than before he disappeared.

But that’s exactly what skeptics of Louis Jordan have pointed out as they question the 37-year-old’s miraculous account of surviving 66 days adrift in the Atlantic Ocean.

‘God knows I am a truthful man,” Jordan told the Daily Mail in response to his doubters. “My family knows I am telling the truth. The people who know me know that.”

[Shipwrecked sailor says he survived 66 days at sea with a lot of prayers]

!--!-!!!!!

By the time cameras caught up with him, Jordan, who claims his shoulder was broken when his boat overturned, wore a backpack, declined medical help and showed “no obvious signs of injury,” according to the Daily Mail.

---!!!

“I would have expected him to be severely dehydrated,” Kulik said. “After that amount of time at sea, he would have been wobbly on his feet, and yet he seemed to walk perfectly. He says he broke his right shoulder, and yet he didn’t even seem to be guarding that shoulder in the pictures I saw after the rescue. There is a lot that doesn’t add up.”

Greta Van Sustern called Chris Wallace out over his body shaming comments about Kelly Clarkson

http://www.eonline.com/news/643092/kelly-clarkson-gets-apology-from-fox-news-chris-wallace-and-tubby-mike-gallagher-over-body-shaming
Fox News Sunday's Chris Wallace has apologized to Kelly Clarkson after body shaming her, following a public backlash, while radio host Mike Gallagher has also expressed remorse.

Wallace, 67, and Gallagher, 54, had mocked the 32-year-old pop star, first American Idol winner and mother of a 9-month-old baby over her weight on The Mike Gallagher Show on Friday. Wallace said Clarkson "could stay off the deep dish pizza for a little while."

"I sincerely apologize to Kelly Clarkson for my offensive comment," the Fox News Sunday host said in a statement to E! News on Sunday. "I admire her remarkable talent and that should have been the focus of any discussion about her."

During the radio chat, Gallagher said, regarding Clarkson, "Holy cow, did she blow up." He also poked fun at his own weight.

"Tubby Mike is the last person in the world who should bring up anyone's weight," Gallagher, who is occasionally featured as a contributor on Fox News, said in a statement posted on his website. "I couldn't possibly feel any worse than I do for making an observation that led to the conclusion that I 'fat-shamed' this talented and classy entertainer. It was a really stupid thing for me to do."
While both Gallagher and Wallace complimented Clarkson about her singing talent during their radio chat, Greta Van Sustern, another Fox News host, had penned a post on her website in which she condemned them over their "obnoxious" "guy snickering" and called on her Fox News colleague to apologize. Many people echoed her comments online.

Russian middle class watches relative prosperity fade away

Falling oil prices and Western sanctions have cut deeply into Russia's national budget
Andrei Miller's sallow skin and gaunt visage betray a serious affliction as he sits outside an X-ray unit of Tver Regional Hospital, the tattooed fingers of his slender hands gripping a flimsy onion-skin appointment slip like a lifeline.

The 42-year-old welder has been off work since just after New Year's Day, suffering from a lung disorder that impairs his breathing, clouds his eyesight and leaves him too weak to do more than limp from chair to chair.

In the time that he has been on disability leave, the buying power of his 20,000-ruble salary has continued to slip; it's now worth about $330 a month, half what it was a year ago. His wife is on maternity leave from a day-care job that will earn them an additional $100 a month when she returns to work this spring, but the needs of their four children haven't yet adjusted to Russia's sudden economic downturn.

"The girls are teenagers," he says of the two older children, a sense of panic rising as he contemplates his family's shaky financial status. "They need everything — coats, boots, money to go out with their friends. And now we are lucky if we can buy enough food."

judge questioning attorneys 625,000 fee from 1.5M judgement on highway patrol beating

It showed a California Highway Patrol officer repeatedly punching a black woman, Marlene Pinnock, seemingly with no provocation.

As outrage grew, Pinnock's outspoken attorney Caree Harper was at the center of the story. She decried the officer's actions, demanded justice for her client and rallied community groups to Pinnock's defense. Harper ended up securing a settlement in which the officer resigned and the CHP gave her client $1.5 million.

But that victory last year has given way to vitriol and bitterness.

A federal judge overseeing the case has questioned whether Harper's $625,000 fee was excessive given the amount of legal work she did. The judge also raised questions about whether Pinnock, given her mental health history, was competent to agree to her deal with Harper without a conservator present.

Judge Otis D. Wright III grilled Harper about the issue in early March and, when he concluded that she wasn't answering his questions, held her in contempt and sent her to jail for two days. Harper has defended her actions, saying that she has done nothing wrong and that the judge's questions were unfair.

The dispute has divided the once-unified civil rights activists who had stood behind the attorney.

"There are serious questions about how much of the more than $1 million in the agreed on settlement in the case has been used," Earl Ofari Hutchinson, president of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable, said in a statement.
