Gunn wrote one of the best science fiction novels ever, IMO: "The Listeners"

One of the first novels to deal with SETI, the search for extraterrestial intelligence.
Well worth a look if you haven't read it.

From the other group: "Now the Gun Nuttery begins . . ."

Reposted so that *all* DUers may discuss, if they so desire.

After four years of relative quiet the gun nuts are, well, going nuts. I have a google search set up for 'gun control' (and other variations). For the last four years it usually turns up a mixed bag of gun nuttery and news about actual gun safety legislation and not much of either. Since the Biden/Harris win things sure changed.

Today's search turned up a letter to the editor in The Union Leader decrying the restriction of carrying guns on school property. The writer refers to such restrictions as 'a perversion' that only effects 'law abiding citizens' who NEVER shoot up schools. Too bad that's not true as 80% of mass shootings, including Sandy Hook are committed by non-felons who got their guns legally. But then you never know when one of those savage Kindergarten students will lay down killing fire on any 'law abiding citizens' in the area.
https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/12/mass-shootings-mother-jones-full-data/

Next in the search was an opinion piece in the Washington Examiner that calls out Kamala Harris for her support of a buyback plan. 'Kamala Harris' common sense gun control is total confiscation!' As always there are the references to 'second amendment guarantees' (there are none) and labeling the new administration as the 'most anti second amendment' in history.

Following that was a piece from The Federalist calling Biden 'the most overtly anti-gun president in American history', who would immediately issue executive orders: Banning pistol braces, Banning homemade firearms/80 percent receivers and Banning online firearm and ammunition sales. After that with the help of congress he would pass measures Banning “assault weapons”, Banning “high capacity” magazines and Requiring universal background checks. Funny, I don't recall any of that in any speech, campaign add or anywhere else. I do recall a whole lot about this virus that's killing 3000 Americans a day. Now I'm not saying that none of this will arise during a Biden administration, but 'first thing'?

Then there was this oopsie being fixed in USA Today when a MAGAT tweeter was corrected by David Hogg
https://twitter.com/davidhogg111/status/1338162918014279682 I did say the search turned up a mixed bag, right?

After David cast enough shade on the MAGAT to look like a solar eclipse came another Opinion in from the Eastern New Mexico News by a self styled 'champion of liberty' who claimed to be in the parking lot of the El Paso Walmart during the tragic mass murder there. The author laments the use of signs asking people not to bring guns onto their property claiming that criminals won't obey these signs so they only restrict the rights of law abiding citizens. Well, it seems the shooter bought his gun through a legal importer in FL, had it delivered to a legal gun store in Allan TX where he presumably passed a background check and was therefore NOT A CRIMINAL but a law abiding citizen. Hmmm, didn't the Federalist just rail against any online restrictions for gun purchases and universal background checks because they restrict the rights of law abiding citizens? Why would anyone want that? And what about the 80/20 statistic researched by Mother Jones?

The Augusta Chronicle printed a reader comment lamenting the gun grabbing Dem candidates running for Senate there saying that Chicago and Illinois have the most strictest gun control laws and are a war zone. Only two problems with that: neighboring states have some of the least restrictive laws and compared to Louisiana and Alaska that have the least restrictive laws in the nation make Illinois look downright peaceful.

The last three pieces in today's search were from AmmoLand. Need I say more? I mean, bless their little pea pickin' hearts, they regurgitate the same old head-up-the-ass gun talking points. They defend John Lott as a superior statistician and scholar with the courage to tell the TRUTH about More Guns, Less Crime, lament that some states have local control of guns in public and shed tears over restricting guns at protests in some localities (I mean, what could go wrong? Remember Kyle Rittenhouse?)

Anyway, that's ONE DAY's worth of 'gun control' headlines from Google. It's going to be a long 4 years (8? 12?) putting up with this unmitigated bull shit. It's gonna be a fact free, reason free and fantasy filled time.

My question: Why does the subject of gun control seem to bring out those who like the theory of 'precrime'?

'Cause a mass shooting definitely qualifies as a felony in most places that I'm aware of...

Black And Up In Arms

https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2020/12/09/944615029/black-and-up-in-arms

..."This is basically one of the many facilities where they train police," says Kourtney Redmond, 39, as he pulls into the outdoor range the day after Juneteenth, in his black pickup truck.

Redmond has arrived to meet about a dozen members of the 761st Gun Club, of which he is president. He and his peers stand out, not just among the group of white men shooting farther up the range, but in the common conception of who owns and shoots guns legally. Redmond and his group sport twists, dreadlocks, silk presses, and crew cuts. Some wear shirts with the club's slogan: "Come Out Fighting."

Over the next four hours, Redmond and his group practice how to shoot at moving targets, fire shots while lying on the ground and fix jammed magazines. "That's what the 761st [Gun Club] is about — making sure that people get classes, making sure that people have firearm knowledge and knowledge of the law," Redmond said. "A very big part of gun ownership is being within the corners of the law."

The gun club is a chapter of the National African American Gun Association, or NAAGA, which was created in 2015. NAAGA's membership steadily grew during the candidacy and presidency of Donald Trump, but this year was different. The pandemic, police brutality and civil unrest sent scores of people to the organization. Membership has grown by more than 25% this year, and NAAGA now boasts more than 40,000 members...

Good on them. I hope news of the ever-growing NAAGA membership gives Michael Bloomberg and his flock of racist
supporters heartburn.

Supreme Court says Muslims placed on no-fly list can sue FBI agents for damages

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/12/10/supreme-court-says-muslims-placed-on-no-fly-list-can-sue-fbi-agents.html

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday in favor of three Muslim men who say they were placed or kept on the government’s no-fly list in retaliation for refusing to serve as terrorism informants for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The court wrote in a unanimous opinion authored by Justice Clarence Thomas that Muhammad Tanvir, Jameel Algibhah and Naveed Shinwari may sue individual FBI agents for money damages under a federal law protecting religious exercise...

...“Rather than accepting that refusal, the FBI agents persisted — in some instances threatening individual Respondents with deportation and arrest and in other instances offering financial incentives and assistance with family members’ immigration to the United States,” Kassem wrote.

“In each case, the agents relied upon what they assumed would be the irresistible coercion of the No Fly List,” he added.

The case is: Tanzin, et al. v. Tanvir, et al No. 19–71

Police guide that calls BLM a terrorist group draws outrage

https://apnews.com/article/police-guide-calls-blm-terrorist-group-8dc0afce2ce6b60dbaa0d1d9c53ce1e3

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A prominent law enforcement training group is promoting a lengthy research document riddled with falsehoods and conspiracies that urges local police to treat Black Lives Matter activists as terrorists plotting a violent revolution.

The document distributed by the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association contains misinformation and inflammatory rhetoric that could incite officers against protesters and people of color, critics said. It alleges Black Lives Matter and antifa, an umbrella term for leftist militants, are “revolutionary movements whose aims are to overthrow the U.S. government” and claims they are planning “extreme violence.”...

...The association in October sent a link to the 176-page paper, “Understanding Antifa and Urban Guerrilla Warfare,” in an email news update to its thousands of members. The document, labeled “restricted to law enforcement only,” is one of the few publicly available materials on its website. The Associated Press learned of the document from one of the policing organization’s members.

The group’s executive director, Harvey Hedden, defended the document, which he called one member’s opinion and open for critique and debate. He said the association supports the exchange of ideas and strategies to improve criminal justice training but does not endorse specific approaches...

From gun violence activist to arming the LGBTQ community

https://www.qsaltlake.com/news/2020/10/23/from-gun-violence-activist-to-arming-the-lgbtq-community/

Ermiya Fanaeian was still in high school when she organized one of the largest rallies to happen in the state of Utah to protest gun violence. She was the face on local television news stations speaking about the need to control gun violence. Today she is running a group that seeks to train and arm people in the LGBTQ community.

“My position shifted because of the continuous violence that I saw happening to trans women across the nation,” Fanaeian told QSaltLake Magazine. “Nothing was being done about violent attack after violent attack that was happening against working-class trans women.”

She said that she gave up on politicians solving the problem of murders most often perpetrated by those with guns.

“We kept protesting for years, and all politicians would do is end up letting the attackers off the hook with a slap on the wrist,” she said. “And often these were the same liberal politicians who were calling to disarm people...”

Apple's global security boss accused of bribing cops in exchange for concealed gun permits

Once again, 'may issue' laws are shown to be nothing more than an excuse for graft, as well as
a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Apple's global security boss accused of bribing cops with 200 free iPads in exchange for concealed gun permits

Exec, two officers, one other charged

Chris Williams, Editor in Chief Mon 23 Nov 2020 // 21:17 UTC

..Thomas Moyer, 50, was last week charged with bribing senior officers in Santa Clara county, home to Apple's Cupertino headquarters.

According to prosecutors, between February and August last year, Undersheriff Rick Sung and Captain James Jensen refused to issue four concealed-carry weapon (CCW) licenses to Apple employees unless the pair got something in return. Moyer, it is claimed, promised to donate 200 iPads, worth about $70,000 at retail, to the sheriff's office in exchange for the permits, it is alleged.

The deal was scrapped by Moyer and Sung after the county district attorney stuck a probe into the sheriff's operations, and got a search warrant to obtain the office's CCW records in August last year, it is said. Sung, 48, and Jensen, 43, have been charged with receiving or asking for bribes...

...Insurance broker Harpreet Chadha, 49, was also charged with bribery. It is said he promised Sung, in exchange for a CCW license, $6,000 of box suite tickets for a San Jose Sharks ice-hockey game at Silicon Valley's SAP Center on Valentine’s Day last year. The suite was used by Sheriff Laurie Smith’s relatives and some of her biggest political supporters to celebrate her re-election as sheriff, prosecutors said. Smith has not been charged with any crimes...

Imo, those that support may-issue are either a) hopelessly naive or b) in on the graft

Shall-issue is the only way to go.
