Daily Holidays - December 1

Eat a Red Apple Day When one thinks of an apple it isn’t the vibrant green color of the McIntosh apple that jumps to mind, nor is it the mottled red and yellow stripes of the Fuji Apple, no indeed. The apple that comes to mind, is the Red Delicious apple. The Red Delicious is so engrained in our minds as what an apple look likes, that if you ask a child to draw an apple, without question it’s going to be the red crayon they reach for. That’s why Eat A Red Apple Day exists, to celebrate this iconic member of the apple family, and its history. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/eat-a-red-apple-day/

World Aids Day There is a disease that reached out into the world and changed the way we thought about everything, from how we got our blood transfusions to our sexual practices. It was met with a campaign of fear and superstition that harmed both those who had it, and the families and friends of those who surrounded them. While HIV and AIDS are out in the world today, the horror stories that were told of how it works and how it was transmitted have largely been mitigated. World AIDS Day works to ensure that those who suffer from AIDS can live in a safer, more understanding world and help further research to eliminate it. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-aids-day/

Computer Security Day These days, electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers make up an important component of our everyday lives. While communication has become easier and more efficient than ever before, these technological advancements have brought with them new concerns about privacy and security. There’s even a holiday dedicated to keeping your online data safe and secure – it’s fittingly called Computer Security Day. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/computer-security-day/

Stay Home Because You're Well Day Isn’t it a shame to waste your day off feeling sick? When you finally get some time away from the monotony of the office, isn’t it better to actually enjoy it? Of course it is! And that’s the thinking behind ‘Stay Home Because You’re Well Day’. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/stay-home-because-youre-well-day/

Daily Holidays November 29

Giving Tuesday Giving Tuesday takes place on the Tuesday directly after American Thanksgiving, which in turn takes place on the 4th Thursday of November. Giving Tuesday was created to help the “giving season” get started, reminding people that there is more to holidays than consumerism and commercialization. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/giving-tuesday/

Electronic Greetings Day ou remember all of those sometimes cute, sometimes funny, and sometimes downright obnoxious electronic greeting cards that used to appear in your email inbox? Well, if you hadn’t guessed it, there’s actually a day devoted to electronic greetings. Fittingly, that day is known as Electronic Greetings Day. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/electronic-greetings-day/

Square Dancing Day exists to celebrate the square dance form of folk dancing, and is a great excuse to get out and “Dosey Do”. This fun, healthy and simple form of dance with a long history definitely deserves a holiday all of its own, and it has one! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/square-dancing-day/

National French Toast Day There’s a blend that just makes our morning fantastic, and it’s a blending of eggs, milk, and cinnamon with bread dipped in. There’s something about the savory sweet smell of it, and the anticipation of having it painted with butter and drizzled with syrup, with a side of breakfast sausage and a tall glass of orange juice that’ll get us out of bed on even the worst of days. French Toast Day is honors this amazing breakfast delight, and encourages you to enjoy it for breakfast with a few friends. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/french-toast-day/

Cyber Monday I have an email box full of offers from I believe everyone I have ever done online business with at this point. Happy Clicking (either to delete or to take advantage of a good deal)

Pins and Needles Day might not have its origins in what you think! Though when we say ‘pins and needles’ today, you’ll think of that tingly feeling you get when your leg goes to sleep, the original Pins and Needles Day started up in 1937 to commemorate the opening of the pro-Labor musical play of the same name on Broadway. The production would eventually have a massive 1108 performance run, but its namesake day has grown to mean something else entirely. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/pins-and-needles-day/

International Aura Awareness Day For centuries it has been known that each person gives off an aura of his or her own. This aura is a field of subtle, luminous radiation surrounding a person that changes in colour, size and shape relation to our mood. Auras can be compared the halos above the head of saints in various religions. It is thought that the greater the aura, the greater, stronger or more powerful the human being; however, everyone is though to have one, regardless of age or gender. A certain aura can also be the first indication that we are suffering from certain illnesses. Although some people find it easier to see auras than others, with special training and discipline, most people are eventually able to tune into their own aura and the auras of other people. Many people speak of happy pregnant women or people who have just fallen deeply in love”glowing”, or an especially talented and passionate stage performer being simply “radiant”–all of these situations are when we are able to somewhat see the aura the person we speak of is emitting, though we perhaps do not know the right way to explain what we see. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-aura-awareness-day/

National Cake Day The best way to celebrate Cake Day is by eating cake with family and friends. You can buy a number of different types of cakes to celebrate the event, or have fun making your own cakes mark the occasion. There are many different kinds of cake to choose from. Yeast cakes are one of the oldest types and are pretty similar to bread in texture, due to the yeast content. There are many different types of cheesecake, from the rich and creamy New York style cheesecakes baked in a graham cracker crust and drowned in cherry syrup, to the healthier varieties made from cottage cheese and filled with orange and lemon peel and raisins that are lower in calories and fat and higher in protein. Sponge cakes rely on the air trapped inside them during baking for their light texture, and are famously paired with rich butter or cream cheese-based icings for balance; however, these icings tend to be a bit complicated to make and are easily ruined, so if you are a novice baker, perhaps go for something a bit simpler. So pick a type of cake that suits you and you family’s or friends’ needs the best and start baking! The experience will be both fun and educational. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cake-day/

Small Business Saturday. Small businesses often are overlooked by customers who are enticed by larger companies, and this can adversely affect the local economy in more negative ways than might appear on the surface level. The rise of shopping malls and large chain stores such as Walmart and other retailers has caused irreversible damage to Main Street in the last half-century or so, and it’s paramount to remember the importance of supporting local small businesses. After all, why should we not celebrate the spirit of enterprise and entrepreneurship, as exemplified by small business owners who take the risk of following their dreams? After all, it’s a common thing for politicians to talk about supporting Main Street over big business, and how small business owners often face greater hardships than larger companies. Since Small Business Saturday is held on the Saturday following Thanksgiving Day, it falls right during the peak shopping periods of the year. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/small-business-saturday/

National Parfait Day In French, the word parfait means “perfect”, and in American English, the term almost exclusively refers to a sort of delicious, frozen dessert. If your idea of perfection involves ice cream, then you’ll have little trouble understanding the connection with the name. And why not have a day devoted to creamy, delicious indulgence? Shouldn’t there be at least one day of the year where you can indulge in something so rich and celebrate rather than feeling guilty about it? https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/parfait-day/

Flossing Day has been celebrated since the year 2000, to remind people of the importance of looking after their teeth. Flossing is an important component of this, and dental floss has been available since the late 1890s. Ironically enough, when Johnson and Johnson developed the first patented dental floss in 1898, toothbrushes were still quite expensive. Originally, floss was made from thin silk threads, but by the end of WWII nylon had become prevalent. While it did take 102 years to come up with such a day as Flossing Day, you shouldn’t really overlook your oral hygiene for that long. If you did, you’d lose all of your teeth long before that. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/flossing-day/

Buy Nothing Day was founded in Vancouver, Canada by artist Ted Dave in September of 1992. It is celebrated on the Friday after American Thanksgiving (the day also infamously known as ‘Black Friday’). And anyone who has ever seen what happens in North America during the Black Friday sales understands all too well why it was high time that we take a step back and look at ourselves, our behavior, and contemplate the meaning of all of the Black Friday madness. Soon after Buy Nothing Day was created, campaigns to have a similar day of reflection started appearing in the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, Austria, Germany, New Zealand, Japan, the Netherlands, France, and Norway. More than 65 nations currently participate in it. Adbusters, a company responsible for the inital promotion of Ted Dave’s idea for Buy Nothing Day, states that the day “isn’t just about changing your habits for one day” but “about starting a lasting lifestyle commitment to consuming less and producing less waste.” https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/buy-nothing-day/

Shopping Reminder Day Shopping Reminder Day falls roughly a month before Christmas, and as such it’s the perfect reminder to go ahead and get started on all of your holiday shopping. Yup, that’s right, there’s a day to tell you to shop so that you don’t go and procrastinate on all of your holiday shopping right up until Christmas Eve (like my dad always did, but I don’t think he’s alone at all on this front). But in all of the commotion of promotions, sales, and Christmas shopping, maybe you forgot something important. You’ve been running around like mad – is there anything in your refrigerator? Or maybe you need to buy some things for the house? See, maybe it is a good thing that there’s such a thing as Shopping Reminder Day even at this time of year. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/shopping-reminder-day/

Fibonacci Day There are sequences that appear in nature time and time again, ones that seem to define the very basis of our reality and coordinate how everything comes together. One of these numbers is the Fibonacci sequence, and it can be found in the most surprising of places. Fibonacci Day commemorates this sequence and the man who brought it to our attention in 1202. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/fibonacci-day/

Daily Holidays November 8

I will be away from the key board the next few days and will continue to post the Daily Holidays as best I can, however they will be a bit more bare bones than they currently appear.

Not that I expect anyone who visits this Board to do so, but don't forget to VOTE. Your choice in Voting Booth is Yours and Yours alone, however failing to show up and exercise Your Right and Duty to Vote makes things just a bit less for all of us. Democracy belongs to those who show up.

Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day s an event that leaves little to the imagination. In other words, cooking something original, spicy and even a bit offencive is the entire intent of this day. Still, it is not meant to merely represent a disgusting concoction of disparate ingredients. Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day is intended to celebrate the use of herbs such as garlic and hot pepper to promote health and longevity. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cook-something-bold-and-pungent-day/

X-ray Day In 1895 there was an incredible discovery made, one that would utterly change the way we looked at the human body, both literally and figuratively. On the back of this discovery, a million new technologies would be developed in the areas of medicine, security, and much more. The man who discovered all this? Wilhelm Röntgen, and as a result, he may just be one of the most important men in medical history. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/x-ray-day/
