National Cherries Jubilee Day There are many special days that celebrate different types of food but it is quite rare to find a day that is devoted to just one particular dish. Cherries Jubilee Day is set aside to celebrate a dessert that takes cherries and turns them into something spectacular. Fresh cherries are cooked in a sweet sauce into which warmed liqueur, usually kirsch or fruit brandy, is mixed and set alight before being spooned over a chilled bowl of vanilla ice-cream while still burning with a blue flame. This show-stopping flambéed dish is credited to the famous chef, Auguste Escoffie, who created it for the 1897 Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Queen Victoria. Cherries Jubilee became a big hit across the Atlantic and was a favourite in American restaurants of the 1950s and 60s. Today it has come back into fashion and Cherries Jubilee Day is the ideal time to discover this dramatic and delicious dish. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/cherries-jubilee-day/

Save Your Photos Day Photographs, whether digital or physical, are an important part of our history and collection of memories. Whether they were passed down from our grandparents and parents or were created out of a personal passion for photography, these valuable artifacts represent days and moments in our lives and those of loved ones that can’t be reclaimed if lost. Every year thousands of photos are lost to natural disasters, fires, and other mishaps, Save Your Photos Day reminds you to safeguard these treasures. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/save-your-photos-day/

Punctuation Day Let’s face it, punctuation saves lives. It may sound a little strange to say that, but when you think of the effect that just the humble comma can have on the meaning of a sentence, it becomes readily apparent that there are some really strong arguments for learning to use them properly. For instance, you really don’t want to say “Let’s eat Grandma!” when you mean “Let’s eat, Grandma!” The first means you’re suggesting you eat your sweet old granny, the second invites her to come dine with you, see the difference? Punctuation Day shares this wisdom with the world, as well as the wisdom of all the other forms of punctuation. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/punctuation-day/

International Rabbit Day Poachers and cosmetic manufacturers beware: International Rabbit Day is definitely not for you! Held on the fourth Saturday or Sunday of September, this annual celebration of the long-eared, short-tailed mammal is not just in the name of the millions of bunnies kept as pets across the Western world, but aims to promote a serious message about animal welfare. On International Rabbit Day we are encouraged to consider, not only the companionship offered by our favourite hutch-dwellers, but the various ways in which rabbits are harmed by medical and cosmetic testing, hunting, fur farming and, of course, casseroling. Yes, there is a serious side to International Rabbit Day but you may not be surprised to learn that events are somewhat sporadic – so let your bunny out of its hutch and give it an extra carrot or two (and be sure to plan chicken for the family roast). https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-rabbit-day/

Supporters are raising funds to repair Florissant's historic Old St. Ferdinand Shrine

Supporters of the Old St. Ferdinand Shrine in Florissant are trying to raise $400,000 to repair the nearly 200-year-old complex, which includes some of the oldest Roman Catholic buildings in the Louisiana Purchase Territory.

Age and weather have taken a heavy toll on the shrine's church, convent, rectory and school building, according to Geri Debo, secretary/treasurer of the Friends of Old St. Ferdinand Shrine. The nonprofit formed in 1959 to care for the historic brick structures after the Archdiocese of St. Louis replaced them with new parish buildings.

New windows and tuck-pointing top the list of critical repairs needed to stop moisture that is damaging the walls of the buildings.

The group raises funds for daily operations through membership dues, tours and renting the facilities for special events, including weddings and funerals. But because the cost of repairs far exceeds the shrine’s budget, the group has started a gofundme campaign to spread the word.

Hug a Vegetarian Day Hug A Vegetarian Day was established to show recognition and appreciation for those that have made the, often difficult, transition to a meat free and animal-product free lifestyle. Being a vegetarian isn’t always easy, your food options tend to be limited at restaurants, and there’s a strange social hostility against those who choose to not consume animals. Since vegetarianism first started becoming a popular dietary move, there have been a lot of vegetarian options entering the market and today it’s relatively easy to find an alternative to anything left behind in the transition. So give these brave souls a hug to thank them for the animal lives they save, and the difficulties they sometimes face in their race to save our animal friends. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/hug-a-vegetarian-day/

Checkers Day or Dogs in Politics Day doesn’t have anything to do with the popular board game; rather, it commemorates the famous ‘checkers‘ speech made by Richard M. Nixon in 1952 after he received an adorable Cocker Spaniel as he sought election in 1952. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/checkers-day/

Restless Legs Awareness Day. Restless Legs Awareness Day aims to promote awareness of this medical condition or syndrome. It is held on the same day each year to coincide with the birth date of Professor Karl-Axel Ekborn (born 23rd September 1907, died 1977). This eminent Swedish neurologist first wrote and described the disease in 1945. Since then, a lot has been learned about its symptoms although (to date) there is no known primary cause. It may be associated with dopamine or blood iron levels. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/restless-legs-awareness-day/

National Ice Cream Cone Day Ice Cream Cone Day seeks to draw attention to the invention of the ice cream cone; an important, yet sadly often overlooked, invention that allows people to enjoy delicious ice cream combined with a handily portable and edible wafer cone, often whilst out and about. Just imagine what the world would look like without an ice cream cone. No ’99s, ice cream would have to be eaten with a bowl, and ice lollies would dominate! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ice-cream-cone-day/

American Business Women's Day This special day celebrates the contribution that women make in the business world and focuses on ways to give women more equality. The first ever Business Women’s Day was celebrated in 1983 when a joint Congressional resolution was passed. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/business-womens-day/

Car Free Day Ever since the first vehicle rolled onto the streets in 1886, the world has had a love-hate relationship with the motor car. Today, with over one billion motor vehicles on the roads around the globe, it sometimes seems as if we cannot escape the pollution, noise and danger that they produce. One day a year is set aside to try and avoiding using cars and cycling, walking or using public transport instead. Car Free Day aims to take the heat off the planet for just one day by encouraging people to be less dependent on their cars and try alternatives. Informal car free days took place throughout the 1990s and the first official, global Car Free Day was launched in 2000. Many big cities, like Bogota and Jakarta, close their central roads on this day and fill them with walking and cycling events, and smaller car-free events take place around the world. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-car-free-day/

Florissant letter carrier to get hero award for stopping attacker wielding a cinder block

WASHINGTON • Florissant mail carrier Michael Murphy, who in 2014 rescued women in two cars from a man wielding a cinder block, will be among eight honored Wednesday for saving lives or helping people on their routes.

Murphy, of Troy, Ill., will be named the Central Region Hero of the Year by the National Association of Letter Carriers at a luncheon here.

The NALC said, “Murphy, a Marine Corps veteran and Navy reservist, tackled a cinder block-wielding man attacking women in two cars.”

According to the citation, Murphy was first alerted to a young girl screaming, "somebody help my mommy," when he walked out of a bread store after delivering mail on Oct. 29, 2014.

World Gratitude Day Gratitude Day is celebrated annually on the 21st September. Miniature Golf Day Get yourself down to the (tiny) putting green for Miniature Golf Day! A great day out for the family, and an excuse to sharpen up your putting skills all in one fun package. Watch out for the windmill turbines! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/miniature-golf-day/

International Day of Peace Peace means so much more than an absence of war. More ordinary conflicts arise from disputes with family, colleagues and neighbours and these disturb our sense of peace. Making peace with one person today, even if it is just with yourself, is a fitting way to mark the day. Light a candle, reflect, forgive and enjoy being tranquil. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-day-of-peace/

Red Panda Day With the decline in their habitat, International Red Panda Day hopes to encourage people to learn about these adorable creatures and help save the biome in which they live. These animals spend most of their lives in trees and even sleep aloft. When foraging, they mostly nocturnal but also forage in the gloaming hours of dusk and dawn. Red pandas roam the Eastern Himalayas. These rust-colored creatures are experiencing a loss of nesting trees and bamboo, leading to a decline in the population. With less than 10,000 in the wild efforts are doubled every year to help these little fireboxes! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/international-red-panda-day/

National money and local action may be crucial in Missouri's hot U.S. Senate contest

Democrat Jason Kander’s new TV ad, which shows him assembling an assault weapon blindfolded, already has been hailed by the Washington Post as the best campaign ad so far this year.

That’s just the latest evidence of the national attention – and money – that’s been pouring into Missouri for months to aid or attack Kander or the man he hopes to defeat in November, U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo.

National Punch Day The word punch means five, originating from the Hindustani word panch. Punch Day sadly isn’t an excuse to drink five glasses of punch; rather, it celebrates the traditional punch base recipe of five key ingredients, which most punches still use – alcohol (usually spirits), lemon (or other fruits), sugar, water, and tea (or other spices, e.g. cinnamon). https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/punch-day/

Get Ready Day Being prepared to deal with an emergency is important for anyone and this is what Get Ready Day is all about. It is staged each year as a way of encouraging individuals, families, and communities to consider what is required in the event of natural disasters, pandemic illnesses, infectious diseases, and other crisis events. The day was first established in the mid 2000’s by the Public Health Association and the Get Ready website has a wealth of information to help those that are interested. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/get-ready-day/
